Demonstrating the utility of a drought termination framework: prospects for groundwater level recovery in England and Wales in 2018 or beyond
During prolonged droughts, information is needed about when and how the extreme event is likely to terminate. A drought termination framework based on historical data comprising current rate and historical ensemble approaches is presented here for assessing the prospects of groundwater level recovery. The current rate approach is evaluated across all initialisation months in the historical record and provides reasonable estimates for the duration of recovery from relatively severe groundwater level deficiencies in some slowly responding boreholes. The utility of the framework is demonstrated through a near-real-time application to 30 groundwater boreholes in England and Wales from October 2017 onwards. Recovery during winter 2017/18 was considered unlikely, as some aquifers required increases in groundwater levels that have occurred seldom, if ever before, in long historical records. Data to February 2018 confirmed the success of these pre-winter outlooks. Recovery by mid- to late-2018 or beyond was more likely; slow rates of recovery by October 2017 and increasing return periods of effective rainfall required for recovery over timeframes in the summer half-year underlined the importance of winter rainfall and suggested that the historical ensemble may underestimate the duration of recovery. There was moderate confidence for a delay in recovery beyond the end of 2018 in some slowly responding Chalk boreholes in south-central and eastern England. There is considerable potential for the transferability of the drought termination framework beyond the UK wherever there are sufficient historical data. The two approaches provide limited information in distinctly different circumstances and their relevance and value may differ in space and time, suggesting their complimentary use as the most robust way to incorporate information on the prospects for groundwater level recovery into existing seasonal forecasting services, supporting decision-making by water managers during prolonged droughts
At-scale Model Output Statistics in mountain environments (AtsMOS v1.0)
This paper introduces the AtsMOS (At-scale Model Output Statistics) workflow, designed to enhance mountain meteorology predictions through the downscaling of coarse numerical weather predictions using local observational data. AtsMOS provides a modular, open-source toolkit for local and large-scale forecasting of various meteorological variables through modified model output statistics - and may be applied to data from a single station or an entire network. We demonstrate its effectiveness through an example application at the summit of Mt. Everest, where it improves the prediction of both meteorological variables (e.g. wind speed, temperature) and derivative variables (e.g. facial frostbite time) critical for mountaineering safety. As a bridge between numerical weather prediction models and ground observations, AtsMOS contributes to hazard mitigation, water resource management, and other weather-dependent issues in mountainous regions and beyond.</p
Dealing With Complexity and Extreme Events Using a Bottom-Up, Resource-Based Vulnerability Perspective
We discuss the adoption of a bottom-up, resource-based vulnerability approach in evaluating the effect of climate and other environmental and societal threats to societally critical resources. This vulnerability concept requires the determination of the major threats to local and regional water, food, energy, human health, and ecosystem function resources from extreme events including those from climate but also from other social and environmental issues. After these threats are identified for each resource, then the relative risks can be compared with other risks in order to adopt optimal preferred mitigation/adaptation strategies. This is a more inclusive way of assessing risks, including from climate variability and climate change, than using the outcome vulnerability approach adopted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). A contextual vulnerability assessment using the bottom-up, resource-based framework is a more inclusive approach for policy makers to adopt effective mitigation and adaptation methodologies to deal with the complexity of the spectrum of social and environmental extreme events that will occur in the coming decades as the range of threats are assessed, beyond just the focus on CO 2 and a few other greenhouse gases as emphasized in the IPCC assessments. 1
BHPR research: qualitative1. Complex reasoning determines patients' perception of outcome following foot surgery in rheumatoid arhtritis
Background: Foot surgery is common in patients with RA but research into surgical outcomes is limited and conceptually flawed as current outcome measures lack face validity: to date no one has asked patients what is important to them. This study aimed to determine which factors are important to patients when evaluating the success of foot surgery in RA Methods: Semi structured interviews of RA patients who had undergone foot surgery were conducted and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis of interviews was conducted to explore issues that were important to patients. Results: 11 RA patients (9 ♂, mean age 59, dis dur = 22yrs, mean of 3 yrs post op) with mixed experiences of foot surgery were interviewed. Patients interpreted outcome in respect to a multitude of factors, frequently positive change in one aspect contrasted with negative opinions about another. Overall, four major themes emerged. Function: Functional ability & participation in valued activities were very important to patients. Walking ability was a key concern but patients interpreted levels of activity in light of other aspects of their disease, reflecting on change in functional ability more than overall level. Positive feelings of improved mobility were often moderated by negative self perception ("I mean, I still walk like a waddling duck”). Appearance: Appearance was important to almost