Surfactant function in neonates with respiratory distress syndrome

    Get PDF
The function of pulmonary surfactant of a group of 14 preterm neonates (birth weight 907 +/- 60 g) who suffered from severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and who had received exogenous bovine lipid extracted surfactant on the first day of life was compared to that in a second group of 8 neonates (birth weight 940 +/- 110 g) with mild RDS who had not received surfactant treatment. Mechanical respiratory support from day 2 on was the same in both groups. The minimal surface tension (gamma(min)) improved steadily, falling from about 30 mN/m initially to less than 20 mN/m before extubation, A consistent but loose correlation was found between gamma(min) and mechanical respiratory support necessary, as quantitated by the oxygenation index. Total protein was about 0.8 +/- 0.2 mg/mg of phospholipids and did not change during the first week of life. There were no correlations between total protein and gamma(min) or the oxygenation index. The data suggest that inhibition of surfactant function by proteins leaked into the airspaces does not play a major role during recovery from RDS, Instead, endogenous remodelling of surfactant might be of greater relevance

Determinants of the international performance of services: a conceptual model

    Get PDF
Countless determinants of export success that are supposed to help managers reduce the failure rates of export ventures have been identified. Despite this abundance of studies, however, little is known about the determinants of the internationalization success of services. In this paper, based on prior studies focusing primarily on manufactured goods and the key characteristics distinguishing services from goods, a comprehensive conceptual model for the successful internationalization of services is developed. --Services,export performance, internationalization, success factors

Evolution of Authenticity: Investigating the (De)Restoration of Ancient Sculpture (De)Restorations in the 1970s

    Get PDF
This thesis focuses on the period of de-restoration of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures in the 1970s. While three distinct periods of restoration history have been well-defined by scholars (17th to 19th century, the 1970s, and modern-day), the discussion of the motivations behind the focus on purism that led to de-restoration in the 1970s are lacking in the literature. The Lansdowne Herakles and the Aegina Marbles will be used in this analysis because of their illustration of the different periods of restoration history. While both the Lansdowne Herakles and the Aegina Marbles were de-restored in the 1970s, their fate in modern time diverges. The Lansdowne Herakles was once again restored in 1996, while the Aegina Marbles remain in their de-restored state. The different periods of restoration will be further explained using dominant authenticities: aesthetic, conceptual, material and historical. The addition of historical authenticity to discussions in previous literature is a critical part of understanding the modern take on restoration history. Using the legacies of the Lansdowne Herakles and the recovered pediment figures from Aegina, this study will use parallels to English historiography to explain the focus on hard facts and strict timelines of visual history that led to the de-restoration of many ancient sculptures in the 1970s

Keynote: \u3cem\u3eZip Codes and Address Changes - Using Innovative Data Analytics to Predict and Impact Health Outcomes\u3c/em\u3e

Healthcare continues to face headwinds including increasingly sicker populations and rising costs to deliver care. Because of this there is a need innovate in the approach to caring for patients, recognizing traditional healthcare and a one size fits all approach won’t work. This talk will focus on innovative, data-driven approaches to uncovering the unique needs of patients. Specifically, leveraging advanced analytics and new sources of data reflective of non-medical factors influencing health and health outcomes

Finite Element Modeling and Design of Honeycomb Sandwich Panels for Acoustic Performance

    Get PDF
Honeycomb cellular metamaterial structures offer many distinct advantages over homogenous materials because their effective material properties depend on both their constituent material properties and their geometric cell configuration. From this, a wide range of targeted effective material properties can be achieved thus supporting forward design by tailoring the honeycomb cellular materials and properties for specific applications. One area that has not been fully explored is the set of acoustic properties of honeycomb materials and how these can offer increased design flexibility when targeting acoustic performance. Understanding these relations, the designer can effectively tune designs to perform better in specific acoustic applications. One such example is the insulation of target sound frequencies to prevent sound transmission through a panel. This work explores how certain geometric and effective structural properties of in-plane honeycomb cores in sandwich panels affect the sound transmission loss properties of the panel. The two acoustic responses of interest in this work are the general level of sound transmission loss of the panel and the location of the frequencies related to the natural frequencies that exhibit high levels of sound transmission, or low sound transmission loss. Two different studies comparing constant mass sandwich panels and constant core shear modulus sandwich panels are conducted to determine the effects of varying properties. The results of these studies are used to formalize a design method, which is then used on a test case design application

Jerusalem between Political Interests and Religious Promise

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the opening ceremony for the new US embassy in Jerusalem, which took place on 14 May 2018. By analyzing a live tran mission of the ceremony, it seeks to show how Jerusalem is constructed as a “holy city” through the ceremony and its medial representation. It thus aims to deepen our understanding of the relationship between religion and politics in the Middle East by focusing on the intersection of ritual, (sacred) space, conflict, and the media. More specifically, adopting a spatial approach to religion, drawing on this episode it looks at media rituals in the construction of holy space within the Middle East conflict
