Gene Banks, Seed Libraries, and Vegetable Sanctuaries: The Cultivation and Conservation of Heritage Vegetables in Britain, 1970–1985

Individual seed saving and exchange are considered important components of contemporary efforts to conserve crop genetic diversity, which ramify at local, regional, and global scales. Yet the very fact that the contributions of these activities to conservation need to be made explicit by seed savers and those who study them indicates that the practices of seed saving and exchange may not immediately be recognized as conservation-oriented activities. This article investigates why and how individual seed saving came to be aligned with a broader conservation agenda in Britain through an historical examination of the promotion of seed saving by the Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA) in the 1970s and 1980s. It demonstrates how several HDRA initiatives that aimed to preserve vegetable diversity also re-inscribed British gardeners' ordinary labor as conservation work. This historical study complements sociological and ethnographic studies, highlighting the role of a prominent organization in creating pathways for individuals to engage in local, national, and international conservation through seed saving. It also serves as a reminder that the connections between these activities had to be made explicit—that is, that there was (and is) work involved in connecting individual acts of seed saving to conservation outcomes at different scales

Infection-mediated priming of phagocytes protects against lethal secondary Aspergillus fumigatus challenge

    Get PDF
Phagocytes restrict the germination of Aspergillus fumigatus conidia and prevent the establishment of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in immunecompetent mice. Here we report that immunecompetent mice recovering from a primary A. fumigatus challenge are protected against a secondary lethal challenge. Using RAGÎłc knock-out mice we show that this protection is independent of T, B and NK cells. In protected mice, lung phagocytes are recruited more rapidly and are more efficient in conidial phagocytosis and killing. Protection was also associated with an enhanced expression of CXCR2 and Dectin-1 on bone marrow phagocytes. We also show that protective lung cytokine and chemokine responses are induced more rapidly and with enhanced dynamics in protected mice. Our findings support the hypothesis that following a first encounter with a non-lethal dose of A. fumigatus conidia, the innate immune system is primed and can mediate protection against a secondary lethal infection

Protocol for collaboration between the National Genebank and Community Seed Banks

    Get PDF
In recent years, national genebanks of some countries (e.g. Bhutan, Mexico, Nepal, South Africa and Uganda) have started to collaborate with community seed banks on the important task of conservation of crop (and tree) varieties. This collaboration has taken place in informal ways, in the form of participation in meetings and gatherings, seed and food fairs and through a number of joint activities, including the establishment of community seed banks and related (capacity development) activities. As far as is known, no formal agreements have been made/signed to structure, monitor and evaluate the collaboration in a more rigorous manner. Based on interactions among professionals from various countries who support community seed banks, it was decided to develop a generic collaboration protocol that could help shape the collaboration process in countries where this has not yet taken place or to solidify the process in countries where this is already happening. The protocol document includes chapters (articles) on the roles of the national genebank; the roles of community seed banks; principles of collaboration; activities that can be done together and rules and regulations for the collaboration. It benefitted from the inputs of many partners in Kenya, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe and from the long community seed bank working experience of staff of Bioversity International, now the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT

Idiopathic acute massive pulmonary embolism in childhood

WOS: 000468923000022PubMed ID: 31089032Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is an uncommon clinical condition in childhood. We hereby present a case report of a 10-year-old child who presented to the emergency department with an acute massive PE. He was transferred by ambulance to our emergency department for dyspnea and perioral cyanosis. His parents denied any previous history of illness or familial disease. Arterial blood gas analysis, electrocardiography, and clinical symptoms and signs collectively raised a suspicion of a probable PE. A contrast-enhanced pulmonary computed tomography scan revealed a massive thrombus in the distal part of the right pulmonary artery with no contrast passage into upper, middle, and lower lobar arteries. Upon ascertaining, the diagnosis of PE, intravenous saline infusion, 3 L/min oxygen through nasal route, and subcutaneous enoxaparin 0.4 cc was administered promptly. As our hospital lacked a pediatric intensive care unit and a further need for administration of pharmacological thrombolysis was anticipated, we transferred the patient to a tertiary care center. PE should always be kept in mind as a differential diagnosis in emergency departments even in pediatric patients
