Impact of Memory Frequency Scaling on User-centric Smartphone Workloads
Improving battery life in mobile phones has become a top concern with the increase in memory and computing requirements of applications with tough quality-of-service needs. Many energy-efficient mobile solutions vary the CPU and GPU voltage/frequency to save power consumption. However, energy-aware control over the memory bus connecting the various on-chip subsystems has had much less interest. This measurement-based study first analyse the CPU, GPU and memory cost (i.e. product of utilisation and frequency) of user-centric smartphone workloads. The impact of memory frequency scaling on power consumption and quality-of-service is also measured. We also present a preliminary analysis into the frequency levels selected by the different default governors of the CPU/GPU/memory components.We show that an interdependency exists between the CPU and memory governors and that it may cause unnecessary increase in power consumption, due to interference with the CPU frequency governor. The observations made in this measurement-based study can also reveal some design insights to system designers
Direct numerical simulation of a tip-leakage flow in a planar duct with a longitudinal slit
A planar duct flow configuration with a cross-flow injected from a longitudinal slit close to the upper wall of the duct is studied by using a direct numerical simulation approach to explore the underlying flow mechanism in relation to the tip-leakage vortex (TLV), which is one of the most important flow phenomena in turbomachinery. Major characteristics of TLV in a rotor of turbomachinery are identified in the current flow model. The analysis of mean and instantaneous flow fields reveals that the interaction between the main (axial) flow and jet (cross) flow is the primary source of the generation of the TLV. The evolution of the TLV is then investigated, and a vortex breakup phenomenon is identified. The evolution of TLV can be divided into three phases, i.e. the formation phase, the break-up phase, and the diffusion phase. Mean streamlines and turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) budgets are analysed, showing that the high TKE central spot in the formation phase is due to the interaction between highly swirling vortex filaments and mean velocity gradient. In the outer part of the TLV, the TKE is mainly produced in the shear-layer and transported towards the centre by the turbulence transport
Random Planar Lattices and Integrated SuperBrownian Excursion
In this paper, a surprising connection is described between a specific brand
of random lattices, namely planar quadrangulations, and Aldous' Integrated
SuperBrownian Excursion (ISE). As a consequence, the radius r_n of a random
quadrangulation with n faces is shown to converge, up to scaling, to the width
r=R-L of the support of the one-dimensional ISE. More generally the
distribution of distances to a random vertex in a random quadrangulation is
described in its scaled limit by the random measure ISE shifted to set the
minimum of its support in zero.
The first combinatorial ingredient is an encoding of quadrangulations by
trees embedded in the positive half-line, reminiscent of Cori and Vauquelin's
well labelled trees. The second step relates these trees to embedded (discrete)
trees in the sense of Aldous, via the conjugation of tree principle, an
analogue for trees of Vervaat's construction of the Brownian excursion from the
bridge.
From probability theory, we need a new result of independent interest: the
weak convergence of the encoding of a random embedded plane tree by two contour
walks to the Brownian snake description of ISE.
Our results suggest the existence of a Continuum Random Map describing in
term of ISE the scaled limit of the dynamical triangulations considered in

Comparison of DSP-based nonlinear equalizers for intra-channel nonlinearity compensation in coherent optical OFDM
A novel versatile digital signal processing (DSP)-based equalizer using support vector machine regression (SVR) is proposed for 16-quadrature amplitude modulated (16-QAM) coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) and experimentally compared to traditional DSP-based deterministic fiber-induced nonlinearity equalizers (NLEs), namely the full-field digital back-propagation (DBP) and the inverse Volterra series transfer function-based NLE (V-NLE). For a 40 Gb/s 16-QAM CO-OFDM at 2000 km, SVR-NLE extends the optimum launched optical power (LOP) by 4 dB compared to V-NLE by means of reduction of fiber nonlinearity. In comparison to full-field DBP at a LOP of 6 dBm, SVR-NLE outperforms by ∼1 dB in Q-factor. In addition, SVR-NLE is the most computational efficient DSP-NLE
The VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey. The dependence of clustering on galaxy stellar mass at z~1
Aims: We use the VVDS-Deep first-epoch data to measure the dependence of
galaxy clustering on galaxy stellar mass, at z~0.85.
