Captured while serving as officers at the battle of Tescua, the accused claimed they had been forced to serve in the rebel army. This excuse was ignored and 21 of the defendants were sentenced to death, only to be spared by decrees of indulto in the following months. This article examines the logic behind such judicial reckoning, the narrative strategies employed by the accused in their defense, and the meaning of clemency in the early republic
Bispectrum speckle interferometry of the massive protostellar outflow source IRAS 23151+5912
We present bispectrum speckle interferometry of the massive protostellar
object IRAS 23151+5912 in the near-infrared K' band. The reconstructed image
shows the diffuse nebulosity north-east of two point-like sources in
unprecedented detail. The comparison of our near-infrared image with mm
continuum and CO molecular line maps shows that the brighter of the two point
sources lies near the center of the mm peak, indicating that it is a high-mass
protostar. The nebulosity coincides with the blue-shifted molecular outflow
component. The most prominent feature in the nebulosity is a bow-shock-like
arc. We assume that this feature is associated with a precessing jet which has
created an inward-pointed cone in the swept-up material. We present numerical
jet simulations that reproduce this and several other features observed in our
speckle image of the nebulosity. Our data also reveal a linear structure
connecting the central point source to the extended diffuse nebulosity. This
feature may represent the innermost part of a jet that drives the strong
molecular outflow (PA ~80 degr) from IRAS 23151+5912. With the aid of radiative
transfer calculations, we demonstrate that, in general, the observed inner
structures of the circumstellar material surrounding high-mass stars are
strongly influenced by the orientation and symmetry of the bipolar cavity.Comment: accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics; preprints with high-resolution

A User-Friendly Hybrid Sparse Matrix Class in C++
When implementing functionality which requires sparse matrices, there are
numerous storage formats to choose from, each with advantages and
disadvantages. To achieve good performance, several formats may need to be used
in one program, requiring explicit selection and conversion between the
formats. This can be both tedious and error-prone, especially for non-expert
users. Motivated by this issue, we present a user-friendly sparse matrix class
for the C++ language, with a high-level application programming interface
deliberately similar to the widely used MATLAB language. The class internally
uses two main approaches to achieve efficient execution: (i) a hybrid storage
framework, which automatically and seamlessly switches between three underlying
storage formats (compressed sparse column, coordinate list, Red-Black tree)
depending on which format is best suited for specific operations, and (ii)
template-based meta-programming to automatically detect and optimise execution
of common expression patterns. To facilitate relatively quick conversion of
research code into production environments, the class and its associated
functions provide a suite of essential sparse linear algebra functionality
(eg., arithmetic operations, submatrix manipulation) as well as high-level
functions for sparse eigendecompositions and linear equation solvers. The
latter are achieved by providing easy-to-use abstractions of the low-level
ARPACK and SuperLU libraries. The source code is open and provided under the
permissive Apache 2.0 license, allowing unencumbered use in commercial
products
Outflows from the high-mass protostars NGC 7538 IRS1/2 observed with bispectrum speckle interferometry -- Signatures of flow precession
NGC 7538 IRS1 is a high-mass (approx. 30 M_sun) protostar with a CO outflow,
an associated UCHII region, and a linear methanol maser structure, which might
trace a Keplerian-rotating circumstellar disk. The directions of the various
associated axes are misaligned with each other. We investigate the
near-infrared morphology of the source to clarify the relations among the
various axes. K'-band bispectrum speckle interferometry was performed at two
6-meter-class telescopes -- the BTA 6m telescope and the 6.5m MMT.
Complementary IRAC images from the Spitzer Space Telescope Archive were used to
relate the structures detected with the outflow at larger scales. High-dynamic
range images show fan-shaped outflow structure in which we detect 18 stars and
several blobs of diffuse emission. We interpret the misalignment of various
outflow axes in the context of a disk precession model, including numerical
hydrodynamic simulations of the molecular emission. The precession period is
approx. 280 years and its half-opening angle is 40 degrees. A possible
triggering mechanism is non-coplanar tidal interaction of an (undiscovered)
close companion with the circumbinary protostellar disk. Our observations
resolve the nearby massive protostar NGC 7538 IRS2 as a close binary with
separation of 195 mas. We find indications for shock interaction between the
outflow activities in IRS1 and IRS2. Indications of outflow precession have
been discovered to date in a number of massive protostars, all with large
precession angles 20--45 degrees. This might explain the difference between the
outflow widths in low- and high-mass stars and add support to a common

Simvastatin improves the sexual health-related quality of life in men aged 40 years and over with erectile dysfunction : Additional data from the Erectile Dysfunction and Statin trial

The aims of this study were:a)To evaluate the internal reliability of the male erectile dysfunction specific quality of life (MED-QoL) scale and explore its factor structure.b)To evaluate the effect of simvastatin on subscales of the MED-QoL in men over forty years with erectile dysfunction. Methods: This is a double blind randomised controlled trial of 40 mg simvastatin or placebo given once daily for six months to men over forty years with untreated erectile dysfunction, who were not at high cardiovascular risk and were not on anti-hypertensive or lipid-lowering medication. 173 eligible men were recruited from 10 general practices in East of England. Data were collected at two points over 30 weeks. We report on the factor structure of MED-QoL, the internal reliability of the scale and the derived subscales, and the effect of simvastatin on MED-QoL subscales. Results: An initial analysis of the MED-QoL items suggested that a number of items should be removed (MED-QoL-R). Exploratory factor analysis identified three subscales within the MED-QoL-R which accounted for 96% of the variance, related to feelings of Control, initiating Intimacy, and Emotional response to erectile dysfunction. The alpha value for the revised scale (MED-Qol-R) was >0.95 and exceeded .82 for each subscale. Regression analysis showed that patients in the placebo group experienced a significantly reduced feeling of Control over erectile dysfunction than those in the statin group. Those in the placebo group had significantly lower Emotional response than those in the statin group at the close of trial, but there was no significant treatment effect on Intimacy. Conclusions: Our revised MED-QoL-R identified three subscales. Secondary analysis showed a significant improvement in sexual health related quality of life, specifically in relation to perception of control and emotional health in men with untreated erectile dysfunction given 40 mg simvastatin for six months. Planck Oscillators in the Background Dark Energy
We consider a model for an underpinning of the universe: there are
oscillators at the Planck scale in the background dark energy. Starting from a
coherent array of such oscillators it is possible to get a description from
elementary particles to Black Holes including the usual Hawking-Beckenstein
theory. There is also a description of Gravitation in the above model which

