The determinants of loan loss provisions:an analysis of the Greek banking systemin light of the sovereign debt crisis
We utilize a new set of macroeconomic and regulatory data to analyze the evolution of loan loss provisioning practices in the Greek banking system over the period 2005-2015. We explore the determinants of the aggregate loan loss reserves to total loans ratio, which reflects the accumulation of provisions net of write-offs, and constitutes an important metric of the credit quality of loan portfolios. Our results suggest that domestic credit institutions respond relatively quickly to macroeconomic shocks, though the latterâs effects on the provisioning behavior of the domestic banking system show significant persistence. Furthermore, the impact of macroeconomic shocks on the loan loss reserves ratio has become stronger (both in terms of magnitude and statistical significance) following the outbreak of the Greek sovereign debt crisis. From a macro policy perspective, this result indicates that a sustainable stabilization of macroeconomic conditions is a key precondition for safeguarding domestic financial stability. For a regulatory standpoint, it suggests that the possibility of macroeconomic regime-related effects on banksâ provisioning policies should be taken into account when macro prudential stress tests of the banking system are designed and implemented
Explaining non-performing loans in Greece: a comparative study on the effects of recession and banking practices
Using a new dataset of macroeconomic and banking-related variables we attempt to explain the evolution of âbadâ loans in Greece over the period 2005-2015. Our findings suggest that the primary cause of the sharp increase in non-performing loans (NPLs) following the outbreak of the sovereign debt crisis can be mainly attributed to the unprecedented contraction of domestic economic activity and the subsequent rise in unemployment. Furthermore, our results offer no empirical evidence in support of a range of examined hypotheses assuming overly aggressive lending practices by major Greek credit institutions or any systematic efforts to boost current earnings by extending credit to lower credit quality clients. We find that the transmission of macroeconomic shocks to NPLs takes place relatively fast, with the estimated magnitude of the respective responses being broadly comparable with that documented in some earlier studies for other euro area periphery economies. Overall, our results support a swift implementation of reforms agreed with official lenders in the context of the new (3rd) bailout programme. These envisage the modernization the countyâs private sector insolvency framework and the creation of a more efficient model for the management of NPLs. A vigorous implementation of these reforms is key for allowing a resumption of positive credit creation, by freeing up valuable resources that are currently trapped in unproductive sectors of the domestic economy. This, in turn, would facilitate a speedier return to positive economic growth and a gradual reduction in unemployment
Health and fitness trends in Southern Europe for 2023: A cross-sectional survey
The physical activity, exercise and wellness sector is rapidly growing and seems to be an exciting field for business and professional development with great potential globally. The purpose of this observational and cross-sectional study was to determine the most popular health and fitness trends in Southern Europe for the first time, including data from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Cyprus, and to investigate any potential differences in this area compared to the Pan-European and global fitness trends for 2023. A national online survey was conducted in five Southern European countries, using the methodology of similar regional and worldwide surveys conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine since 2007. In total, a web-based questionnaire was sent to 19,887 professionals who worked in the Southern European physical activity, exercise and wellness sector. A total of 2645 responses were collected from five national surveys with an overall mean response rate of 13.3%. The ten most important fitness trends in Southern Europe for 2023 were personal training, licensure for fitness professionals, exercise is medicine, employing certified fitness professionals, functional fitness training, small group training, high -intensity interval training, fitness programs for older adults, post -rehabilitation classes and body weight training. The present findings are aligned with those reported for the European and worldwide fitness trends
Discrete logic modelling as a means to link protein signalling networks with functional analysis of mammalian signal transduction
Large-scale protein signalling networks are useful for exploring complex biochemical pathways but do not reveal how pathways respond to specific stimuli. Such specificity is critical for understanding disease and designing drugs. Here we describe a computational approachâimplemented in the free CNO softwareâfor turning signalling networks into logical models and calibrating the models against experimental data. When a literature-derived network of 82 proteins covering the immediate-early responses of human cells to seven cytokines was modelled, we found that training against experimental data dramatically increased predictive power, despite the crudeness of Boolean approximations, while significantly reducing the number of interactions. Thus, many interactions in literature-derived networks do not appear to be functional in the liver cells from which we collected our data. At the same time, CNO identified several new interactions that improved the match of model to data. Although missing from the starting network, these interactions have literature support. Our approach, therefore, represents a means to generate predictive, cell-type-specific models of mammalian signalling from generic protein signalling networks
Centrality dependence of pi^[+/-], K^[+/-], p and p-bar production from sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV Au + Au collisions at RHIC
Identified pi^[+/-] K^[+/-], p and p-bar transverse momentum spectra at
mid-rapidity in sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV Au-Au collisions were measured by the PHENIX
experiment at RHIC as a function of collision centrality. Average transverse
momenta increase with the number of participating nucleons in a similar way for
all particle species. The multiplicity densities scale faster than the number
of participating nucleons. Kaon and nucleon yields per participant increase
faster than the pion yields. In central collisions at high transverse momenta
(p_T greater than 2 GeV/c), anti-proton and proton yields are comparable to the
pion yields.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, 307 authors, accepted by Phys. Rev.

