ADSORPTION OF KRYPTON AND XENON BY VARIOUS MATERIALS
The adsorptive capacities of various inorganic adsorbents and activated charcoals for krypton and xenon were determined. Columbia-G activated charcoal had the highest capacity for both krypton and xenon at pressures from 0.01 to 125 mm Hg and temperaturens from 2 to 85 deg C. If a value of 1 is assigned to the capacity of this charcoal at 28 deg C for krypton, other charcoals range from 0.63 to 0.84, molecular sieves (except 4A) from 0.11 to 0.20, and some silica genls from 0.05 to 0.07. Various othenr adsorbennts, including one variety of silica gel and molecular sieve 4A, range from 0.005 to 0.032. Molecular sienve 5A and Columbia-G charcoal adsorbed 11.5 times more xenon than krypton. Adsorption of 7.5% water by either of these adsorbents lowerend their capacity for krypton 25 to 30%, while saturating the sieve material ( approximates 15% H2O) lowered the krypton capacity 80%. Cyclical Quantum Memory for Photonic Qubits
We have performed a proof-of-principle experiment in which qubits encoded in
the polarization states of single-photons from a parametric down-conversion
source were coherently stored and read-out from a quantum memory device. The
memory device utilized a simple free-space storage loop, providing a cyclical
read-out that could be synchronized with the cycle time of a quantum computer.
The coherence of the photonic qubits was maintained during switching operations
by using a high-speed polarizing Sagnac interferometer switch.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
A high-flux source of polarization-entangled photons from a periodically-poled KTP parametric downconverter
We have demonstrated a high-flux source of polarization-entangled photons
using a type-II phase-matched periodically-poled KTP parametric downconverter
in a collinearly propagating configuration. We have observed quantum
interference between the single-beam downconverted photons with a visibility of
99% and a measured coincidence flux of 300/s/mW of pump. The
Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt version of Bell's inequality was violated with a
value of 2.711 +/- 0.017.Comment: 7 pages submitted to Physical Review
On Quantum Control via Encoded Dynamical Decoupling
I revisit the ideas underlying dynamical decoupling methods within the
framework of quantum information processing, and examine their potential for
direct implementations in terms of encoded rather than physical degrees of
freedom. The usefulness of encoded decoupling schemes as a tool for engineering
both closed- and open-system encoded evolutions is investigated based on simple
examples.Comment: 12 pages, no figures; REVTeX style. This note collects various
theoretical considerations complementing/motivated by the experimental
demonstration of encoded control by Fortunato et a
Protecting Quantum Information with Entanglement and Noisy Optical Modes
We incorporate active and passive quantum error-correcting techniques to
protect a set of optical information modes of a continuous-variable quantum
information system. Our method uses ancilla modes, entangled modes, and gauge
modes (modes in a mixed state) to help correct errors on a set of information
modes. A linear-optical encoding circuit consisting of offline squeezers,
passive optical devices, feedforward control, conditional modulation, and
homodyne measurements performs the encoding. The result is that we extend the
entanglement-assisted operator stabilizer formalism for discrete variables to
continuous-variable quantum information processing.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
From early markers to neuro-developmental mechanisms of autism
A fast growing field, the study of infants at risk because of having an older sibling with autism (i.e. infant sibs) aims to identify the earliest signs of this disorder, which would allow for earlier diagnosis and intervention. More importantly, we argue, these studies offer the opportunity to validate existing neuro-developmental models of autism against experimental evidence. Although autism is mainly seen as a disorder of social interaction and communication, emerging early markers do not exclusively reflect impairments of the “social brain”. Evidence for atypical development of sensory and attentional systems highlight the need to move away from localized deficits to models suggesting brain-wide involvement in autism pathology. We discuss the implications infant sibs findings have for future work into the biology of autism and the development of interventions
