Where science starts: Spontaneous experiments in preschoolers’ exploratory play
Probabilistic models of expected information gain require integrating prior knowledge about causal hypotheses with knowledge about possible actions that might generate data relevant to those hypotheses. Here we looked at whether preschoolers (mean: 54 months) recognize “action possibilities” (affordances) in the environment that allow them to isolate variables when there is information to be gained. By manipulating the physical properties of the stimuli, we were able to affect the degree to which candidate variables could be isolated; by manipulating the base rate of candidate causes, we were able to affect the potential for information gain. Controlling Magnonic Spin Current through Magnetic Anisotropy and Gilbert Damping
The magnon propagation length, (MPL) of a ferro/ferrimagnet (FM) is one of
the key factors that controls the generation and propagation of
thermally-driven spin current in FM/heavy metal (HM) bilayer based
spincaloritronic devices. Theory predicts that for the FM layer, MPL is
inversely proportional to the Gilbert damping (alpha) and the square root of
the effective magnetic anisotropy constant (K_eff). However, direct
experimental evidence of this relationship is lacking. To experimentally
confirm this prediction, we employ a combination of longitudinal spin Seebeck
effect (LSSE), transverse susceptibility, and ferromagnetic resonance
experiments to investigate the temperature evolution of MPL and establish its
correlation with the effective magnetic anisotropy field, H_K^eff (proportional
to K_eff) and alpha in Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG)/Pt bilayers. We observe concurrent
drops in the LSSE voltage and MPL below 200 K in TmIG/Pt bilayers regardless of
TmIG film thickness and substrate choice and attribute it to the noticeable
increases in H_K^eff and alpha that occur within the same temperature range.
This study not only highlights the ability to manipulate MPL by controlling
H_K^eff and alpha in FM/HM based spincaloritronic nanodevices, but also shows
that the tuning of alpha is more effective than H_K^eff in controlling MPL and,
hence, the spincaloritronic efficiency.Comment: 5 main text figure
A review of the use of covariates in cluster randomized trials uncovers marked discrepancies between guidance and practice
Objectives: Reviews of the handling of covariates in trials have explicitly excluded cluster randomized trials (CRTs). In this study, we review the use of covariates in randomization, the reporting of covariates, and adjusted analyses in CRTs. Study Design and Setting: We reviewed a random sample of 300 CRTs published between 2000 and 2008 across 150 English language journals. Results: Fifty-eight percent of trials used covariates in randomization. Only 69 (23%) included tables of cluster- and individual-level covariates. Fifty-eight percent reported significance tests of baseline balance. Of 207 trials that reported baseline measures of the primary outcome, 155 (75%) subsequently adjusted for these in analyses. Of 174 trials that used covariates in randomization, 30 (17%) included an analysis adjusting for all those covariates. Of 219 trial reports that included an adjusted analysis of the primary outcome, only 71 (32%) reported that covariates were chosen a priori. Conclusion: There are some marked discrepancies between practice and guidance on the use of covariates in the design, analysis, and reporting of CRTs. It is essential that researchers follow guidelines on the use and reporting of covariates in CRTs, promoting the validity of trial conclusions and quality of trial reports
Importance of interfaces in hybrid perovskite solar cells
Photovoltaic devices based on hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite absorbers have reached outstanding performance over the past few years, surpassing power conversion efficiency of over 22%. In this talk we discuss the role of the interface in optimizing device performance as measured by both power conversion efficiency and stability. We present an examination of different perovskite active layers and interfacial electronic structure of these remarkable materials with functional oxide and organic contact layers. Interface formation of the active layer with different carrier transport materials has direct implications for performance of the resulting devices. We present interface studies, which permit identification of charge transfer mechanisms across the interface with chemical specificity and insight into the requirements for realizing high performance devices. Our findings from surface science approaches are combined with time resolved spectroscopy, structural studies and device level studies to validate impacts on carrier dynamics and demonstrate their technological relevance of interfacial insights
The Pattern of Polymorphism in Arabidopsis thaliana
We resequenced 876 short fragments in a sample of 96 individuals of Arabidopsis thaliana that included stock center accessions as well as a hierarchical sample from natural populations. Although A. thaliana is a selfing weed, the pattern of polymorphism in general agrees with what is expected for a widely distributed, sexually reproducing species. Linkage disequilibrium decays rapidly, within 50 kb. Variation is shared worldwide, although population structure and isolation by distance are evident. The data fail to fit standard neutral models in several ways. There is a genome-wide excess of rare alleles, at least partially due to selection. There is too much variation between genomic regions in the level of polymorphism. The local level of polymorphism is negatively correlated with gene density and positively correlated with segmental duplications. Because the data do not fit theoretical null distributions, attempts to infer natural selection from polymorphism data will require genome-wide surveys of polymorphism in order to identify anomalous regions. Despite this, our data support the utility of A. thaliana as a model for evolutionary functional genomics
Antibiotic strategies for eradicating Pseudomonas aeruginosa in people with cystic fibrosis
Background: Respiratory tract infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa occurs inmost people with cystic fibrosis. Once chronic infection is established, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is virtually impossible to eradicate and is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Early infection may be easier to eradicate.
