Electrodeposition and Capacitive Behavior of Films for Electrodes of Electrochemical Supercapacitors

    Get PDF
Polypyrrole films were deposited by anodic electropolymerization on stainless steel substrates from aqueous pyrrole solutions containing sodium salicylate and tiron additives. The deposition yield was studied under galvanostatic conditions. The amount of the deposited material was varied by the variation of deposition time at a constant current density. SEM studies showed the formation of porous films with thicknesses in the range of 0–3 μm. Cyclic voltammetry data for the films tested in 0.5 M Na2SO4 solutions showed capacitive behavior and high specific capacitance (SC) in a voltage window of 0.9 V. The films prepared from pyrrole solutions containing tiron showed better capacitive behavior compared to the films prepared from the solutions containing sodium salicylate. A highest SC of 254 F g−1 was observed for the sample with a specific mass of 89 μg cm−2 at a scan rate of 2 mV s−1. The SC decreased with an increasing film thickness and scan rate. The results indicated that the polypyrrole films deposited on the stainless steel substrates by anodic electropolymerization can be used as electrodes for electrochemical supercapacitors (ES)

Does China's public assistance scheme create welfare dependency? An assessment of the welfare of the Urban Minimum Living Standard Guarantee

    Get PDF
In China, there are increasing concerns among the public and academics on welfare dependency caused the 'generous' of benefits of the Urban Minimum Living Standard Scheme (UMLSS). This study examines this issue by analysing the levels of the UMLSS according to international poverty measurements as well as reporting the life experiences of MLSS beneficiaries in Guangzhou city. It concludes that the UMLSS assistance is actually too low to reduce claimants’ work motivation. Instead, supplementary benefits associated with the UMLSS contributing to the recipients’ staying in China’s public assistance scheme in order to gain access to basic housing, health and educational services

Does Private Islamic Schooling Promote Terrorism? An Analysis of the Educational Background of Successful American Homegrown Terrorists

    Get PDF
Some commentators argue that private religious schools are less likely to inculcate the attributes of good citizenship than traditional public schools, specifically proposing that private Islamic schools are relatively more likely to produce individuals sympathetic to terrorism. This study offers a preliminary examination of the question by studying the educational backgrounds of Western educated terrorists. While data are limited, in accord with prior work findings indicate the vast majority of both Islamic and reactionary terrorists attended traditional public schools and had no religious education; hence findings suggest that early religious training and identification may actually encourage prosocial behavior

Common, low-frequency, rare, and ultra-rare coding variants contribute to COVID-19 severity

    Get PDF
The combined impact of common and rare exonic variants in COVID-19 host genetics is currently insufficiently understood. Here, common and rare variants from whole-exome sequencing data of about 4000 SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals were used to define an interpretable machine-learning model for predicting COVID-19 severity. First, variants were converted into separate sets of Boolean features, depending on the absence or the presence of variants in each gene. An ensemble of LASSO logistic regression models was used to identify the most informative Boolean features with respect to the genetic bases of severity. The Boolean features selected by these logistic models were combined into an Integrated PolyGenic Score that offers a synthetic and interpretable index for describing the contribution of host genetics in COVID-19 severity, as demonstrated through testing in several independent cohorts. Selected features belong to ultra-rare, rare, low-frequency, and common variants, including those in linkage disequilibrium with known GWAS loci. Noteworthily, around one quarter of the selected genes are sex-specific. Pathway analysis of the selected genes associated with COVID-19 severity reflected the multi-organ nature of the disease. The proposed model might provide useful information for developing diagnostics and therapeutics, while also being able to guide bedside disease management. © 2021, The Author(s)

Search for collectivity with azimuthal J/psi-hadron correlations in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at ,root s(NN)=5.02 and 8.16 TeV

We present a measurement of azimuthal correlations between inclusive J/psi and charged hadrons in p-Pb collisions recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The J/psi are reconstructed at forward (p-going, 2.03 <y <3.53) and backward (Pb-going, -4.46 <y <-2.96) rapidity via their mu(+)mu(-) decay channel, while the charged hadrons are reconstructed at mid-rapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar <1.8). The correlations are expressed in terms of associated charged-hadron yields per W . trigger. A rapidity gap of at least 1.5 units is required between the trigger J/psi and the associated charged hadrons. Possible correlations due to collective effects are assessed by subtracting the associated per-trigger yields in the low-multiplicity collisions from those in the high-multiplicity collisions. After the subtraction, we observe a strong indication of remaining symmetric structures at Delta phi approximate to 0 and Delta phi approximate to pi), similar to those previously found in two-particle correlations at middle and forward rapidity. The corresponding second-order Fourier coefficient (v(2) ) in the transverse momentum interval between 3 and 6 GeV/c is found to be positive with a significance of about 5 sigma. The obtained results are similar to the J/psi v(2) coefficients measured in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV, suggesting a common mechanism at the origin of the J/psi v(2) . Coherent psi (2S) photo-production in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76TeV

We have performed the first measurement of the coherent psi(2S) photo-production cross section in ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. This charmonium excited state is reconstructed via the psi(2S) -> l(+)l(-) and ->(2S) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-) decays, where the J/psi decays into two leptons. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 22 mu b(-1). The cross section for coherent psi(2S) production in the rapidity interval -0.9 <y <0.9is d sigma(coh)(psi(2S))/dy = 0.83 +/- 0.19 (stat+syst) mb. The psi(2S) to J/psi coherent cross section ratio is 0.34(-0.07)(+0.08)(stat+syst). The obtained results are compared to predictions from theoretical models. Social Assistance in Developing Countries Database Version 5.0

    Get PDF
The Social Assistance in Developing Countries Database is a user-friendly tool that provides summary information on social assistance interventions in developing countries. It provides a summary of the evidence available on the effectiveness of social assistance interventions in developing countries. It focuses on programmes seeking to combine the reduction and mitigation of poverty, with strengthening and facilitating household investments capable of preventing poverty and securing development in the longer term. The inclusion of programmes is on the basis of the availability of information on design features, evaluation, size, scope, or significance. Version 5 of the database updates information on existing programmes and incorporates information on pilot social assistance programmes in Latin America, Asia and Africa. It also adopts a new typology that distinguishes between social assistance programmes providing pure income transfers; programmes that provide transfers plus interventions aimed at human, financial, or physical asset accumulation; and integrated poverty reduction programmes. This new typology has, in our view, several advantages. It is a more flexible, and more accurate, template with which to identify key programme features. It provides a good entry point into the conceptual underpinnings of social assistance programmes
