Extracting spectral density function of a binary composite without a-priori assumption
The spectral representation separates the contributions of geometrical
arrangement (topology) and intrinsic constituent properties in a composite. The
aim of paper is to present a numerical algorithm based on the Monte Carlo
integration and contrainted-least-squares methods to resolve the spectral
density function for a given system. The numerical method is verified by
comparing the results with those of Maxwell-Garnett effective permittivity
expression. Later, it is applied to a well-studied rock-and-brine system to
instruct its utility. The presented method yields significant microstructural
information in improving our understanding how microstructure influences the
macroscopic behaviour of composites without any intricate mathematics.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures and 1 tabl
A hygrothermal modelling approach to water vapour sorption isotherm design for mesoporous humidity buffers
This paper describes the development of a design technique using hygrothermal numerical modelling for top-down predictive design and optimisation of water vapour sorption isotherms to match any humidity buffering application. This was used to inform the design and synthesis of two new mesoporous silica (MS) materials suitable for specific applications. To validate the technique, the new materials were experimentally assessed using gravimetric dynamic vapour sorption (DVS). The experimental isotherms closely matched the optimised isotherm predictions from the design stage, and a positive correlation was observed between the rate of change in adsorbed water content, Δw and the time taken to exceed the permissible upper limit of humidity, φi,U in a closed environment. A positive non-linear correlation was determined between the interior volumetric moisture load, ωml and the mass of adsorbent required to fully achieve humidity buffering between specified lower/ upper limits (φi,L and φi,U). The kinetics of water vapour sorption/ desorption were found to have general agreement when using the current hygrothermal numerical model. Current hygrothermal models appear to significantly underestimate the rate of adsorption/ desorption in rapid-response mesoporous
silica type materials. This is perhaps largely due to the current lack of consideration for scanning curve prediction within hysteresis loops and so is a priority for future research
Calorimetric and transport investigations of CePd_{2+x}Ge_{2-x} (x=0 and 0.02) up to 22 GPa
The influence of pressure on the magnetically ordered CePd_{2.02}Ge_{1.98}
has been investigated by a combined measurement of electrical resistivity,
, and ac-calorimetry, C(T), for temperatures in the range 0.3 K<T<10 K
and pressures, p, up to 22 GPa. Simultaneously CePd_2Ge_2 has been examined by
down to 40 mK. In CePd_{2.02}Ge_{1.98} and CePd_2Ge_2 the magnetic
order is suppressed at a critical pressure p_c=11.0 GPa and p_c=13.8 GPa,
respectively. In the case of CePd_{2.02}Ge_{1.98} not only the temperature
coefficient of , A, indicates the loss of magnetic order but also the
ac-signal recorded at low temperature. The residual
resistivity is extremely pressure sensitive and passes through a maximum and
then a minimum in the vicinity of p_c. The (T,p) phase diagram and the
A(p)-dependence of both compounds can be qualitatively understood in terms of a
pressure-tuned competition between magnetic order and the Kondo effect
according to the Doniach picture. The temperature-volume (T,V) phase diagram of
CePd_2Ge_2 combined with that of CePd_2Si_2 shows that in stoichiometric
compounds mainly the change of interatomic distances influences the exchange
interaction. It will be argued that in contrast to this the much lower
p_c-value of CePd_{2.02}Ge_{1.98} is caused by an enhanced hybridization
between 4f and conduction electrons.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure
Appropriate disclosure of a diagnosis of dementia : identifying the key behaviours of 'best practice'
Background: Despite growing evidence that many people with dementia want to know their diagnosis, there is wide variation in attitudes of professionals towards disclosure. The disclosure of the diagnosis of dementia is increasingly recognised as being a process rather than a one-off behaviour. However, the different behaviours that contribute to this process have not been comprehensively defined. No intervention studies to improve diagnostic disclosure in dementia have been reported to date. As part of a larger study to develop an intervention to promote appropriate disclosure, we sought to identify important disclosure behaviours and explore whether supplementing a literature review with other methods would result in the identification of new behaviours. Methods: To identify a comprehensive list of behaviours in disclosure we