This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2003, and previously updated in 2006 and 2009.
Objectives: To determine whether antibiotic treatment of early Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in children and adults with cystic fibrosis eradicates the organism, delays the onset of chronic infection, and results in clinical improvement. To evaluate whether there is evidence that a particular antibiotic strategy is superior to or more cost-effective than other strategies and to compare the adverse effects of different antibiotic strategies (including respiratory infection with other micro-organisms).
Search methods: We searched the Cochrane Cystic Fibrosis and Genetic Disorders Group Trials Register comprising references identified from comprehensive electronic database searches and handsearches of relevant journals and abstract books of conference proceedings.

Selection criteria: We included randomised controlled trials of people with cystic fibrosis, in whom Pseudomonas aeruginosa had recently been isolated from respiratory secretions. We compared combinations of inhaled, oral or intravenous antibiotics with placebo, usual treatment or other combinations of inhaled, oral or intravenous antibiotics. We excluded non-randomised trials, cross-over trials, and those utilising historical controls.
Data collection and analysis: Both authors independently selected trials, assessed risk of bias and extracted data.
Main results: The search identified 49 trials; seven trials (744 participants) with a duration between 28 days and 27 months were eligible for inclusion.
Three of the trials are over 10 years old and their results may be less applicable today given the changes in standard treatment. Some of the trials had low numbers of participants and most had relatively short follow-up periods; however, there was generally a low risk of bias from missing data. In most trials it was difficult to blind participants and clinicians to treatment given the interventions and comparators used. Two trials were supported by the manufacturers of the antibiotic used.
Evidence from two trials (38 participants) at the two-month time-point showed treatment of early Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection with inhaled tobramycin results in microbiological eradication of the organism from respiratory secretions more often than placebo, odds ratio 0.15 (95% confidence interval 0.03 to 0.65) and data from one of these trials, with longer follow up, suggested that this effect may persist for up to 12 months.
One randomised controlled trial (26 participants) compared oral ciprofloxacin and nebulised colistin versus usual treatment. Results after two years suggested treatment of early infection results in microbiological eradication of Pseudomonas aeruginosa more often than no anti-pseudomonal treatment, odds ratio 0.12 (95% confidence interval 0.02 to 0.79).
One trial comparing 28 days to 56 days treatment with nebulised tobramycin solution for inhalation in 88 participants showed that both treatments were effective and well-tolerated, with no notable additional improvement with longer over shorter duration of therapy. However, this trial was not powered to detect non- inferiority or equivalence.
A trial of oral ciprofloxacin with inhaled colistin versus nebulised tobramycin solution for inhalation alone (223 participants) failed to show a difference between the two strategies, although it was underpowered to show this. A further trial of inhaled colistin with oral ciprofloxacin versus nebulised tobramycin solution for inhalation with oral ciprofloxacin also showed no superiority of the former, with increased isolation of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia in both groups.