Methods: We measure the projected correlation function wp(rp) for sub-samples
with 0.5<z<1.2 covering different mass ranges between 10^9 and 10^11 Msun. We
quantify in detail the observational selection biases using 40 mock catalogues
built from the Millennium run and semi-analytic models.
Results: Our simulations indicate that serious incompleteness in mass is
present only for log(M/Msun)<9.5. In the mass range log(M/Msun)=[9.0-9.5], the
photometric selection function of the VVDS misses 2/3rd of the galaxies. The
sample is virtually 100% complete above 10^10 Msun. We present the first direct
evidence for a clear dependence of clustering on the galaxy stellar mass at
z~0.85. The clustering length increases from r0 ~ 2.76 h^-1 Mpc for galaxies
with mass M>10^9 Msun to r0 ~ 4.28 h^-1 Mpc for galaxies more massive than
10^10.5 Msun. At the same time, the slope increases from ~ 1.67 to ~ 2.28.
A comparison of the observed wp(rp) to local measurements by the SDSS shows
that the evolution is faster for objects less massive than ~10^10.5 Msun. This
is interpreted as a higher dependence on redshift of the linear bias b_L for
the more massive objects. While for the most massive galaxies b_L decreases
from 1.5+/-0.2 at z~0.85 to 1.33+/-0.03 at z~0.15, the less massive population
maintains a virtually constant value b_L~1.3. This result is in agreement with
a scenario in which more massive galaxies formed at high redshift in the
highest peaks of the density field, while less massive objects form at later

Using biomarkers to predict TB treatment duration (Predict TB): a prospective, randomized, noninferiority, treatment shortening clinical trial
Background : By the early 1980s, tuberculosis treatment was shortened from 24 to 6 months, maintaining relapse rates of 1-2%. Subsequent trials attempting shorter durations have failed, with 4-month arms consistently having relapse rates of 15-20%. One trial shortened treatment only among those without baseline cavity on chest x-ray and whose month 2 sputum culture converted to negative. The 4-month arm relapse rate decreased to 7% but was still significantly worse than the 6-month arm (1.6%, P<0.01). We hypothesize that PET/CT characteristics at baseline, PET/CT changes at one month, and markers of residual bacterial load will identify patients with tuberculosis who can be cured with 4 months (16 weeks) of standard treatment.Methods: This is a prospective, multicenter, randomized, phase 2b, noninferiority clinical trial of pulmonary tuberculosis participants. Those eligible start standard of care treatment. PET/CT scans are done at weeks 0, 4, and 16 or 24. Participants who do not meet early treatment completion criteria (baseline radiologic severity, radiologic response at one month, and GeneXpert-detectable bacilli at four months) are placed in Arm A (24 weeks of standard therapy). Those who meet the early treatment completion criteria are randomized at week 16 to continue treatment to week 24 (Arm B) or complete treatment at week 16 (Arm C). The primary endpoint compares the treatment success rate at 18 months between Arms B and C.Discussion: Multiple biomarkers have been assessed to predict TB treatment outcomes. This study uses PET/CT scans and GeneXpert (Xpert) cycle threshold to risk stratify participants. PET/CT scans are not applicable to global public health but could be used in clinical trials to stratify participants and possibly become a surrogate endpoint. If the Predict TB trial is successful, other immunological biomarkers or transcriptional signatures that correlate with treatment outcome may be identified. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT02821832
Phosphorylation of the androgen receptor is associated with reduced survival in hormonerefractory prostate cancer patients
Cell line studies demonstrate that the PI3K/Akt pathway is upregulated in hormone-refractory prostate cancer (HRPC) and can result in phosphorylation of the androgen receptor (AR). The current study therefore aims to establish if this has relevance to the development of clinical HRPC. Immunohistochemistry was employed to investigate the expression and phosphorylation status of Akt and AR in matched hormone-sensitive and -refractory prostate cancer tumours from 68 patients. In the hormone-refractory tissue, only phosphorylated AR (pAR) was associated with shorter time to death from relapse (<i>P</i>=0.003). However, when an increase in expression in the transition from hormone-sensitive to -refractory prostate cancer was investigated, an increase in expression of PI3K was associated with decreased time to biochemical relapse (<i>P</i>=0.014), and an increase in expression of pAkt<sup>473</sup> and pAR<sup>210</sup> were associated with decreased disease-specific survival (<i>P</i>=0.0019 and 0.0015, respectively). Protein expression of pAkt<sup>473</sup> and pAR<sup>210</sup> also strongly correlated (<i>P</i><0.001, c.c.=0.711) in the hormone-refractory prostate tumours. These results provide evidence using clinical specimens, that upregulation of the PI3K/Akt pathway is associated with phosphorylation of the AR during development of HRPC, suggesting that this pathway could be a potential therapeutic target
