    Mechanism of periodic height variations along self-aligned VLS-grown planar nanostructures

    In this study we report in-plane nanotracks produced by molecular-beam-epitaxy (MBE) exhibiting lateral self-assembly and unusual periodic and out-of-phase height variations across their growth axes. The nanotracks are synthesized using bismuth segregation on the GaAsBi epitaxial surface, which results in metallic liquid droplets capable of catalyzing GaAsBi nanotrack growth via the vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) mechanism. A detailed examination of the nanotrack morphologies is carried out employing a combination of scanning electron and atomic force microscopy and, based on the findings, a geometric model of nanotrack growth during MBE is developed. Our results indicate diffusion and shadowing effects play significant roles in defining the interesting nanotrack shape. The unique periodicity of our lateral nanotracks originates from a rotating nucleation “hot spot” at the edge of the liquid–solid interface, a feature caused by the relative periodic circling of the non-normal ion beam flux incident on the sample surface, inside the MBE chamber. We point out that such a concept is divergent from current models of crawling mode growth kinetics and conclude that these effects may be utilized in the design and assembly of planar nanostructures with controlled non-monotonous structure

    Understanding the roles of gingival beta-defensins

    Gingival epithelium produces β-defensins, small cationic peptides, as part of its contribution to the innate host defense against the bacterial challenge that is constantly present in the oral cavity. Besides their functions in healthy gingival tissues, β-defensins are involved in the initiation and progression, as well as restriction of periodontal tissue destruction, by acting as antimicrobial, chemotactic, and anti-inflammatory agents. In this article, we review the common knowledge about β-defensins, coming from in vivo and in vitro monolayer studies, and present new aspects, based on the experience on three-dimensional organotypic culture models, to the important role of gingival β-defensins in homeostasis of the periodontium

    Searches for new physics using the t(t)over-bar invariant mass distribution in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV

    This is the pre-print version of the final published paper that is available from the link belowSearches for anomalous top quark-antiquark production are presented, based on pp collisions at √s=8  TeV . The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19:7 fb^-1, were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The observed tt invariant mass spectrum is found to be compatible with the standard model prediction. Limits on the production cross section times branching fraction probe, for the first time, a region of parameter space for certain models of new physics not yet constrained by precision measurements

    Central nervous system involvement in gestational trophoblastic neoplasia

    WOS: 000169248200018PubMed ID: 11446484Objective: To evaluate characteristics of patients with central nervous system (CNS) lesions of gestational trophoblastic disease and determine prognostic and therapeutic implications applicable to management. Methods: Nine patients among 56 cases of malignant gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) were analyzed prospectively in a single institution between the years 1990 and 1997 with at least two years of follow-up. Brain metastases were documented by physical exam and computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging. In terms of therapy, all of the patients received an etoposide. methotraxate, actinomycin, cyclosphamide and vincristine (EMA-CO) regimen for 5 to 9 courses. To prevent unexpected intracranial hemorrhage, all patients received radiation therapy. No intrathecal chemotherapy was given. Remission was defined as three weekly beta-hCG levels below assay sensitivity (<5 mIU/ml). Results: The mean age of the patients at diagnosis was 29.6 years. While two of the patients initially presented with symptoms related to cranial involvement, five were diagnosed during routine investigation for metastasis in malignant GTD and the remaining two developed cerebral metastases during the therapy. Besides central nervous system involvement, six had additional lung, two had hepatic and splenic and one had pelvic metastases. Overall survival was 66.6%. Two patients had a fulminant clinical course and were lost one month after initial diagnosis. Conclusion: Early diagnosis via computed tomography of the head and beta-hCG serum testing along with aggressive, multiagent intervention (EMA-CO) have greatly improved patient prognosis of this once highly fatal condition