all patients but perhaps the most complex theme of all. Physical appearance, foot shape, and footwear were closely interlinked, yet patients saw these as distinct separate concepts. Patients need to legitimize these feelings was clear and they frequently entered into a defensive repertoire ("it's not cosmetic surgery; it's something that's more important than that, you know?”). Clinician opinion: Surgeons' post operative evaluation of the procedure was very influential. The impact of this appraisal continued to affect patients' lasting impression irrespective of how the outcome compared to their initial goals ("when he'd done it ... he said that hasn't worked as good as he'd wanted to ... but the pain has gone”). Pain: Whilst pain was important to almost all patients, it appeared to be less important than the other themes. Pain was predominately raised when it influenced other themes, such as function; many still felt the need to legitimize their foot pain in order for health professionals to take it seriously ("in the end I went to my GP because it had happened a few times and I went to an orthopaedic surgeon who was quite dismissive of it, it was like what are you complaining about”). Conclusions: Patients interpret the outcome of foot surgery using a multitude of interrelated factors, particularly functional ability, appearance and surgeons' appraisal of the procedure. While pain was often noted, this appeared less important than other factors in the overall outcome of the surgery. Hyperresolution information and hyperresolution ignorance in modelling the hydrology of the land surface
There is a strong drive towards hyperresolution earth system models in order to resolve finer scales of motion in the atmosphere. The problem of obtaining more realistic representation of terrestrial fluxes of heat and water, however, is not just a problem of moving to hyperresolution grid scales. It is much more a question of a lack of knowledge about the parameterisation of processes at whatever grid scale is being used for a wider modelling problem. Hyperresolution grid scales cannot alone solve the problem of this hyperresolution ignorance. This paper discusses these issues in more detail with specific reference to land surface parameterisations and flood inundation models. The importance of making local hyperresolution model predictions available for evaluation by local stakeholders is stressed. It is expected that this will be a major driving force for improving model performance in the future.

Hepatic Uptake in the Dog: Comparison of Uptake in Hepatocytes and Human Embryonic Kidney Cells Expressing Dog Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide 1B4
ABSTRACT: Although the dog is frequently used in pharmacological, pharmacokinetic, and drug safety studies, little is known about canine drug transporters. Dog organic anion-transporting polypeptide (Oatp1b4) has recently been cloned (Comp Biochem Physiol C Toxicol Pharmacol 151:393-399, 2010), but the contribution of Oatp1b4 to hepatic uptake has yet to be clarified. This study compares the transport characteristics of dog Oatp1b4 with those of human OATP1B1/1B3 and demonstrates the importance of Oatp1b4 in the uptake of anionic compounds in dog hepatocytes. Oatp1b4 is the predominant Oatp in dog liver with expression levels double and 30 times those of Oatp2b1 and Oatp1a2, respectively. Uptake of a range of typical OATP substrates by Oatp1b4-expressing HEK293 cells was compared with that in fresh dog hepatocytes. All compounds tested were transported by Oatp1b4 and uptake intrinsic clearance (CL int, uptake ) in dog hepatocytes in sodium-free buffer was correlated significantly with CL int, uptake in Oatp1b4-expressing cells. Dog in vivo clearance for five substrates was predicted more accurately from CL int, uptake than from metabolic intrinsic clearance (CL int, met ), indicating that uptake governs the overall in vivo hepatic clearance of these anionic compounds in dog. The substrate specificities of dog Oatp1b4 appear to be similar to those of human OATP1B1/OATP1B3, whereas the relative uptake clearance of substrates for Oatp1b4 correlate better with OATP1B3 than with the more abundant hepatic analog OATP1B1

and future climate risks, put in place plans to adapt to
these risks, and identify opportunities to strengthen
their resilience. This guidance summarises the latest
evidence in line with national climate risk assessment
and adaptation planning, and is intended to support
decision makers, senior leaders, sustainability
practitioners and risk experts within HEIs to
undertake this urgent work. Potential activities are
identified for key actors and communities including
sector bodies and government.
Although the focus is on HEIs, the recommendations
and approaches covered are applicable to Further
Education Institutions (FEIs), albeit at more local
scales and with less onus on research considerations
Training future generations to deliver evidence-based conservation and ecosystem management
1. To be effective, the next generation of conservation practitioners and managers need to be critical thinkers with a deep understanding of how to make evidence-based decisions and of the value of evidence synthesis. 2. If, as educators, we do not make these priorities a core part of what we teach, we are failing to prepare our students to make an effective contribution to conservation practice. 3. To help overcome this problem we have created open access online teaching materials in multiple languages that are stored in Applied Ecology Resources. So far, 117 educators from 23 countries have acknowledged the importance of this and are already teaching or about to teach skills in appraising or using evidence in conservation decision-making. This includes 145 undergraduate, postgraduate or professional development courses. 4. We call for wider teaching of the tools and skills that facilitate evidence-based conservation and also suggest that providing online teaching materials in multiple languages could be beneficial for improving global understanding of other subject areas.Peer reviewe