conducted a literature review, interviewed people with dementia and informal carers, and used a consensus process involving health and social care professionals. Content analysis of the full list of behaviours was carried out. Results: Interviews were conducted with four people with dementia and six informal carers. Eight health and social care professionals took part in the consensus panel. From the interviews, consensus panel and literature review 220 behaviours were elicited, with 109 behaviours over-lapping. The interviews and consensus panel elicited 27 behaviours supplementary to the review. Those from the interviews appeared to be self-evident but highlighted deficiencies in current practice and from the panel focused largely on balancing the needs of people with dementia and family members. Behaviours were grouped into eight categories: preparing for disclosure; integrating family members; exploring the patient's perspective; disclosing the diagnosis; responding to patient reactions; focusing on quality of life and well-being; planning for the future; and communicating effectively. Conclusion: This exercise has highlighted the complexity of the process of disclosing a diagnosis of dementia in an appropriate manner. It confirms that many of the behaviours identified in the literature (often based on professional opinion rather than empirical evidence) also resonate with people with dementia and informal carers. The presence of contradictory behaviours emphasises the need to tailor the process of disclosure to individual patients and carers. Our combined methods may be relevant to other efforts to identify and define complex clinical practices for further study. This project is funded by UK Medical Research Council, Grant reference number G0300999

Molecular dynamics in polymer networks containing caprolactone and ethylene glycol moieties studied by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy
Copolymer networks with methacrylate main chain and caprolactone and ethylene glycol side groups were obtained by free radical copolymerisation of caprolactone methacrylate (CLMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA). Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy was used to analyse molecular mobility of the different groups in the system. Only one main dielectric relaxation process was found in CLMA/PEGMA copolymer networks, located between those of the corresponding homonetworks, indicating that the system does not present phase separation. The copolymers show a secondary relaxation process at temperatures below −50 °C, which can be assigned to the overlapping of the corresponding secondary processes for the homopolymer networks; one of them was related to the local mobility of caprolactone units in CLMA and the second one was assigned to the twisting motions within ethylene glycol moiety in PEGMA. Besides the relaxation processes, the mobility of space charges has been analysed by means of conductivity and electric modulus formalisms. The support from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) and FEDER funds under the project MAT2012-38359-C03-01 is gratefully acknowledged.Sabater I Serra, R.; Escobar Ivirico, JL.; Romero Colomer, FJ.; Andrio Balado, A.; Gómez Ribelles, JL. Radiation of Extant Cetaceans Driven by Restructuring of the Oceans
The remarkable fossil record of whales and dolphins (Cetacea) has made them an exemplar of macroevolution. Although their overall adaptive transition from terrestrial to fully aquatic organisms is well known, this is not true for the radiation of modern whales. Here, we explore the diversification of extant cetaceans by constructing a robust molecular phylogeny that includes 87 of 89 extant species. The phylogeny and divergence times are derived from nuclear and mitochondrial markers, calibrated with fossils. We find that the toothed whales are monophyletic, suggesting that echolocation evolved only once early in that lineage some 36–34 Ma. The rorqual family (Balaenopteridae) is restored with the exclusion of the gray whale, suggesting that gulp feeding evolved 18–16 Ma. Delphinida, comprising all living dolphins and porpoises other than the Ganges/Indus dolphins, originated about 26 Ma; it contains the taxonomically rich delphinids, which began diversifying less than 11 Ma. We tested 2 hypothesized drivers of the extant cetacean radiation by assessing the tempo of lineage accumulation through time. We find no support for a rapid burst of speciation early in the history of extant whales, contrasting with expectations of an adaptive radiation model. However, we do find support for increased diversification rates during periods of pronounced physical restructuring of the oceans. The results imply that paleogeographic and paleoceanographic changes, such as closure of major seaways, have influenced the dynamics of radiation in extant cetaceans