Uniformizing the Stacks of Abelian Sheaves
Elliptic sheaves (which are related to Drinfeld modules) were introduced by
Drinfeld and further studied by Laumon--Rapoport--Stuhler and others. They can
be viewed as function field analogues of elliptic curves and hence are objects
"of dimension 1". Their higher dimensional generalisations are called abelian
sheaves. In the analogy between function fields and number fields, abelian
sheaves are counterparts of abelian varieties. In this article we study the
moduli spaces of abelian sheaves and prove that they are algebraic stacks. We
further transfer results of Cerednik--Drinfeld and Rapoport--Zink on the
uniformization of Shimura varieties to the setting of abelian sheaves. Actually
the analogy of the Cerednik--Drinfeld uniformization is nothing but the
uniformization of the moduli schemes of Drinfeld modules by the Drinfeld upper
half space. Our results generalise this uniformization. The proof closely
follows the ideas of Rapoport--Zink. In particular, analogies of -divisible
groups play an important role. As a crucial intermediate step we prove that in
a family of abelian sheaves with good reduction at infinity, the set of points
where the abelian sheaf is uniformizable in the sense of Anderson, is formally

On the energy of charged black holes in generalized dilaton-axion gravity
In this paper we calculate the energy distribution of some charged black
holes in generalized dilaton-axion gravity. The solutions correspond to charged
black holes arising in a Kalb-Ramond-dilaton background and some existing
non-rotating black hole solutions are recovered in special cases. We focus our
study to asymptotically flat and asymptotically non-flat types of solutions and
resort for this purpose to the M{\o}ller prescription. Various aspects of

Cerebellar Integrity in the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis - Frontotemporal Dementia Continuum
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) are multisystem neurodegenerative disorders that manifest overlapping cognitive, neuropsychiatric and motor features. The cerebellum has long been known to be crucial for intact motor function although emerging evidence over the past decade has attributed cognitive and neuropsychiatric processes to this structure. The current study set out i) to establish the integrity of cerebellar subregions in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia spectrum (ALS-bvFTD) and ii) determine whether specific cerebellar atrophy regions are associated with cognitive, neuropsychiatric and motor symptoms in the patients. Seventy-eight patients diagnosed with ALS, ALS-bvFTD, behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), most without C9ORF72 gene abnormalities, and healthy controls were investigated. Participants underwent cognitive, neuropsychiatric and functional evaluation as well as structural imaging using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to examine the grey matter subregions of the cerebellar lobules, vermis and crus. VBM analyses revealed: i) significant grey matter atrophy in the cerebellum across the whole ALS-bvFTD continuum; ii) atrophy predominantly of the superior cerebellum and crus in bvFTD patients, atrophy of the inferior cerebellum and vermis in ALS patients, while ALS-bvFTD patients had both patterns of atrophy. Post-hoc covariance analyses revealed that cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms were particularly associated with atrophy of the crus and superior lobule, while motor symptoms were more associated with atrophy of the inferior lobules. Taken together, these findings indicate an important role of the cerebellum in the ALS-bvFTD disease spectrum, with all three clinical phenotypes demonstrating specific patterns of subregional atrophy that associated with different symptomology
The XMM-SSC survey of hard-spectrum XMM-Newton sources 1: optically bright sources
We present optical and X-ray data for a sample of serendipitous XMM-Newton
sources that are selected to have 0.5-2 keV vs 2-4.5 keV X-ray hardness ratios
which are harder than the X-ray background. The sources have 2-4.5 keV X-ray
flux >= 10^-14 cgs, and in this paper we examine a subsample of 42 optically
bright (r < 21) sources; this subsample is 100 per cent spectroscopically
identified. All but one of the optical counterparts are extragalactic, and we
argue that the single exception, a Galactic M star, is probably a coincidental
association. The X-ray spectra are consistent with heavily absorbed power laws
(21.8 < log NH < 23.4), and all of them appear to be absorbed AGN. The majority
of the sources show only narrow emission lines in their optical spectra,
implying that they are type-2 AGN. Only a small fraction of the sources (7/42)
show broad optical emission lines, and all of these have NH < 10^23 cm^-2. This
implies that ratios of X-ray absorption to optical/UV extinction equivalent to
> 100 times the Galactic gas-to-dust ratio are rare in AGN absorbers (at most a
few percent of the population), and may be restricted to broad absorption-line
QSOs. Seven objects appear to have an additional soft X-ray component in
addition to the heavily absorbed power law. We consider the implications of our
results in the light of the AGN unified scheme. We find that the soft
components in narrow-line objects are consistent with the unified scheme
provided that > 4 per cent of broad-line AGN have ionised absorbers that
attenuate their soft X-ray flux by >50 per cent. In at least one of the X-ray
absorbed, broad-line AGN in our sample the X-ray spectrum requires an ionised
absorber, consistent with this picture.Comment: accepted for publication in MNRA