A recent, large trial in 306 children aged between one and 12 years compared cycled nebulised tobramycin solution for inhalation to culture-based therapy and also ciprofloxacin to placebo. The primary analysis showed no difference in time to pulmonary exacerbation or proportion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa positive cultures. An analysis performed in this review (not adjusted for age) showed fewer participants in the cycled therapy group with one or more isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, odds ratio 0.51 (95% CI 0.31 to 0.28).
Authors’ conclusions: We found that nebulised antibiotics, alone or in combination with oral antibiotics, were better than no treatment for early infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Eradication may be sustained for up to two years. There is insufficient evidence to determine whether antibiotic strategies for the eradication of early Pseudomonas aeruginosa decrease mortality or morbidity, improve quality of life, or are associated with adverse effects compared to placebo or standard treatment. Four trials of two active treatments have failed to show differences in rates of eradication of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. There have been no published randomised controlled trials that investigate the efficacy of intravenous antibiotics to eradicate Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis. Overall, there is still insufficient evidence from this review to state which antibiotic strategy should be used for the eradication of early Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in cystic fibrosis

The effectiveness of e-& mHealth interventions to promote physical activity and healthy diets in developing countries: a systematic review
Background: Promoting physical activity and healthy eating is important to combat the unprecedented rise in NCDs in many developing countries. Using modern information-and communication technologies to deliver physical activity and diet interventions is particularly promising considering the increased proliferation of such technologies in many developing countries. The objective of this systematic review is to investigate the effectiveness of e-& mHealth interventions to promote physical activity and healthy diets in developing countries.Methods: Major databases and grey literature sources were searched to retrieve studies that quantitatively examined the effectiveness of e-& mHealth interventions on physical activity and diet outcomes in developing countries. Additional studies were retrieved through citation alerts and scientific social media allowing study inclusion until August 2016. The CONSORT checklist was used to assess the risk of bias of the included studies.Results: A total of 15 studies conducted in 13 developing countries in Europe, Africa, Latin-and South America and Asia were included in the review. The majority of studies enrolled adults who were healthy or at risk of diabetes or hypertension. The average intervention length was 6.4 months, and text messages and the Internet were the most frequently used intervention delivery channels. Risk of bias across the studies was moderate (55.7 % of the criteria fulfilled). Eleven studies reported significant positive effects of an e-& mHealth intervention on physical activity and/or diet behaviour. Respectively, 50 % and 70 % of the interventions were effective in promoting physical activity and healthy diets.Conclusions: The majority of studies demonstrated that e-& mHealth interventions were effective in promoting physical activity and healthy diets in developing countries. Future interventions should use more rigorous study designs, investigate the cost-effectiveness and reach of interventions, and focus on emerging technologies, such as smart phone apps and wearable activity trackers.Trial registration: The review protocol can be retrieved from the PROSPERO database (Registration ID: CRD42015029240)
Cascading Crises: Society in the Age of COVID-19
The tsunami of change triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed society in a series of cascading crises. Unlike disasters that are more temporarily and spatially bounded, the pandemic has continued to expand across time and space for over a year, leaving an unusually broad range of second-order and third-order harms in its wake. Globally, the unusual conditions of the pandemic—unlike other crises—have impacted almost every facet of our lives. The pandemic has deepened existing inequalities and created new vulnerabilities related to social isolation, incarceration, involuntary exclusion from the labor market, diminished economic opportunity, life-and-death risk in the workplace, and a host of emergent digital, emotional, and economic divides. In tandem, many less advantaged individuals and groups have suffered disproportionate hardship related to the pandemic in the form of fear and anxiety, exposure to misinformation, and the effects of the politicization of the crisis. Many of these phenomena will have a long tail that we are only beginning to understand. Nonetheless, the research also offers evidence of resilience on several fronts including nimble organizational response, emergent communication practices, spontaneous solidarity, and the power of hope. While we do not know what the post COVID-19 world will look like, the scholarship here tells us that the virus has not exhausted society’s adaptive potential
