Phase diagrams of the generalized spin-1/2 ladder under staggered field and dimerization: A renormalization group study
In the weak-coupling regime of the continuous theories, two sets of one-loop
renormalization group equations are derived and solved to disclose the phase
diagrams of the antiferromagnetic generalized two-leg spin-1/2 ladder under the
effect of (I) a staggered external magnetic field and (II) an explicit
dimerization. In model (I), the splitting of the SU(2) critical line into
U(1) and Z critical surfaces is observed; while in model (II), two critical
surfaces arising from their underlying critical lines with SU(2) and Z
characteristics merge into an SU(2) critical surface on the line where the
model attains its highest symmetry.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Excitation spectrum and ground state properties of the S=1/2 Heisenberg ladder with staggered dimerization
We have studied the excitation spectrum of the quantum spin ladder
with staggered dimerization by dimer series expansions, diagrammatic analysis
of an effective interacting Bose gas of local triplets, and exact
diagonalization of small clusters. We find that the model has two massive
phases, with predominant inter-chain (rung) or intra-chain correlations. The
transition from the rung dimer into the intra-chain dimer phase is
characterized by softening of the triplet spectrum at . The excitation
spectrum as well as the spin correlations away from and close to the critical
line are calculated. The location of the phase boundary is also determined.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
Competing interactions in the XYZ model
We study the interplay between a XY anisotropy , exchange modulations
and an external magnetic field along the z direction in the XYZ chain using
bosonization and Lanczos diagonalization techniques. We find an Ising critical
line in the space of couplings which occur due to competing relevant
perturbations which are present. More general situations are also discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Quantum renormalization group of XYZ model in a transverse magnetic field
We have studied the zero temperature phase diagram of XYZ model in the
presence of transverse magnetic field. We show that small anisotropy (0 =<
Delta <1) is not relevant to change the universality class. The phase diagram
consists of two antiferromagnetic ordering and a paramagnetic phases. We have
obtained the critical exponents, fixed points and running of coupling constants
by implementing the standard quantum renormalization group. The continuous
phase transition from antiferromagnetic (spin-flop) phase to a paramagnetic one
is in the universality class of Ising model in transverse field. Numerical
exact diagonalization has been done to justify our results. We have also
addressed on the application of our findings to the recent experiments on
Cs_2CoCl_4.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, new references added to the present versio
Z_3 Quantum Criticality in a spin-1/2 chain model
The stability of the magnetization plateau phase of the XXZ spin-1/2
Heisenberg chain with competing interactions is investigated upon switching on
a staggered transverse magnetic field. Within a bosonization approach, it is
shown that the low-energy properties of the model are described by an effective
two-dimensional XY model in a three-fold symmetry-breaking field. A phase
transition in the three-state Potts universality class is expected separating
the plateau phase to a phase where the spins are polarized along the
staggered magnetic field. The Z critical properties of the transition are
determined within the bosonization approach.Comment: 5 pages, revised versio
Density Matrix Renormalisation Group Approach to the Massive Schwinger Model
The massive Schwinger model is studied, using a density matrix
renormalisation group approach to the staggered lattice Hamiltonian version of
the model. Lattice sizes up to 256 sites are calculated, and the estimates in
the continuum limit are almost two orders of magnitude more accurate than
previous calculations. Coleman's picture of `half-asymptotic' particles at
background field theta = pi is confirmed. The predicted phase transition at
finite fermion mass (m/g) is accurately located, and demonstrated to belong in
the 2D Ising universality class.Comment: 38 pages, 18 figures, submitted to PR
Jordan-Wigner approach to dynamic correlations in spin-ladders
We present a method for studying the excitations of low-dimensional quantum
spin systems based on the Jordan-Wigner transformation. Using an extended
RPA-scheme we calculate the correlation function of neighboring spin flips
which well approximates the optical conductivity of . We
extend this approach to the two-leg --ladder by numbering the spin
operators in a meander-like sequence. We obtain good agreement with the optical
conductivity of the spin ladder compound (La,Ca)CuO for
polarization along the rungs. For polarization along the legs higher order
correlations are important to explain the weight of high-energy continuum
excitations and we estimate the contribution of 4-- and 6--fermion processes.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figure
Quantum criticalities in a two-leg antiferromagnetic S=1/2 ladder induced by a staggered magnetic field
We study a two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder in the presence of a
staggered magnetic field. We consider two parameter regimes: strong (weak)
coupling along the legs and weak (strong) coupling along the rungs. In both
cases, the staggered field drives the Haldane spin-liquid phase of the ladder
towards a Gaussian quantum criticality. In a generalized spin ladder with a
non-Haldane, spontaneously dimerized phase, the staggered magnetic field
induces an Ising quantum critical regime. In the vicinity of the critical
lines, we derive low-energy effective field theories and use these descriptions
to determine the dynamical response functions, the staggered spin
susceptibility and the string order parameter.Comment: 29 pages of revtex, 10 figure
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
