    Impacto de mudanças de estratégias de manejo e do clima em pastagem nativa

    A hydrologic-based forage production simulation model (PHYGROW) and a population mixture simulation model (POPMIX) were used respectively to simulate forage production and carrying capacity of a subtropical shrubland complex of over 34 species grazed by various ratios of cattle and goats with a population of indigenous animals (white-tailed deer) over a 20 year simulated weather profile. The Farm Level Income and Policy Simulation Model (FLIPSIM) were used to evaluate and quantify the impacts of alternative management strategies and climate change on grazingland ecosystems. The study was carried out to analyze the feasibility and profitability of a representative cattle goat farm in the South Texas. On average, net cash farm income under 50:50 cattle:goat ratio and climatic conditions falls by as much as 2% relative to 70:30 for the farm studied. Real net worth for the farm declines as much as 9.4% and 16% over the study period under the highest to lowest cattle:goat ratio and, dry to normal climatic conditions, respectively. The modeled results produced useful information showing the socioeconomic consequences for a typical South Texas farm impacted for alternative management strategies and climatic conditions.Modelos de simulação de forragem (PHYGROW) e de simulação de populações mistas de animais (POPMIX) foram usados respectivamente para simular produção de forragem e estimar a capacidade de suporte numa complexa área de pastagem nativa com mais de 34 espécies de plantas arbóreo-arbustivas na qual pastejavam bovinos e caprinos com uma população de animais nativos (veado) num período de 20 anos. Utilizou-se um programa de simulação em uma propriedade (FLIPSIM), para avaliar e quantificar os impactos de estratégias de manejo alternativas e de mudanças climáticas no ecossistema pastagem nativa. O principal objetivo do estudo foi o de unir os modelos já desenvolvidos. Com este procedimento integrado, o estudo procurou analisar a viabilidade e lucratividade de uma fazenda representativa da produção de bovinos e caprinos no Sul do Texas. Em média, a renda líquida da fazenda, com a relação bovino:caprino 50:50 e condições climáticas, cai cerca de 2% em comparação com a relação 70:30 na fazenda estudada. O acervo de bens em termos reais referentes à fazenda declina cerca de 9,4% e 16% no período de estudo, quando passou da mais alta para a mais baixa relação bovino:caprino, bem como quando passou da condição climática seca para a normal. Os resultados do modelo produziram informações úteis que mostram as conseqüências socioeconômicas numa propriedade típica do Sul do Texas, afetada por estratégias de manejo alternativas e por condições climáticas

    Duloxetine in the treatment of major depressive disorder: an open-label study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic and highly disabling condition. Existing pharmacotherapies produce full remission in only 30% to 40% of treated patients. Antidepressants exhibiting dual reuptake inhibition of both serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) may achieve higher rates of remission compared with those acting upon a single neurotransmitter. In this study, the safety and efficacy of duloxetine, a potent dual reuptake inhibitor of 5-HT and NE, were examined.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Patients (N = 533) meeting DSM-IV criteria for MDD received open-label duloxetine (60 mg once a day [QD]) for 12 weeks during the initial phase of a relapse prevention trial. Patients were required to have a 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD<sub>17</sub>) total score ≥18 and a Clinical Global Impression of Severity (CGI-S) score ≥4 at baseline. Efficacy measures included the HAMD<sub>17 </sub>total score, HAMD<sub>17 </sub>subscales, the CGI-S, the Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI-I) scale, Visual Analog Scales (VAS) for pain, and the Symptom Questionnaire, Somatic Subscale (SQ-SS). Quality of life was assessed using the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) and the Quality of Life in Depression Scale (QLDS). Safety was evaluated by recording spontaneously-reported treatment-emergent adverse events, changes in vital signs and laboratory analytes, and the Patient Global Impression of Sexual Function (PGI-SF) scale.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The rate of discontinuation due to adverse events was 11.3%. Treatment-emergent adverse events reported by ≥10% duloxetine-treated patients were nausea, headache, dry mouth, somnolence, insomnia, and dizziness. Following 12 weeks of open-label duloxetine therapy, significant improvements were observed in all assessed efficacy and quality of life measures. In assessments of depression severity (HAMD<sub>17</sub>, CGI-S) the magnitude of symptom improvement continued to increase at each study visit, while for painful physical symptoms the onset of improvement was rapid and reached a maximum after 2 to 3 weeks of treatment.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this open-label phase of a relapse prevention study, duloxetine (60 mg QD) was shown to be safe and effective in the treatment of MDD.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>NCT00036309.</p

    Moving beyond fan typologies: The impact of social integration on team loyalty in football

    The purpose of this paper is to develop detailed insight into loyalty among football fans of Hibernian FC, moving beyond typologies to a more socially grounded approach. Issues explored include patterns of consumption, distinctions between fan groups, and antecedents of loyalty. The origins and development of the club are evaluated, and consumer fanaticism, football fan loyalty, consumption behaviour, and the sociological impact of fan communities are discussed. Data were collected using a variety of methods, including participant observation, in-depth interviews, and analysis of websites and fan forums. Key findings relate to the impact of family and community influences on loyalty, initial experiences of developing associations with the club, through to the impact of socialisation, and the lived experience of being a supporter. A supporter matrix is constructed as a portrayal of the loyalty found at the club. A range of theoretical implications is considered, and the matrix promoted as a tool for understanding loyalty in clubs with similar social structures and community connections

    Tactual perception: a review of experimental variables and procedures

    This paper reviews literature on tactual perception. Throughout this review we will highlight some of the most relevant variables in touch literature: interaction between touch and other senses; type of stimuli, from abstract stimuli such as vibrations, to two- and three-dimensional stimuli, also considering concrete stimuli such as the relation between familiar and unfamiliar stimuli or the haptic perception of faces; type of participants, separating studies with blind participants, studies with children and adults, and an analysis of sex differences in performance; and finally, type of tactile exploration, considering conditions of active and passive touch, the relevance of movement in touch and the relation between exploration and time. This review intends to present an organised overview of the main variables in touch experiments, attending to the main findings described in literature, to guide the design of future works on tactual perception and memory.This work was funded by the Portuguese “Foundation for Science and Technology” through PhD scholarship SFRH/BD/35918/2007

    Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.
