Search for charginos in e+e- interactions at sqrt(s) = 189 GeV

An update of the searches for charginos and gravitinos is presented, based on a data sample corresponding to the 158 pb^{-1} recorded by the DELPHI detector in 1998, at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. No evidence for a signal was found. The lower mass limits are 4-5 GeV/c^2 higher than those obtained at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The (\mu,M_2) MSSM domain excluded by combining the chargino searches with neutralino searches at the Z resonance implies a limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino which, for a heavy sneutrino, is constrained to be above 31.0 GeV/c^2 for tan(beta) \geq 1.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure

Updated precision measurement of the average lifetime of B hadrons

    Get PDF
The measurement of the average lifetime of B hadrons using inclusively reconstructed secondary vertices has been updated using both an improved processing of previous data and additional statistics from new data. This has reduced the statistical and systematic uncertainties and gives \tau_{\mathrm{B}} = 1.582 \pm 0.011\ \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.027\ \mathrm{(syst.)}\ \mathrm{ps.} Combining this result with the previous result based on charged particle impact parameter distributions yields \tau_{\mathrm{B}} = 1.575 \pm 0.010\ \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.026\ \mathrm{(syst.)}\ \mathrm{ps.

Limits on the production of scalar leptoquarks from Z (0) decays at LEP

    Get PDF
A search has been made for pairs and for single production of scalar leptoquarks of the first and second generations using a data sample of 392000 Z0 decays from the DELPHI detector at LEP 1. No signal was found and limits on the leptoquark mass, production cross section and branching ratio were set. A mass limit at 95% confidence level of 45.5 GeV/c2 was obtained for leptoquark pair production. The search for the production of a single leptoquark probed the mass region above this limit and its results exclude first and second generation leptoquarks D0 with masses below 65 GeV/c2 and 73 GeV/c2 respectively, at 95% confidence level, assuming that the D0lq Yukawa coupling alpha(lambda) is equal to the electromagnetic one. An upper limit is also given on the coupling alpha(lambda) as a function of the leptoquark mass m(D0)

The extinction model studied in this analysis is motivated by the search for signatures of strong gravity at the TeV scale (terascale gravity) and assumes the existence of string couplings in the strong-coupling limit. In this limit, the string model predicts the suppression of all high-transverse-momentum standard model processes, including jet production, beyond a certain energy scale. To test this prediction, the measured transverse-momentum spectrum is compared to the theoretical prediction of the standard model. No significant deficit of events is found at high transverse momentum. A 95% confidence level lower limit of 3.3 TeV is set on the extinction mass scale

Searches for electroweak neutralino and chargino production in channels with Higgs, Z, and W bosons in pp collisions at 8 TeV

    Get PDF
Searches for supersymmetry (SUSY) are presented based on the electroweak pair production of neutralinos and charginos, leading to decay channels with Higgs, Z, and W bosons and undetected lightest SUSY particles (LSPs). The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 19.5 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV collected in 2012 with the CMS detector at the LHC. The main emphasis is neutralino pair production in which each neutralino decays either to a Higgs boson (h) and an LSP or to a Z boson and an LSP, leading to hh, hZ, and ZZ states with missing transverse energy (E-T(miss)). A second aspect is chargino-neutralino pair production, leading to hW states with E-T(miss). The decays of a Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair, to a photon pair, and to final states with leptons are considered in conjunction with hadronic and leptonic decay modes of the Z and W bosons. No evidence is found for supersymmetric particles, and 95% confidence level upper limits are evaluated for the respective pair production cross sections and for neutralino and chargino mass values

Study of bs 0-b̄̄s 0 oscillations and bs 0 lifetimes using hadronic decays of bs 0 mesons

    No full text
Oscillations of Bs mesons have been studied in samples selected from about 3.5 million hadronic Z decays detected by DELPHI between 1992 and 1995. One analysis uses events in the exclusive decay channels: (Formula Presented),where the D decays are completely reconstructed. In addition,Bs 0-B̄̄s 0 oscillations have been studied in events with an exclusivelyreconstructed Ds accompanied in the same hemisphere bya high momentum hadron of opposite charge. Combining the two analyses,a limit on the mass difference between the physical Bs states has been obtained: ∆mB0s > 4.0 ps−1 at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivityof ∆mB0s = 3.2 ps−1. Using the latter sample of events, the Bs lifetime has been measured and an upper limit on the decay width difference between the two physical Bs states has been obtained: (Formula Presented) The combination of these results with those obtained using Dsℓ∓ sample gives: ∆mB0s > 4.9 ps−1 at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivityof ∆mB0s = 8.7 ps−1. © Springer-Verlag 2000

Measurement of the mass and width of the W boson in e+ e- collisions at s**(1/2) = 189-GeV

    No full text
A measurement of the W mass and width has been performed by the DELPHI collaboration using the data collected during 1998. The data sample has an integrated luminosity of 155 pb^{-1} and an average centre-of-mass energy of 188.6 GeV. Results are obtained by applying the method of direct reconstruction of the mass of the W from its decay products in both the W+W- -> lvqq and W+W- -> qqqq channels. The W mass result for the 1998 data set is M_W = 80.387 +/- 0.087 (stat) +/- 0.034 (syst) +/- 0.017 (LEP) +/- 0.035 (FSI) GeV/c2, where FSI represents the uncertainty due to final state interaction effects in the qqqq channel, and LEP represents that arising from the knowledge of the beam energy of the accelerator. Combining this result with those previously published by the DELPHI collaboration gives the result M_W = 80.359 +/- 0.074 (stat) +/- 0.032 (syst) +/- 0.017 (LEP) +/- 0.033 (FSI) GeV/c2. The combined value for the W width is \Gamma_W = 2.266 +/- 0.176 (stat) +/- 0.056 (syst) +/- 0.052 (FSI) GeV/c2.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, Accepted by Phys. Lett.

A precise measurement of the τ polarisation at LEP-1

    No full text
The τ polarisation has been studied with the e+e- → τ+τ- data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1993, 1994 and 1995 around the Z resonance firstly through the exclusive decay channels evv̄, μvvμ, πv, ρv, and a1v and secondly with an inclusive hadronic analysis which benefits from a higher efficiency and a better systematic precision. The results have been combined with those previously published on 1990 to 1992 DELPHI data, to produce results which reflect the full LEP-1 statistics. The fit of the τ polarisation dependence on the production angle yielded the polarisation parameters Aτ = 0.1359 ± 0.0096 and Ae = 0.1382 ± 0.0116. From these results the ratio of the vector and axial-vector effective couplings v̄τ/āτ = 0.0683 ± 0.0048 and v̄e/āe = 0.0694 ± 0.0058 have been derived, compatible with e-τ universality. With the assumption of lepton universality, the ratio of vector to axial-vector effective couplings for leptons v̄ι/āι = 0.0687 ± 0.0037 was obtained, implying a value of the effective weak mixing angle sin2 θlepteff= 0.23282 ± 0.00092
