    GrassPlot - a database of multi-scale plant diversity in Palaearctic grasslands

    GrassPlot is a collaborative vegetation-plot database organised by the Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG) and listed in the Global Index of Vegetation-Plot Databases (GIVD ID EU-00-003). GrassPlot collects plot records (releves) from grasslands and other open habitats of the Palaearctic biogeographic realm. It focuses on precisely delimited plots of eight standard grain sizes (0.0001; 0.001;... 1,000 m(2)) and on nested-plot series with at least four different grain sizes. The usage of GrassPlot is regulated through Bylaws that intend to balance the interests of data contributors and data users. The current version (v. 1.00) contains data for approximately 170,000 plots of different sizes and 2,800 nested-plot series. The key components are richness data and metadata. However, most included datasets also encompass compositional data. About 14,000 plots have near-complete records of terricolous bryophytes and lichens in addition to vascular plants. At present, GrassPlot contains data from 36 countries throughout the Palaearctic, spread across elevational gradients and major grassland types. GrassPlot with its multi-scale and multi-taxon focus complements the larger international vegetationplot databases, such as the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and the global database " sPlot". Its main aim is to facilitate studies on the scale-and taxon-dependency of biodiversity patterns and drivers along macroecological gradients. GrassPlot is a dynamic database and will expand through new data collection coordinated by the elected Governing Board. We invite researchers with suitable data to join GrassPlot. Researchers with project ideas addressable with GrassPlot data are welcome to submit proposals to the Governing Board

    En este artículo se presenta la definición de grupos interactivos, como una de las actuaciones de éxito propias de Comunidades de Aprendizaje pero, principalmente, su organización y funcionamiento en el Centro Educativo de Infantil y Primaria Caballero de La Rosa de Logroño (La Rioja). Además, se ilustran algunos de los testimonios de sus principales agentes, voluntariados y estudiantes, que sirven de evidencias del impacto que genera el trabajo en grupos interactivos tanto en la mejora del aprendizaje como de la convivencia.This article defines the interactive groups, such as Successful Educational Actions (SEAs) of the Schools as learning communities, mainly its organization and operation within Caballero de la Rosa, a school located in Logroño, La Rioja. Furthermore, it shows some of the testimonials from volunteers and students. All of them serve as evidence of the impact from the work within the interactive groups resulting in the improvement of learning and the relationships within the school

    Core Cross-Linked Polymeric Micelles for Specific Iron Delivery: Inducing Sterile Inflammation in Macrophages

    Iron is an essential co-factor for cellular processes. In the immune system, it can activate macrophages and represents a potential therapeutic for various diseases. To specifically deliver iron to macrophages, iron oxide nanoparticles are embedded in polymeric micelles of reactive polysarcosine-block-poly(S-ethylsulfonyl-l-cysteine). Upon surface functionalization via dihydrolipoic acid, iron oxide cores act as crosslinker themselves and undergo chemoselective disulfide bond formation with the surrounding poly(S-ethylsulfonyl-l-cysteine) block, yielding glutathione-responsive core cross-linked polymeric micelles (CCPMs). When applied to primary murine and human macrophages, these nanoparticles display preferential uptake, sustained intracellular iron release, and induce a strong inflammatory response. This response is also demonstrated in vivo when nanoparticles are intratracheally administered to wild-type C57Bl/6N mice. Most importantly, the controlled release concept to deliver iron oxide in redox-responsive CCPMs induces significantly stronger macrophage activation than any other iron source at identical iron levels (e.g., Feraheme), directing to a new class of immune therapeutics

    Alpine ecology in the Iberian Peninsula: What do we know, and what do we need to learn?

    The 11th Conference of the Spanish Association of Terrestrial Ecology, held in Pamplona, Spain, on 6-10 May 2013, included a symposium on alpine ecological research in the Iberian Peninsula. This session offered an excellent opportunity to assess the state and progress of alpine ecology in this region, identify knowledge gaps, and discuss further directions for research. Iberian alpine ecosystems are biodiversity hotspots and have traditionally contributed to sustaining rural livelihoods. Today, these ecosystems are subjected to large changes in land uses, including land abandonment, and are affected by climate change. This article reviews the current state of Iberian alpine ecology and proposes a research agenda. Alpine ecology in the Iberian Peninsula is a growing field of research. The need for larger spatial and temporal scales in research and monitoring, along with the integration of socioecological aspects, is a critical issue for understanding the major drivers of change in the alpine ecosystems of the Iberian Peninsula. The implementation of effective mitigation strategies aimed at reducing the impact of the pressing environmental and socioeconomic problems of Iberian mountain areas can only be accomplished through a multidisciplinary and integrative approach. © International Mountain Society

    Acute expression of human APOBEC3B in mice results in RNA editing and lethality

    Abstract Background RNA editing has been described as promoting genetic heterogeneity, leading to the development of multiple disorders, including cancer. The cytosine deaminase APOBEC3B is implicated in tumor evolution through DNA mutation, but whether it also functions as an RNA editing enzyme has not been studied. Results Here, we engineer a novel doxycycline-inducible mouse model of human APOBEC3B-overexpression to understand the impact of this enzyme in tissue homeostasis and address a potential role in C-to-U RNA editing. Elevated and sustained levels of APOBEC3B lead to rapid alteration of cellular fitness, major organ dysfunction, and ultimately lethality in mice. Importantly, RNA-sequencing of mouse tissues expressing high levels of APOBEC3B identifies frequent UCC-to-UUC RNA editing events that are not evident in the corresponding genomic DNA. Conclusions This work identifies, for the first time, a new deaminase-dependent function for APOBEC3B in RNA editing and presents a preclinical tool to help understand the emerging role of APOBEC3B as a driver of carcinogenesis
