    Quality of life and well-being of dermatology patients: Influence of associated anxiety and depression in relation to satisfaction of care

Aims: It was intended to study the influence of anxiety and depression on well-being and quality of life (QOL) in relation to satisfaction of dermatological care in an out-patient setting. Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study, dermatological patients were assessed for well-being (WHO-5 Well-Being scale), overall QOL, anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder, GAD-7), and depression (Patient health questionnaire, PHQ-9). Satisfaction of care in the dermatology clinic (1: not at all satisfied to 10: very satisfied) and the likelihood of recommending it (1: not at all likely to 10: very likely) were assessed on a 1 to 10 scale. Demographic and clinical variables were also collected. Results: The sample (n = 150) covered a range of dermatological diagnoses including allergy/eczema (53.3%), inflammatory/infective diseases (19.3%), sexually transmitted diseases (10.0%), psycho-somatic diseases (9.3%), and auto-immune diseases (7.3%). A clinically relevant level (moderate degree or above) of depression (12.7%) and anxiety (8.0%) was present in considerable proportions of patients, suggesting that overall 18.7% of patients had anxiety, depression, or both. The satisfaction and recommendation scores were at an appreciable level; however, they did not influence the anxiety and depression scores. Anxiety and depression were negatively correlated with well-being and overall QOL. Conclusion: Anxiety and depression present in a considerable proportion of dermatological patients significantly impaired their well-being and QOL despite high satisfaction and likelihood of recommendation of care in the dermatology clinic. Identifying and supporting psychiatric problems of dermatological patients are needed

    Assessment of oral health among seafarers in Mundra Port, Kutch, Gujarat: a cross-sectional study

    Background: Seafarer is a person who navigates waterborne vessels or assists as a crewmember in their operation and maintenance in all tough weather, but little research has been done to identify conditions that may lead to assess seafarer general health as well as oral health. Aim: To assess oral diseases including dental caries and periodontal conditions among seafarer’s population arrived in Mundra Port, Kutch, Gujarat, India. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess oral health condition of seafarer community of Mundra Taluka of Kutch District, Gujarat, India, from July 2014 to September 2014. Results: Total of 385 subjects participated in the survey. Adverse habits show the overall 72.3% prevalence among the study population. Occurrence rate of caries, periodontal disease and prosthetic status were 88%, 75.1% and 6.5%, respectively. The best predictors for Decayed Missing Filled Teeth (DMFT), Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and prosthetic status were oral hygiene practices, adverse habit and educational status. Conclusions: Findings of the present study suggest that oral health condition of seafarer community was relatively poor, with high caries prevalence and poor periodontal health. This epidemiological survey has provided baseline information to underpin the implementation of oral health programmes

    Decrypting the multi-functional biological activators and inducers of defense responses against biotic stresses in plants

    Plant diseases are still the main problem for the reduction in crop yield and a threat to global food security. Additionally, excessive usage of chemical inputs such as pesticides and fungicides to control plant diseases have created another serious problem for human and environmental health. In view of this, the application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for controlling plant disease incidences has been identified as an eco-friendly approach for coping with the food security issue. In this review, we have identified different ways by which PGPRs are capable of reducing phytopathogenic infestations and enhancing crop yield. PGPR suppresses plant diseases, both directly and indirectly, mediated by microbial metabolites and signaling components. Microbial synthesized anti-pathogenic metabolites such as siderophores, antibiotics, lytic enzymes, hydrogen cyanide, and several others act directly on phytopathogens. The indirect mechanisms of reducing plant disease infestation are caused by the stimulation of plant immune responses known as initiation of systemic resistance (ISR) which is mediated by triggering plant immune responses elicited through pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). The ISR triggered in the infected region of the plant leads to the development of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) throughout the plant making the plant resistant to a wide range of pathogens. A number of PGPRs including Pseudomonas and Bacillus genera have proven their ability to stimulate ISR. However, there are still some challenges in the large-scale application and acceptance of PGPR for pest and disease management. Further, we discuss the newly formulated PGPR inoculants possessing both plant growth-promoting activities and plant disease suppression ability for a holistic approach to sustaining plant health and enhancing crop productivity

    Search for heavy resonances decaying to two Higgs bosons in final states containing four b quarks

    A search is presented for narrow heavy resonances X decaying into pairs of Higgs bosons (H) in proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at root s = 8 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb(-1). The search considers HH resonances with masses between 1 and 3 TeV, having final states of two b quark pairs. Each Higgs boson is produced with large momentum, and the hadronization products of the pair of b quarks can usually be reconstructed as single large jets. The background from multijet and t (t) over bar events is significantly reduced by applying requirements related to the flavor of the jet, its mass, and its substructure. The signal would be identified as a peak on top of the dijet invariant mass spectrum of the remaining background events. No evidence is observed for such a signal. Upper limits obtained at 95 confidence level for the product of the production cross section and branching fraction sigma(gg -> X) B(X -> HH -> b (b) over barb (b) over bar) range from 10 to 1.5 fb for the mass of X from 1.15 to 2.0 TeV, significantly extending previous searches. For a warped extra dimension theory with amass scale Lambda(R) = 1 TeV, the data exclude radion scalar masses between 1.15 and 1.55 TeV

    Magnetic Stimulus Responsive Tetracycline Delivery System Based on Chitosan Microbeads with Embedded Magnetic Nanoparticles

    In recent years, pharmaceutical research has seen a surge in various smart drug delivery systems (DDS) that attempt dosage control and drug localization, thereby granting enhanced therapeutic capabilities and flexibility to healthcare providers. Some of them used a stimuli to modify the drug release profile from DDS. In this work, chitosan microbeads embedded with magnetic nanoparticles were loaded with tetracycline (tet.) antibiotic and stimulated by an alternating magnetic field for 60 min. The spectrophotometric analysis of the supernatant from these stimulated samples showed a significantly higher release of tet., as compared to the control samples, which were subjected to exact same environment without the stimulation. Interestingly, the release was higher only during the stimulation period, the resting period showed comparable amount of tet. released in the waiting span. The results indicate promising possibility of a smart controllable DDS by magnetic excitation

    Early Wildfire Detection Technologies in Practice—A Review

    As fires grow in intensity and frequency each year, so has the resistance from their anthropic victims in the form of firefighting technology and research. Although it is impossible to completely prevent wildfires, the potential devastation can be minimized if fires are detected and precisely geolocated while still in their nascent phases. Furthermore, automated approaches without human involvement are comparatively more efficient, accurate and capable of monitoring extremely remote and vast areas. With this specific intention, many research groups have proposed numerous approaches in the last several years, which can be grouped broadly into these four distinct categories: sensor nodes, unmanned aerial vehicles, camera networks and satellite surveillance. This review paper discusses notable advancements and trends in these categories, with subsequent shortcomings and challenges. We also describe a technical overview of common prototypes and several analysis models used to diagnose a fire from the raw input data. By writing this paper, we hoped to create a synopsis of the current state of technology in this emergent research area and provide a reference for further developments to other interested researchers

    Screen Dependency Disorders in children under two years of age: A Parent Report Measure

    Screen dependency disorder is a growing concern. The rising trend in use of digital devices among young children being less researched, the study was done to find out the prevalence and pattern of total and device-specific screen viewing (SV), in a well baby clinic among children less than two years of age, Data was collected through in-person interviews from mothers of the children. Increasing child age and type of family were found to be significantly associated with higher prevalence of SV. Smart phones had similar usage rates at par with TVs; reiterating the fact that mobile devices have become widely available in the entire population, being second source of SV. Parental knowledge and parental practices were also found to influence the SV and screen-time in children.
