    Study on Palmaris Longus Muscle Tendon Agenesis Among First Year Filipino Medical Students

    Introduction: In the recent years palmaris longus muscle tendon (PLMT) has become an extensively and intensively studied muscle all over the world. The main reason for this is the importance of PLMT which was recognized with development of plastic and reconstructive surgery. The possibilities of PLMT use has become bigger and bigger each day Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate the incidence of agenesis of palmaris longus muscle tendon among first year Filipino medical students at OLFU. Methods: This study was conducted at the Our Lady of Fatima University Medical Centre, Valenzuela City, Philippines. A semi-structured proforma was used to record the relevant data for the study. The Thompson’s test was used for assessing palmaris longus muscle tendon. After taking consent total of 503 first year Filipino medical students were involved. Results: Out of total 503 subjects, 170 (33.80%) were males and 333 (66.20%) were females. Percentage of frequency of agenesis of palmaris longus muscle tendon in both genders was 17.05%. There was no significant gender and laterality difference in the incidence of the agenesis of palmaris longus muscle tendon. That means there are equal chances of palmaris longus muscle tendon agenesis in both gender and the laterality. Conclusions: There was no significant gender and laterality difference in the incidence of the agenesis of PLMT.     Estimation of ventricles size of human brain by Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Nepalese Population: A retrospective study

    Background and Objective: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides image acquisition of three-dimensional data and measurement in any chosen imaging plane. Objective of this study is to assess the size of ventricles of the brain of normal Nepalese people and establish the range of size of the ventricular system and compute the ventricular dimensions among different age and gender. Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional retrospective study done at Gandaki Medical College, Pokhara. A total of 106 MRI scan data of healthy individuals were collected over a period of seven months between March to September 2019. Patients ranged between eight and eighty years of age with 58 males and 48 females. Measurements of the mean of bifrontal diameter (BFD), bihemispheric diameter (BHD), third ventricle transverse dimension (TVTD), fourth ventricle antero-posterior dimension (FVAP), fourth ventricle width (FVW), and frontal horn ratio (FHR) were done. Result: The mean of BFD, BHD, TVTD, FVAP, FVW, and FHR were found to be 3.05 ± 0.10 cm, 10.11 ± 0.40 cm, 0.43 ± 0.11 cm, 0.90 ± 0.11 cm, 1.22 ± 0.12 cm, and 0.30 ± 0.01 cm, respectively. The mean width of fourth ventricle in males and females was observed to be 1.23 ± 0.12 cm and 1.19 ± 0.11 cm respectively. There was a significant correlation of TVTD, FVAP, FHR and BFD with age with Pearson correlation coefficient 0.393 (P value <0.01), 0.259 (P value <0.01), 0.34 (P value <0.01), and 0.219 (P value <0.05) respectively. However, BHD and FVW have no correlation with age. Conclusion: Third Ventricle Traverse Dimension, FVP, FVW and FHR show almost similar or slight difference in measurement according to gender. However, BFD shows larger difference in measurement according to gender. Similarly there is no such significant difference according to age in measurement of BFD, BHD, FVAP, FVW and FHR, while TVTD measurement shows slight increased measurement according to age

    Giant Sacrococcygeal Teratoma in a Neonate: A Case Report

    Sacrococcygeal teratomas are common tumours in neonates and infants, primarily affecting females. A 35-year-old primigravida presented with a large sacrococcygeal teratoma that was detected during the 30th week of gestation in the fetus. The baby was delivered via elective caesarean section at 36+3 weeks, and surgical excision of the 10x10x5 cm3 mass was performed successfully on the third day of life. Despite a surgical site infection, the patient had a favourable outcome with normal vital signs, bowel, bladder, and lower extremity functions upon discharge. Early diagnosis and prompt management of sacrococcygeal teratoma in newborns is vital for optimal outcomes, providing valuable insights and guidance to medical practitioners

    National identity predicts public health support during a global pandemic

    Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = −0.40).     Clinical Mortality Review of COVID-19 Patients at Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, Nepal; A Retrospective Study

    Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has challenged the health system worldwide, including the low and middle income countries like Nepal. In view of the rising number of infections and prediction of multiple waves of this disease, mortalities due to COVID-19 need to be critically analyzed so that every possible effort could be made to prevent COVID-19 related mortalities in future. Main aim of this research was to study about the mortalities due to COVID-19 at a tertiary level hospital, in Nepal. This was a retrospective, observational study that included all inpatients from Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, who were reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction positive for SARS-COV-2 and died during hospital stay from January 2020 till January 2021. Medical records of the patients were evaluated. Out of 860 total admissions in a year, there were 50 mortalities in the study center. Out of 50 mortalities, majority were males (76%) with male to female ratio of 3.17:1. Most were above 65 years of age (72%) and had two or more comorbidities (64%). The most common comorbidities among the patients who had died during hospital stay were hypertension (58%) followed by diabetes mellitus (50%) and chronic obstructive airway disease (24%). The median duration from the symptom onset to death was 18 days, ranged from the minimum of 2 days till maximum of 39 days. D-dimer was found to be &gt;1 mg/L in 58% cases and ferritin was &gt;500 ng/ml in 42% patients at presentation. A total of 42% patients had thrombocytopenia, 80% patients had lymphocytopenia and 60% had Neutrophil to Lymphocyte ratio &gt;11.75 with the mean NLR of 18.38. Of total mortalities, 16% patients also showed microbiological evidence of secondary infection; Male gender, age more than 65 years, multiple comorbidities with lymphocytopenia, elevated Neutrophil lymphocyte ratio and elevated inflammatory markers were risk factors found in majority of mortalities in our study. These findings could be utilized for early triage and risk assessment in COVID-19 patients so that aggressive treatment strategies could be employed at the earliest to reduce mortalities due to COVID-19 in future
