Greater sharing of potentially sensitive data raises important ethical, legal and social issues (ELSI), which risk hindering and even preventing useful data sharing if not properly addressed. One such important issue is respecting the privacy-related interests of individuals whose data are used in genomic research and clinical care. As part of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH), we examined the ELSI status of health-related data that are typically considered ‘sensitive’ in international policy and data protection laws. We propose that ‘tiered protection’ of such data could be implemented in contexts such as that of the GA4GH Beacon Project to facilitate responsible data sharing. To this end, we discuss a Data Sharing Privacy Test developed to distinguish degrees of sensitivity within categories of data recognised as ‘sensitive’. Based on this, we propose guidance for determining the level of protection when sharing genomic and health-related data for the Beacon Project and in other international data sharing initiatives

The production of ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S)
mesons decaying into the dimuon final state is studied with
the LHCb detector using a data sample corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 3.3 pb−1 collected in proton–proton
collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 2.76 TeV. The
differential production cross-sections times dimuon branching
fractions are measured as functions of the ϒ transverse
momentum and rapidity, over the ranges pT < 15 GeV/c
and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The total cross-sections in this kinematic
region, assuming unpolarised production, are measured to be
σ (pp → ϒ(1S)X) × B
ϒ(1S)→μ+μ−
= 1.111 ± 0.043 ± 0.044 nb,
σ (pp → ϒ(2S)X) × B
ϒ(2S)→μ+μ−
= 0.264 ± 0.023 ± 0.011 nb,
σ (pp → ϒ(3S)X) × B
ϒ(3S)→μ+μ−
= 0.159 ± 0.020 ± 0.007 nb,
where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common infections associated with health care, but its importance as a global health priority is not fully understood. We quantified the burden of SSI after gastrointestinal surgery in countries in all parts of the world.
Methods: This international, prospective, multicentre cohort study included consecutive patients undergoing elective or emergency gastrointestinal resection within 2-week time periods at any health-care facility in any country. Countries with participating centres were stratified into high-income, middle-income, and low-income groups according to the UN's Human Development Index (HDI). Data variables from the GlobalSurg 1 study and other studies that have been found to affect the likelihood of SSI were entered into risk adjustment models. The primary outcome measure was the 30-day SSI incidence (defined by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria for superficial and deep incisional SSI). Relationships with explanatory variables were examined using Bayesian multilevel logistic regression models. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02662231.
Findings: Between Jan 4, 2016, and July 31, 2016, 13 265 records were submitted for analysis. 12 539 patients from 343 hospitals in 66 countries were included. 7339 (58·5%) patient were from high-HDI countries (193 hospitals in 30 countries), 3918 (31·2%) patients were from middle-HDI countries (82 hospitals in 18 countries), and 1282 (10·2%) patients were from low-HDI countries (68 hospitals in 18 countries). In total, 1538 (12·3%) patients had SSI within 30 days of surgery. The incidence of SSI varied between countries with high (691 [9·4%] of 7339 patients), middle (549 [14·0%] of 3918 patients), and low (298 [23·2%] of 1282) HDI (p < 0·001). The highest SSI incidence in each HDI group was after dirty surgery (102 [17·8%] of 574 patients in high-HDI countries; 74 [31·4%] of 236 patients in middle-HDI countries; 72 [39·8%] of 181 patients in low-HDI countries). Following risk factor adjustment, patients in low-HDI countries were at greatest risk of SSI (adjusted odds ratio 1·60, 95% credible interval 1·05–2·37; p=0·030). 132 (21·6%) of 610 patients with an SSI and a microbiology culture result had an infection that was resistant to the prophylactic antibiotic used. Resistant infections were detected in 49 (16·6%) of 295 patients in high-HDI countries, in 37 (19·8%) of 187 patients in middle-HDI countries, and in 46 (35·9%) of 128 patients in low-HDI countries (p < 0·001).
Interpretation: Countries with a low HDI carry a disproportionately greater burden of SSI than countries with a middle or high HDI and might have higher rates of antibiotic resistance. In view of WHO recommendations on SSI prevention that highlight the absence of high-quality interventional research, urgent, pragmatic, randomised trials based in LMICs are needed to assess measures aiming to reduce this preventable complication

