    Quantum Control of Interacting Bosons in Periodic Optical Lattice

    We study the avoided crossings in the dynamics of quantum controlled excitations for an interacting two-boson system in an optical lattice. Specifically, we perform numerical simulations of quantum control in this system where driving pulses connect the undriven stationary states in a manner characteristic of Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP). We demonstrate that the dynamics of such a transition is affected by chaos induced avoided crossings, resulting in a loss in coherence of the final outcome in the adiabatic limit.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physica E.     Associations between sole ulcer, white line disease and digital dermatitis and the milk yield of 1824 dairy cows on 30 dairy cow farms in England and Wales from February 2003–November 2004

    The milk yields of 1824 cows were used to investigate the effect of lesion-specific causes of lameness, based on farmer treatment and diagnosis of lame cows, on milk yield. A three level hierarchical model of repeated test day yields within cows within herds was used to investigate the impact of lesion-specific causes of lameness (sole ulcer, white line disease, digital dermatitis and other causes) on milk yield before and after treatment compared with unaffected cows. Cattle which developed sole ulcer (SU) and white line disease (WLD) were higher yielding cattle before they were diagnosed. Their milk production fell to below that of the mean of unaffected cows before diagnosis and remained low after diagnosis. In cattle which developed digital dermatitis (DD) there was no significant difference in milk yield before treatment and a slightly raised milk yield immediately after treatment. The estimated milk loss attributable to SU and WLD was approximately 570kg and 370kg respectively. These results highlight that specific types of lameness vary by herds and within herds they are associated with higher yielding cattle. Consequently lesion-specific lameness reduction programmes targeting the cow and farm specific causes of lameness might be more effective than generic recommendations. They also highlight the importance of milk loss when estimating the economic impact of SU and WLD on the farms profitability

    The formation and excitation of hypernuclei through kaon photoproduction is reviewed. Basic features of the production process are emphasized. The possibility of extracting new information on hypernuclear structure and on the wave function of the bound Λ\Lambda is discussed. New results are presented for the quasifree production process A(γ,KΛ)BA(\gamma, K \Lambda)B. Observables of this reaction are shown to be sensitive to the Λ\Lambda-nucleus final state interaction.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures.     Branding fresh food: Who is willing to pay more for beef?

    Retail beef markets not offering objective grade indicators in-store leave consumers uncertain about the quality of beef they purchase. The introduction of fresh brands can better meet consumers’ expectations. Willingness-to-pay for ‘ideal’ quality cuts represents the maximum premiums brands could achieve. Using Australian consumers’ survey data, the maximum premiums are modelled using zero-inflated negative binomial models. Results indicate that buyer’s characteristics and perceptions about product attributes influence the premiums for high-quality beef that consumers are willing to pay for a cut considered ‘ideal’, indicating the maximum premium that brands could achieve in relevant segments. The premiums indicate there is substantial potential for beef cuts that reduce purchase risk by more assuredly meeting buyer’s preferences in Australia

    Transient increase in atherosclerotic plaque macrophage content following Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia in ApoE-deficient mice

    Introduction: Despite epidemiological associations between community acquired pneumonia (CAP) and myocardial infarction, mechanisms that modify cardiovascular disease during CAP are not well defined. In particular, largely due to a lack of relevant experimental models, the effect of pneumonia on atherosclerotic plaques is unclear. We describe the development of a murine model of the commonest cause of CAP, Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia, on a background of established atherosclerosis. We go on to use our model to investigate the effects of pneumococcal pneumonia on atherosclerosis. Methods: C57BL/6J and ApoE-/- mice were fed a high fat diet to promote atherosclerotic plaque formation. Mice were then infected with a range of S. pneumoniae serotypes (1, 4 or 14) with the aim of establishing a model to study atherosclerotic plaque evolution after pneumonia and bacteremia. Laser capture microdissection of plaque macrophages enabled transcriptomic analysis. Results: Intratracheal instillation of S. pneumoniae in mice fed a cholate containing diet resulted in low survival rates following infection, suggestive of increased susceptibility to severe infection. Optimization steps resulted in a final model of male ApoE-/- mice fed a Western diet then infected by intranasal instillation of serotype 4 (TIGR4) S. pneumoniae followed by antibiotic administration. This protocol resulted in high rates of bacteremia (88.9%) and survival (88.5%). Pneumonia resulted in increased aortic sinus plaque macrophage content 2 weeks post pneumonia but not at 8 weeks, and no difference in plaque burden or other plaque vulnerability markers were found at either time point. Microarray and qPCR analysis of plaque macrophages identified downregulation of two E3 ubiquitin ligases, Huwe1 and Itch, following pneumonia. Treatment with atorvastatin failed to alter plaque macrophage content or other plaque features. Discussion: Without antibiotics, ApoE-/- mice fed a high fat diet were highly susceptible to mortality following S. pneumoniae infection. The major infection associated change in plaque morphology was an early increase in plaque macrophages. Our results also hint at a role for the ubiquitin proteasome system in the response to pneumococcal infection in the plaque microenvironment

    ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities) initiated community-based surveillance in 1987 for myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease (CHD) incidence and mortality and created a prospective cohort of 15,792 Black and White adults ages 45 to 64 years. The primary aims were to improve understanding of the decline in CHD mortality and identify determinants of subclinical atherosclerosis and CHD in Black and White middle-age adults. ARIC has examined areas including health disparities, genomics, heart failure, and prevention, producing more than 2,300 publications. Results have had strong clinical impact and demonstrate the importance of population-based research in the spectrum of biomedical research to improve health

    Marking gender studies:the (Radical) value of creative-critical assessment

    Feminist pedagogies have established the need to query power structures in terms of curriculum content and teaching praxis. However, the topic of student assessment poses difficulties: it is a means through which students’ performance is evaluated and quantified according to set institutionalised criteria that values particular forms of hegemonic knowledge. The following article presents a self-reflexive exploration of assessment within a Gender Studies module taught in the Autumn semesters of the 2017/18 and 2018/19 academic years at a UK university. The module was a core component of the institution’s MA in Gender Studies. This was an exciting opportunity to experiment with assessment styles corresponding to feminist pedagogies to help develop students’ and instructors’ disciplinary scope and explore the radical potential for creative-critical approaches to assessment. This article outlines some the challenges of employing alternative modes of learning and teaching from a feminist perspective and suggests some strategies to address these

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio
