Symplectella rowi (Porifera: Hexactinellida: Lyssacinosida) is a rossellid, not a euplectellid

The monospecific hexactinellid sponge genus Symplectella endemic to New Zealand waters was originally assigned to family Rossellidae within the order Lyssacinosida (subclass Hexasterophora), although affinities to family Euplectellidae were also noted. Seventy-eight years later, the genus was transferred to Euplectellidae (subfamily Corbitellinae) on rather subjective grounds. Here, I test these two competing taxonomic hypotheses with molecular phylogenetic methods and demonstrate that Symplectella rowi is indeed a rossellid, as was originally suggested. The genus is officially transferred back to Rossellidae (subfamily Rossellinae), which represents another small step towards a more natural classification system of glass sponges

Health-Related Perception and Responsibility Behavior Among Individuals With and Without Chronic Illness

Few studies have examined perceptions of responsibility attribution and well-being, and health responsibility behaviors in individuals with none, one, and multiple chronic illnesses. Adults (N = 421) in medical clinics completed questionnaires for this cross-sectional descriptive study. The Revised Causal Dimensional Scale measured responsibility attribution whereas sub-sections of the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program evaluation measured well-being perception and the health responsibility behavior of communication associated with a clinic visit. Chi-square, Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U, and Kruskal-Wallace tests were used to examine demographic characteristics and group differences. Individuals with multiple morbidities and of advanced age perceived their illnesses as more stable and rated their well-being lowest. Females, participants of advanced age, and living with a partner engaged more in health communication. More information about responsibility attribution and chronic illness management is needed. Study results suggest regular assessment of well-being perception and communication training for individuals \u3e45 years to support multiple chronic illness management

A course space construction based on local Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps

Coarse-grid correction is a key ingredient of scalable domain decomposition methods. In this work we construct coarse-grid space using the low-frequency modes of the subdomain Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps and apply the obtained two-level preconditioners to the extended or the original linear system arising from an overlapping domain decomposition. Our method is suitable for parallel implementation, and its efficiency is demonstrated by numerical examples on problems with large heterogeneities for both manual and automatic partitionings

The Boundaries of the Law and the Problem of Jurisdiction in an Early Palestinian Midrash

In this paper I look at one particular exegetical complex through which, I will argue, the rabbis grapple with the question of legal jurisdiction and the status of revelation in the shadow of Roman legal hegemony. I will try to show that rabbinic midrash in its literariness (that is, as a source for the history of ideas, rather than a repository of more or less viable data for reporting history on the ground) is a valuable site for mining the mentalité of tannaitic culture (to the extent that we can posit such a thing), and specifically of tannaitic constructions of the idea of the law from the perspective of the subaltern

The Congress Party as the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer of the Indian State?

The introductory titular deliberation whether the Congress Party or Indian National Congress (INC) could be revered to as the Creator, Preserver and (potential) Destroyer of the Indian State shall hint at a possible viewpoint from which this party can be examined. Readers familiar with Indian religions and mythology may immediately identify the aforementioned characterisation of the INC as an allegory of the famous Trimurti.2 Before delving into the role of the INC through the past decades it is worthwhile to highlight Sir Allan Octavian Hume, who is the author of the "awakening" and rousing poem framing this article. His feats mark a seizable starting point from which the Congress Party set out in its quest to become India’s most dazzling political party. Well aware of the fact that there is no dearth of writings on India’s eldest party this article shall simply attempt to shed light on the Indian National Congress’ impact on forming the Indian State. Thereby the term 'State' shall be understood the way the Indian Constitution designs the Indian Republic which is a union of its various states. Through the Constitution the Constituent Assembly wanted to establish India as a democracy with a strong centre as well as with a strong secular bias. In this concept the people within India were recognised as one Nation, thereby juxtaposing the Indian against the Pakistani concept of Hindus and Muslims being two different Nations. Therefore, for our purposes, any of the INC's impact on the structure of the Indian Union, secular set-up and/or democracy is seen as an action relevant for the situation of the Indian State

Means and End(ing)s: Nomos Versus Narrative in Early Rabbinic Exegesis

Rabbinic literature shares a suggestive array of literary features with later Latin literary sources: commentary, fragmentation and quotation, and a granular attention to language. In this material narrative tends to be lost; classical source texts, such as Vergil, are fetishized, broken apart, and repurposed. In this essay I ask of one corpus--early rabbinic midrash (biblical commentary)--what is the origin and impact of its fragmented and finally incoherent narrative project? At the risk of over-simplifying, I will focus on the rabbis as a case study in the etiology of a more general phenomenon. I will argue that the fragmentation so typical of aggadic midrash is the result of the application of a specifically legal hermeneutic to nonlegal, specifically narrative, sources. As a result, rabbinic midrash beginning in the third century consistently undercuts its own narrative aims. Metaliterary, anthologized, pastiched, commentarial forms become standard in the late antique Roman repertoire, with rabbinic texts we can historicize and contextualize one such transformation, and in so doing center law, legal thinking and forms into literary genealogies