A search is performed for DsJ(∗)+ mesons in the reactions pp→D∗+KS0X and pp→D∗0K+X using data collected at
centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the LHCb detector. For the D∗+KS0 final state, the decays D∗+→D0π+ with D0→K−π+ and D0→K−π+π+π− are used. For D∗0K+, the
decay D∗0→D0π0 with D0→K−π+ is used. A prominent
Ds1(2536)+ signal is observed in both D∗+KS0 and D∗0K+ final states. The resonances Ds1∗(2700)+ and Ds3∗(2860)+ are
also observed, yielding information on their properties, including spin-parity
assignments. The decay Ds2∗(2573)+→D∗+KS0 is observed
for the first time, at a significance of 6.9 σ, and its branching
fraction relative to the Ds2∗(2573)+→D+KS0 decay mode is
measured

Violations of CPT symmetry and Lorentz invariance are searched for by studying interference effects in B^{0} mixing and in B_{s}^{0} mixing. Samples of B^{0}→J/ψK_{S}^{0} and B_{s}^{0}→J/ψK^{+}K^{-} decays are recorded by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb^{-1}. No periodic variations of the particle-antiparticle mass differences are found, consistent with Lorentz invariance and CPT symmetry. Results are expressed in terms of the standard model extension parameter Δa_{μ} with precisions of O(10^{-15}) and O(10^{-14}) GeV for the B^{0} and B_{s}^{0} systems, respectively. With no assumption on Lorentz (non)invariance, the CPT-violating parameter z in the B_{s}^{0} system is measured for the first time and found to be Re(z)=-0.022±0.033±0.005 and Im(z)=0.004±0.011±0.002, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic

Quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong force, describes interactions of coloured quarks and gluons and the formation of hadronic matter. Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. Particles with an alternative quark content are known as exotic states. Here a study is reported of an exotic narrow state in the D0D0π+ mass spectrum just below the D*+D0 mass threshold produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar T+cc tetraquark with a quark content of ccu⎯⎯⎯d⎯⎯⎯ and spin-parity quantum numbers JP = 1+. Study of the DD mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell D*+ mesons is consistent with the observed D0π+ mass distribution. To analyse the mass of the resonance and its coupling to the D*D system, a dedicated model is developed under the assumption of an isoscalar axial-vector T+cc state decaying to the D*D channel. Using this model, resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are determined to reveal important information about the nature of the T+cc state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed

The first model-independent measurement of the charm mixing parameters
in the decay D-0 -> K-S(0)pi(+)pi(-) is reported, using a sample of pp
collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV.
The measured values are
x = (0.86 +/- 0.53 +/- 0.17) x 10(-2), y = (+0.03 +/- 0.46 +/- 0.13) x
10(-2),
where the first uncertainties are statistical and include small
contributions due to the external input for the strong phase measured by
the CLEO collaboration, and the second uncertainties are systematic

The product of the A(b)(0) ((B) over bar (0)) differential production
cross-section and the branching fraction of the decay A(b)(0)-> J/psi
pK(-) ((B) over bar (0)-> J/psi p (K) over bar*(892)(0)) is measured
as a function of the beauty hadron transverse momentum, p(T), and
rapidity, y. The kinematic region of the measurements is p(T) <20 GeV/c
and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The measurements use a data sample corresponding to
an integrated luminosity of 3fb(-1) collected by the LHCb detector in pp
collisions at centre-of-mass energies root s=7 TeV in 2011 and root s=8
TeV in 2012. Based on previous LHCb results of the fragmentation
fraction ratio, f(Ab0)/f(d), the branching fraction of the decay
A(b)(0)-> J/psi pK(-) is measured to be
B(A(b)(0)-> J/psi pK(-))=(3.17 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.07 +/-
0.34(-0.28)(+0.45))x10(-4)
where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic,
the third is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the
decay (B) over bar (0)-> J/psi p (K) over bar*(892)(0), and the fourth
is due to the knowledge of f(Ab0)/f(d). The sum of the asymmetries in
the production and decay between A(b)(0) and (A) over bar (0)(b) is also
measured as a function of p(T) and y. The previously published branching
fraction of A(b)(0)-> J/psi p pi(-), relative to that of A(b)(0)-> J/psi
pK(-), is updated. The branching fractions of A(b)(0)-> P-c(+)(-> J/psi
p)K- are determined