Identifying Drug Effects via Pathway Alterations using an Integer Linear Programming Optimization Formulation on Phosphoproteomic Data
Understanding the mechanisms of cell function and drug action is a major endeavor in
the pharmaceutical industry. Drug effects are governed by the intrinsic properties of the
drug (i.e., selectivity and potency) and the specific signaling transduction network of the
host (i.e., normal vs. diseased cells). Here, we describe an unbiased, phosphoproteomicbased
approach to identify drug effects by monitoring drug-induced topology alterations.
With the proposed method, drug effects are investigated under several conditions on a
cell-type specific signaling network. First, starting with a generic pathway made of
logical gates, we build a cell-type specific map by constraining it to fit 13 key
phopshoprotein signals under 55 experimental cases. Fitting is performed via a
formulation as an Integer Linear Program (ILP) and solution by standard ILP solvers; a
procedure that drastically outperforms previous fitting schemes. Then, knowing the cell
topology, we monitor the same key phopshoprotein signals under the presence of drug
and cytokines and we re-optimize the specific map to reveal the drug-induced topology
alterations. To prove our case, we make a pathway map for the hepatocytic cell line
HepG2 and we evaluate the effects of 4 drugs: 3 selective inhibitors for the Epidermal
Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) and a non selective drug. We confirm effects easily
predictable from the drugsâ main target (i.e. EGFR inhibitors blocks the EGFR pathway)
but we also uncover unanticipated effects due to either drug promiscuity or the cellâs
specific topology. An interesting finding is that the selective EGFR inhibitor Gefitinib is
able to inhibit signaling downstream the Interleukin-1alpha (IL-1α) pathway; an effect
that cannot be extracted from binding affinity based approaches. Our method represents
an unbiased approach to identify drug effects on a small to medium size pathways and
is scalable to larger topologies with any type of signaling perturbations (small molecules,
3
RNAi etc). The method is a step towards a better picture of drug effects in pathways,
the cornerstone in identifying the mechanisms of drug efficacy and toxicity
Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents measurements of the and cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a
function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were
collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with
the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity
of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements
varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the
1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured
with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with
predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various
parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between
them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables,

Clinical effectiveness of thrombus aspiration during percutaneous coronary intervention for stent thrombosis in a contemporary setting
Objective-
The impact of adjunctive manual thrombus aspiration (TA) in patients with stent thrombosis (ST) treated with percutaneous intervention has not been evaluated in the current era of potent P2Y12 agents and new-generation drug-eluting stents. We sought to assess the effect of TA using data from a large contemporary registry.
Methods-
The study population was derived from the Essex ST Investigation Registry (ESTHIR), which contains all consecutive cases of angiographically determined definite ST undergoing interventional treatment in a tertiary cardiac centre between November 2015 and June 2018. Propensity score matching was performed to match patients who underwent TA (TA group) to those who did not (n-TA group). The study endpoints were final TIMI flow and survival free of cardiovascular death (CD) or target lesion revascularisation (TLR).
Results-
A total of 128 ST patients were included in the present analysis. The mean age was 65 ± 11 years, and 84% were male. About 90% of the patients presented with STEMI, and 85% had very late ST. Seventy-two patients (56%) underwent TA. After propensity score matching, 30 patients were included in each study group. A higher rate of final TIMI III flow was observed in the TA group (TA vs n-TA group, 100% vs 83%), but this difference did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.052). At 1000 days of follow-up, survival free of CD or TLR was not different between the two groups (p = 0.8).
Conclusion-
In a propensity-matched population of ST patients undergoing PCI in a contemporary setting, TA was not associated with improved final TIMI flow or long-term cardiovascular outcomes
Search for chargino-neutralino production with mass splittings near the electroweak scale in three-lepton final states in âs=13âTeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of âs=13ââTeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139ââfbâ1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015â2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV
