    Farmers Markets and the Local Food System: The Case of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

    In order to examine and obtain a better understanding of the local food system within Adams County, Pennsylvania, this study explores the characteristics and perspectives of the customers and vendors at the farmers markets in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Survey findings from the Gettysburg Farmers Market and the three Adams County Farmers Markets include customer demographic information, perspectives and shopping behavior as well as vendor product information, farm size and location and preference for market management. Introductory background information on the Farm Bill and the influence of agricultural practices on the environment, human health and nutrition and the relationship between farmers markets and the local economy are offered in order to emphasize the value of a well-managed local food system. Conclusions provide evidence that lower income and lower education levels are not sufficiently represented at all the markets and food stamp programs are being underutilized. This study suggests employing additional marketing to target underrepresented demographic groups, public transportation to potentially inaccessible market locations and increased advertisement and encouragement of food stamp programs at all markets in order to expand the customer base and increase access to healthy, local foods for less advantaged citizens. The results from this study are intended to offer evidence that will promote and facilitate market management, strengthen customer/vendor relationships and encourage better ties between the local community and local food systems at the farmers markets within Gettysburg in Adams County, Pennsylvania

    The definitive management of Hirschsprung's disease with the endorectal pull-through procedure

    From 1 July 1974 to 31 August 1985, 99 patients with Hirschsprung's disease were treated at the University of Michigan Mott Children's Hospital; 75 were initially diagnosed and treated at our institution. Of these 75 patients, 55 had standard rectosigmoid disease and 20 had long-segment disease. The endorectal pull-through (ERPT) procedure was used consecutively in 73 of the 75 patients; the other two children died, one because of total intestinal aganglionosis and the other due to severe congenital anomalies, prior to a definitive procedure. Of the 24 patients referred by other institutions, 12 underwent repeat pull-through procedures and 12 required lesser operations to deal with the complications of prior procedures. There were no postoperative deaths and no permanent enterostomies among the 73 consecutive ERPT patients. The follow-up in this series ranges from 4 months to 10 years, and all patients have fecal continence with an average of 3–4 stools daily. Our treatment plan involves the use of suction rectal biopsy for diagnosis and leveling colostomy in the neonatal period. An endorectal pull-through procedure is then carried out between 8 months and 1 year of age. The excellent functional results, 0% operative mortality, low morbidity, and technical ease of performing the ERPT underscore our enthusiasm for continued use of this procedure in Hirschsprung's disease.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47147/1/383_2004_Article_BF00166867.pd

    Scintillation Observations and Response of The Ionosphere to Electrodynamics (SORTIE) Mission First Light

    At low and middle latitudes, wave-like plasma perturbations are thought to provide the seeds for larger perturbations that may evolve non-linearly to produce irregularities, which in turn have deleterious effects on HF communications and global positioning systems. Unfortunately, there is currently no comprehensive atlas of measurements describing the global spatial or temporal distribution of wave-like perturbations in the ionosphere. The SORTIE mission, a CubeSat experiment with team members from ASTRA, AFRL, UTD, and Boston College, was designed to help map and further understand the wave-like plasma perturbation distributions throughout the ionosphere. The SORTIE 6U CubeSat sensor package measures key in-situ plasma parameters, and includes an ion velocity meter and a planar Langmuir probe. SORTIE will provide (1) the initial spectrum of wave perturbations which are the starting point for plasma instabilities; (2) measured electric fields which determine the magnitude of the instability growth rate near the region where plasma bubbles are generated; (3) initial observations of irregularities in plasma density which result from plasma instability growth. The SORTIE spacecraft was deployed from the ISS in February 2020 and began data collections shortly after orbit insertion. The measurements are expected to continue for at least a year. In this presentation we present the first light results of the SORTIE mission, as well as reviewing the science objectives and providing an overview of the spacecraft and instruments

    TRY plant trait database - enhanced coverage and open access

    Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives

    Evaluating the clade size effect in alternative measures of branch support

    The clade size effect refers to a bias that causes middle-sized clades to be less supported than small or large-sized clades. This bias is present in resampling measures of support calculated under maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony and in Bayesian posterior probabilities. Previous analyses indicated that the clade size effect is worst in maximum parsimony, followed by maximum likelihood, while Bayesian inference is the least affected. Homoplasy was interpreted as the main cause of the effect. In this study, we explored the presence of the clade size effect in alternative measures of branch support under maximum parsimony: Bremer support and symmetric resampling, expressed as absolute frequencies and frequency differences. Analyses were performed using 50 molecular and morphological matrices. Symmetric resampling showed the same tendency that bootstrap and jackknife did for maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood. Few matrices showed a signicant bias using Bremer support, presenting a better performance than resampling measures of support and comparable to Bayesian posterior probabilities. Our results indicate that the problem is not maximum parsimony, but resampling measures of support. We corroborated the role of homoplasy as a possible cause of the clade size effect, increasing the number of random trees during the resampling, which together with the higher chances that medium-sized clades have of being contradicted generates the bias during the perturbation of the original matrix, making it stronger in resampling measures of support.Fil: Chemisquy, Maria Amelia.     Post-intervention Status in Patients With Refractory Myasthenia Gravis Treated With Eculizumab During REGAIN and Its Open-Label Extension

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether eculizumab helps patients with anti-acetylcholine receptor-positive (AChR+) refractory generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) achieve the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) post-intervention status of minimal manifestations (MM), we assessed patients' status throughout REGAIN (Safety and Efficacy of Eculizumab in AChR+ Refractory Generalized Myasthenia Gravis) and its open-label extension. METHODS: Patients who completed the REGAIN randomized controlled trial and continued into the open-label extension were included in this tertiary endpoint analysis. Patients were assessed for the MGFA post-intervention status of improved, unchanged, worse, MM, and pharmacologic remission at defined time points during REGAIN and through week 130 of the open-label study. RESULTS: A total of 117 patients completed REGAIN and continued into the open-label study (eculizumab/eculizumab: 56; placebo/eculizumab: 61). At week 26 of REGAIN, more eculizumab-treated patients than placebo-treated patients achieved a status of improved (60.7% vs 41.7%) or MM (25.0% vs 13.3%; common OR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.1-4.5). After 130 weeks of eculizumab treatment, 88.0% of patients achieved improved status and 57.3% of patients achieved MM status. The safety profile of eculizumab was consistent with its known profile and no new safety signals were detected. CONCLUSION: Eculizumab led to rapid and sustained achievement of MM in patients with AChR+ refractory gMG. These findings support the use of eculizumab in this previously difficult-to-treat patient population. CLINICALTRIALSGOV IDENTIFIER: REGAIN, NCT01997229; REGAIN open-label extension, NCT02301624.
