    The role of the mentor in the introduction of new principals: Contributions from research in a chilean ase

    Se entregan los resultados de la evaluación de la implementación de un Programa de Inducción de Directores nóveles de establecimientos públicos chilenos. Específicamente, se analizó el rol del mentor de estos directores, que es nuevo en el sistema educativo chileno, para identificar qué tipos de efectos se reconocen como generados por la relación entre mentor y director y su aporte a los objetivos del programa. Dentro de una evaluación positiva del programa, se destaca el aporte principal de la mentoría en el desarrollo de procesos reflexivos en torno al rol del director. Asimismo, se destaca la necesidad de que, en el marco de esta relación, se desarrollen además aspectos que ayuden al conocimiento de normativas, políticas educacionales o formas de trabajo en la escuela, así como que se desarrollen habilidades directivas, de liderazgo o toma de decisionesIn this paper, the results of the evaluation of the implementation of an Induction Program of new directors of Chilean public establishments are delivered. Specifically, the role of the mentor of these directors, who is new to the Chilean educational system, was analyzed to identify which types of effects are recognized as generated by the relationship between mentor and director and their contribution to the objectives of the program. Within a positive evaluation of the program, the main contribution of mentoring in the development of reflexive processes around the role of the director is highlighted. Likewise, the participants emphasized that, within this relationship, help is needed in the knowledge of regulations, educational policies or forms of work in the school, as well as the development of managerial, leadership or decision-making skill

    Educational Accountability: High and Low Points of Its Implementation and Challenges for Latin America

    Este trabajo busca avanzar en esta discusión existente respecto del aporte del mecanismo de accountability educacional al desarrollo de procesos de mejoramiento escolar. Para ello, se realizó una revisión de estudios de implementación de políticas educativas que incorporan accountability, preguntándose qué elementos de éste favorecen o difi cultan el mejoramiento escolar, enfatizando la relación de estos hallazgos con los contextos en que se han aplicado estas políticas. Al fi nal del trabajo, se incluye una discusión de los resultados de la revisión y proyecciones para el análisis de este fenómeno en América Latina. This work is intended to propel forward the current discussion regarding the contribution of the educational accountability mechanism to the development of school improvement processes. A literature review of a set of implementation studies of educational policies that incorporate educational accountability was conducted to discover what elements of this mechanism help or hinder educational improvement in the specifi c contexts in which they are applied. A discussion of the results of this review and projections for Latin America are presented at the end of the paper.

    Este estudio, realizado por la Agencia de Calidad de la Educación, tuvo como objetivo conocer y analizar las prácticas de los establecimientos educacionales de enseñanza media que han experimentado trayectorias de mejora y deterioro educativo sostenido en Chile. Se condujo un estudio cualitativo de dieciséis casos (11 de mejora y 5 de deterioro), del que pudo identificarse diferencias entre ambos tipos de establecimientos, a nivel de factores que condicionan su funcionamiento, de la gestión institucional y el diseño de los procesos de enseñanza. Posteriormente, se elaboraron tipologías de mejoramiento y deterioro, teniendo como eje el grado de institucionalización y validación de los procesos de mejora en las institucionesThis study, carried out by the Agency for the Quality of Education, aimed to know and analyze the practices of educational establishments that have experienced trajectories of improvement and sustained educational deterioration in Chile. A qualitative study of sixteen cases was conducted (11 improvement and 5 deterioration), in which it was identified that there were differences between both types of establishments, at the level of factors that condition their functioning, institutional management and the design of the teaching processes.     The tyrosine kinase FER is responsible for the capacitation-associated increase in tyrosine phosphorylation in murine sperm

    Sperm capacitation is required for fertilization. At the molecular level, this process is associated with fast activation of protein kinase A. Downstream of this event, capacitating conditions lead to an increase in tyrosine phosphorylation. The identity of the tyrosine kinase(s) mediating this process has not been conclusively demonstrated. Recent experiments using stallion and human sperm have suggested a role for PYK2 based on the use of small molecule inhibitors directed against this kinase. However, crucially, loss-of-function experiments have not been reported. Here, we used both pharmacological inhibitors and genetically modified mice models to investigate the identity of the tyrosine kinase(s) mediating the increase in tyrosine phosphorylation in mouse sperm. Similar to stallion and human, PF431396 blocks the capacitation-associated increase in tyrosine phosphorylation. Yet, sperm from Pyk2(-/-) mice displayed a normal increase in tyrosine phosphorylation, implying that PYK2 is not responsible for this phosphorylation process. Here, we show that PF431396 can also inhibit FER, a tyrosine kinase known to be present in sperm. Sperm from mice targeted with a kinase-inactivating mutation in Fer failed to undergo capacitation-associated increases in tyrosine phosphorylation. Although these mice are fertile, their sperm displayed a reduced ability to fertilize metaphase II-arrested eggs in vitro.Fil: Alvau, Antonio.     The stellar occultations by the largest satellite of the dwarf planet Haumea, Hi'iaka

    Two stellar occultations by the largest satellite of the dwarf planet Haumea, Hi'iaka, were predicted to happen on April, 6th and 16th, 2021. Additional high accuracy astrometric analysis was carried out in order to refine the prediction for April 6th, using several telescopes in the 1.2-m to 2-m range, with the final shadow path crossing North Africa. We successfully detected the first event from TRAPPIST-North telescope at Oukaïmeden Observatory (Morocco). Although it was recorded from only one site, this first detection allowed us to improve the prediction for the second that crossed North America from East to West. We had a good success recording six positive detections and several negative detections that constrain the shape and size of the body. The light curves obtained from the different observatories provide the time at which the star disappears and reappears, which are translated into chords (the projected lines on the sky-plane as observed from each location). Additionally, we carried out a campaign to study Hi'iaka's rotational light-curve, studying the residuals of Haumea's rotational light-curve to a four-order Fourier fit. We obtained the rotational phases at the times of the occultations, which is critical for the analysis of the occultations, given that Hi'iaka is clearly non-spherical. Our preliminary results show that Hi'iaka indeed has a triaxial shape with a larger effective diameter than what has been published so far. The preliminary results and their implications will be discussed in this talk

    Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.     Evolving trends in the management of acute appendicitis during COVID-19 waves. The ACIE appy II study

    Background: In 2020, ACIE Appy study showed that COVID-19 pandemic heavily affected the management of patients with acute appendicitis (AA) worldwide, with an increased rate of non-operative management (NOM) strategies and a trend toward open surgery due to concern of virus transmission by laparoscopy and controversial recommendations on this issue. The aim of this study was to survey again the same group of surgeons to assess if any difference in management attitudes of AA had occurred in the later stages of the outbreak. Methods: From August 15 to September 30, 2021, an online questionnaire was sent to all 709 participants of the ACIE Appy study. The questionnaire included questions on personal protective equipment (PPE), local policies and screening for SARS-CoV-2 infection, NOM, surgical approach and disease presentations in 2021. The results were compared with the results from the previous study. Results: A total of 476 answers were collected (response rate 67.1%). Screening policies were significatively improved with most patients screened regardless of symptoms (89.5% vs. 37.4%) with PCR and antigenic test as the preferred test (74.1% vs. 26.3%). More patients tested positive before surgery and commercial systems were the preferred ones to filter smoke plumes during laparoscopy. Laparoscopic appendicectomy was the first option in the treatment of AA, with a declined use of NOM. Conclusion: Management of AA has improved in the last waves of pandemic. Increased evidence regarding SARS-COV-2 infection along with a timely healthcare systems response has been translated into tailored attitudes and a better care for patients with AA worldwide
