Detector Description and Performance for the First Coincidence Observations between LIGO and GEO
For 17 days in August and September 2002, the LIGO and GEO interferometer
gravitational wave detectors were operated in coincidence to produce their
first data for scientific analysis. Although the detectors were still far from
their design sensitivity levels, the data can be used to place better upper
limits on the flux of gravitational waves incident on the earth than previous
direct measurements. This paper describes the instruments and the data in some

Search for Colour Reconnection Effects in e+e- -> W+W- -> hadrons through Particle-Flow Studies at LEP
A search for colour reconnection effects in hadronic decays of W pairs is
performed with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209
GeV. The analysis is based on the study of the particle flow between jets
associated to the same W boson and between two different W bosons in qqqq
events. The ratio of particle yields in the different interjet regions is found
to be sensitive to colour reconnection effects implemented in some
hadronisation models. The data are compared to different models with and
without such effects. An extreme scenario of colour reconnection is ruled out
Measurement of Bose-Einstein Correlations in e+e- -> W+W- at root(s)=189GeV
We investigate Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in W-pair production at
root(s)=189GeV using the L3 detector at LEP. We observe BEC between particles
from a single W decay in good agreement with those from a light-quark Z decay
sample. We investigate their possible existence between particles coming from
different W's. No evidence for such inter-W BEC is found
Measurement of the Cross Section of W-boson pair production at LEP
The cross section of W-boson pair-production is measured with the L3 detector
at LEP. In a data sample corresponding to a total luminosity of 629.4/pb,
collected at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 to 209 GeV, 9834
four-fermion events with W bosons decaying into hadrons or leptons are
selected. The total cross section is measured with a precision of 1.4 % and
agrees with the Standard Model expectation. Assuming charged-lepton
universality, the branching fraction for hadronic W-boson decays is measured to
be: Br(W-->hadrons) = 67.50 +- 0.42 (stat.) +- 0.30(syst.) %, in agreement with
the Standard Model. Differential cross sections as a function of the W-
production angle are also measured for the semi-leptonic channels qqev and
qqmv
Lichenometric dating (lichenometry) and the biology of the lichen genus rhizocarpon:challenges and future directions
Lichenometric dating (lichenometry) involves the use of lichen measurements to estimate the age of exposure of various substrata. Because of low radial growth rates and considerable longevity, species of the crustose lichen genus Rhizocarpon have been the most useful in lichenometry. The primary assumption of lichenometry is that colonization, growth and mortality of Rhizocarpon are similar on surfaces of known and unknown age so that the largest thalli present on the respective faces are of comparable age. This review describes the current state of knowledge regarding the biology of Rhizocarpon and considers two main questions: (1) to what extent does existing knowledge support this assumption; and (2) what further biological observations would be useful both to test its validity and to improve the accuracy of lichenometric dates? A review of the Rhizocarpon literature identified gaps in knowledge regarding early development, the growth rate/size curve, mortality, regeneration, competitive effects, colonization, and succession on rock surfaces. The data suggest that these processes may not be comparable on different rock surfaces, especially in regions where growth rates and thallus turnover are high. In addition, several variables could differ between rock surfaces and influence maximum thallus size, including rate and timing of colonization, radial growth rates, environmental differences, thallus fusion, allelopathy, thallus mortality, colonization and competition. Comparative measurements of these variables on surfaces of known and unknown age may help to determine whether the basic assumptions of lichenometry are valid. Ultimately, it may be possible to take these differences into account when interpreting estimated dates
EU-NATO relations:Running on the fumes of informed deconfliction
This article provides the framework for the contributions to this special issue. It first puts the theme into context and outlines the main issues that justify further analytical engagement with European Union (EU)âNorth Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) relations to the extent we propose here. We then provide some historical background to frame the discussion, and in doing so also outline the current state of interaction between the EU and NATO. We then briefly contextualise the changing strategic environment shaping the relationship, including recent proposals to implement their declared âstrategic partnershipâ. This introduction then presents an overview of the existing literature to set the stage for a renewed look at the research agenda that has emerged over the last two decades. We close with an outline of the individual contributions to this special issue, which are presented in two sections: one focusing on theoretical and conceptual approaches to the study of EU of EUâNATO relations, and one on the inter-organisational relationship in practice, followed by a concluding synopsis and outlook
Studies of Hadronic Event Structure in e+e- Annihilation from 30 GeV to 209 GeV with the L3 Detector
In this Report, QCD results obtained from a study of hadronic event structure
in high energy e^+e^- interactions with the L3 detector are presented. The
operation of the LEP collider at many different collision energies from 91 GeV
to 209 GeV offers a unique opportunity to test QCD by measuring the energy
dependence of different observables. The main results concern the measurement
of the strong coupling constant, \alpha_s, from hadronic event shapes and the
study of effects of soft gluon coherence through charged particle multiplicity
and momentum distributions.Comment: To appear in Physics Report
Properties of the Top Quark
The top quark was discoverd at the CDF and D0 experiments in 1995. As the
partner of the bottom quark its properties within the Standard Model are fully
defined. Only the mass is a free parameter. The measurement of the top quark
mass and the verification of the expected properties have been an important
topic of experimental top quark physics since. In this review the recent
results on top quark properties obtained by the Tevatron experiments CDF and D0
are summarised. At the advent of the LHC special emphasis is given to the basic
measurement methods and the dominating systematic uncertainties.Comment: Habilitation thesis, revised and updated for publication in EPJ