Development of a LAMP assay for detection of Leishmania infantum infection in dogs using conjunctival swab samples
Background: Leishmania infantum infections in dogs play a crucial role in the transmission of pathogens causing visceral leishmaniasis to humans in the Gansu province, northwest China. To be able to control zoonotic transmission of the parasite to humans, a non-invasive loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay to specifically detect L. infantum infections in dogs was developed. Methods: The primers used in the LAMP assay were designed to target kinetoplast DNA minicircle sequences of the L. infantum isolate MCAN/CN/90/SC and tested using DNA isolated from promastigotes of different Leishmania species. The LAMP assay was evaluated with conjunctional swab samples obtained from 111 and 33 dogs living in an endemic and a non-endemic region of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis in the Gansu province, respectively. The LAMP assay was also compared with conventional PCR, ELISA and microscopy using conjunctional swab, serum and bone marrow samples from the dogs, respectively. Results: The LAMP assay detected 1 fg of L. infantum DNA purified from cultured promastigotes which was 10-fold more sensitive than a conventional PCR test using Leishmania genus-specific primers. No cross reaction was observed with DNA isolated from promastigotes of L. donovani, L. major, L. tropica, and L. braziliensis, and the L. infantum reference strain MHOM/TN/80/IPT1. The L. infantum-positive rates obtained for field-collected samples were 61.3%, 58.6%, 40.5% and 10.8% by LAMP, PCR, ELISA and microscopy, respectively. As only one out of the 33 samples from control dogs from the non-endemic region of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis was positive by the LAMP assay and the PCR test, the observed true negative rate (specificity) was 97% for both methods. Conclusion: This study has shown that the non-invasive, conjunctional swab-based LAMP assay developed was more sensitive in the detection of leishmaniasis in dogs than PCR, ELISA and microscopy. The findings indicate that the LAMP assay is a sensitive and specific method for the field surveillance of domestic dogs, particularly of asymptomatic canines, in ZVL-endemic areas in western China
Transplanckian axions !?
We discuss quantum gravitational effects in Einstein theory coupled to
periodic axion scalars to analyze the viability of several proposals to achieve
superplanckian axion periods (aka decay constants) and their possible
application to large field inflation models. The effects we study correspond to
the nucleation of euclidean gravitational instantons charged under the axion,
and our results are essentially compatible with (but independent of) the Weak
Gravity Conjecture, as follows: Single axion theories with superplanckian
periods contain gravitational instantons inducing sizable higher harmonics in
the axion potential, which spoil superplanckian inflaton field range. A similar
result holds for multi-axion models with lattice alignment (like the
Kim-Nilles-Peloso model). Finally, theories with axions can still achieve a
moderately superplanckian periodicity (by a factor) with no higher
harmonics in the axion potential. The Weak Gravity Conjecture fails to hold in
this case due to the absence of some instantons, which are forbidden by a
discrete gauge symmetry. Finally we discuss the realization of
these instantons as euclidean D-branes in string compactifications.Comment: 46 pages, 6 figures. Added references, clarifications, and missing

Width distribution of contact lines on a disordered substrate
We have studied the roughness of a contact line of a liquid meniscus on a
disordered substrate by measuring its width distribution. The comparison
between the measured width distribution and the width distribution calculated
in previous works, extended here to the case of open boundary conditions,
confirms that the Joanny-de Gennes model is not sufficient to describe the
dynamics of contact lines at the depinning threshold. This conclusion is in
agreement with recent measurements which determine the roughness exponent by
