Improving metaheuristic performance by evolving a variable fitness function.
In this paper we study a complex real world workforce scheduling
problem. We apply constructive search and variable neighbourhood search
(VNS) metaheuristics and enhance these methods by using a variable fitness
function. The variable fitness function (VFF) uses an evolutionary approach to
evolve weights for each of the (multiple) objectives. The variable fitness
function can potentially enhance any search based optimisation heuristic where
multiple objectives can be defined through evolutionary changes in the search
direction. We show that the VFF significantly improves performance of
constructive and VNS approaches on training problems, and ¿learn¿ problem
features which enhance the performance on unseen test problem instances
Metaheuristic design of feedforward neural networks: a review of two decades of research
Over the past two decades, the feedforward neural network (FNN) optimization has been a key interest among the researchers and practitioners of multiple disciplines. The FNN optimization is often viewed from the various perspectives: the optimization of weights, network architecture, activation nodes, learning parameters, learning environment, etc. Researchers adopted such different viewpoints mainly to improve the FNN's generalization ability. The gradient-descent algorithm such as backpropagation has been widely applied to optimize the FNNs. Its success is evident from the FNN's application to numerous real-world problems. However, due to the limitations of the gradient-based optimization methods, the metaheuristic algorithms including the evolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence, etc., are still being widely explored by the researchers aiming to obtain generalized FNN for a given problem. This article attempts to summarize a broad spectrum of FNN optimization methodologies including conventional and metaheuristic approaches. This article also tries to connect various research directions emerged out of the FNN optimization practices, such as evolving neural network (NN), cooperative coevolution NN, complex-valued NN, deep learning, extreme learning machine, quantum NN, etc. Additionally, it provides interesting research challenges for future research to cope-up with the present information processing era
A Survey of Metaheuristic Algorithms for the Design of Cryptographic Boolean Functions
Boolean functions are mathematical objects used in diverse domains and have been actively researched for several decades already. One domain where Boolean functions play an important role is cryptography. There, the plethora of settings one should consider and cryptographic properties that need to be fulfilled makes the search for new Boolean functions still a very active domain. There are several options to construct appropriate Boolean functions: algebraic constructions, random search, and metaheuristics. In this work, we concentrate on metaheuristic approaches and examine the related works appearing in the last 25 years. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first survey work on this topic. Additionally, we provide a new taxonomy of related works and discuss the results obtained. Finally, we finish this survey with potential future research directions
Evolving CNN-LSTM Models for Time Series Prediction Using Enhanced Grey Wolf Optimizer
In this research, we propose an enhanced Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) for designing the evolving Convolutional Neural Network-Long Short-Term Memory (CNN-LSTM) networks for time series analysis. To overcome the probability of stagnation at local optima and a slow convergence rate of the classical GWO algorithm, the newly proposed variant incorporates four distinctive search mechanisms. They comprise a nonlinear exploration scheme for dynamic search territory adjustment, a chaotic leadership dispatching strategy among the dominant wolves, a rectified spiral local exploitation action, as well as probability distribution-based leader enhancement. The evolving CNN-LSTM models are subsequently devised using the proposed GWO variant, where the network topology and learning hyperparameters are optimized for time series prediction and classification tasks. Evaluated using a number of benchmark problems, the proposed GWO-optimized CNN-LSTM models produce statistically significant results over those from several classical search methods and advanced GWO and Particle Swarm Optimization variants. Comparing with the baseline methods, the CNN-LSTM networks devised by the proposed GWO variant offer better representational capacities to not only capture the vital feature interactions, but also encapsulate the sophisticated dependencies in complex temporal contexts for undertaking time-series tasks

Ensemble Differential Evolution with Simulation-Based Hybridization and Self-Adaptation for Inventory Management Under Uncertainty
This study proposes an Ensemble Differential Evolution with Simula-tion-Based
Hybridization and Self-Adaptation (EDESH-SA) approach for inven-tory management
(IM) under uncertainty. In this study, DE with multiple runs is combined with a
simulation-based hybridization method that includes a self-adaptive mechanism
that dynamically alters mutation and crossover rates based on the success or
failure of each iteration. Due to its adaptability, the algorithm is able to
handle the complexity and uncertainty present in IM. Utilizing Monte Carlo
Simulation (MCS), the continuous review (CR) inventory strategy is ex-amined
while accounting for stochasticity and various demand scenarios. This
simulation-based approach enables a realistic assessment of the proposed
algo-rithm's applicability in resolving the challenges faced by IM in practical
settings. The empirical findings demonstrate the potential of the proposed
method to im-prove the financial performance of IM and optimize large search
spaces. The study makes use of performance testing with the Ackley function and
Sensitivity Analysis with Perturbations to investigate how changes in variables
affect the objective value. This analysis provides valuable insights into the
behavior and robustness of the algorithm.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, AsiaSIM 2023 (Springer
