Abiotic formation of O2 and O3 in high-CO2 terrestrial atmospheres
Previous research has indicated that high amounts of ozone (O3) and oxygen
(O2) may be produced abiotically in atmospheres with high concentrations of
CO2. The abiotic production of these two gases, which are also characteristic
of photosynthetic life processes, could pose a potential "false-positive" for
remote-sensing detection of life on planets around other stars.We show here
that such false positives are unlikely on any planet that possesses abundant
liquid water, as rainout of oxidized species onto a reduced planetary surface
should ensure that atmospheric H2 concentrations remain relatively high, and
that O2 and O3 remain low. Our aim is to determine the amount of O3 and O2
formed in a high CO2 atmosphere for a habitable planet without life. We use a
photochemical model that considers hydrogen (H2) escape and a detailed hydrogen
balance to calculate the O2 and O3 formed on planets with 0.2 of CO2 around the
Sun, and 0.02, 0.2 and 2 bars of CO2 around a young Sun-like star with higher
UV radiation. The concentrations obtained by the photochemical model were used
as input in a radiative transfer model that calculated the spectra of the
modeled planets. The O3 and O2 concentrations in the simulated planets are
extremely small, and unlikely to produce a detectable signature in the spectra
of those planets. We conclude that with a balanced hydrogen budget, and for
planets with an active hydrological cycle, abiotic formation of O2 and O3 is
unlikely to create a possible false positive for life detection in either the

Twenty five years of invasion: management of the round goby Neogobius melanostomus in the Baltic Sea
The round goby, Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas, 1814), is one of the most invasive non-indigenous species in the Baltic Sea. It dominates coastal fisheries in some localities and is frequently found in offshore pelagic catches. This paper identifies management issues and suggests actions to be considered for post-invasion management. Priority should be given to the establishment of a coordinated pan-Baltic monitoring programme and associated data storage and exchange, as well as the compilation of landing statistics of the round goby in commercial and recreational fisheries. While eradication is unrealistic, population control that leads to minimising the risk of transfer to yet uncolonised areas in the Baltic Sea and adjacent waterbodies is feasible. This should comprise the requirement that the species be landed in commercial fishery bycatch, the management of ships’ ballast water and sediments, and hull fouling of inland and sea-going vessels, including recreational boats. Extensive involvement of stakeholders is crucial at all phases of the management process
Analysis of the Thermal and Magnetic Properties of Amorphous Fe 61Co10Zr2.5Hf2.5Me2W2B20 (Where Me = Mo, Nb, Ni Or Y) Ribbons
The paper presents the results of structural and magnetic properties and thermal stability for a group of functional materials based on Fe61Co10Zr2.5Hf2.5Me2W2B20 (where Me = Mo, Nb, Ni or Y). Samples were obtained in the form of ribbons using melt-spinning method. The X-ray diffraction patterns of investigated samples confirmed their amorphous structure. Based on the analysis of DSC curves characteristic temperatures: glass forming temperature (Tg), crystallization temperature (Tx) and temperature range of the supercooled liquid ΔTx were determined. Small addition of transition metals elements has strong influence on magnetic and thermal parameters of studied materials. The comprehensive studies revealed that in terms of magnetic properties the Ni-addition resulted in highest reduction in coercivity and anisotropy field
Seasonal melting and the formation of sedimentary rocks on Mars, with predictions for the Gale Crater mound
A model for the formation and distribution of sedimentary rocks on Mars is
proposed. The rate-limiting step is supply of liquid water from seasonal
melting of snow or ice. The model is run for a O(10^2) mbar pure CO2
atmosphere, dusty snow, and solar luminosity reduced by 23%. For these
conditions snow only melts near the equator, and only when obliquity >40
degrees, eccentricity >0.12, and perihelion occurs near equinox. These
requirements for melting are satisfied by 0.01-20% of the probability
distribution of Mars' past spin-orbit parameters. Total melt production is
sufficient to account for aqueous alteration of the sedimentary rocks. The
pattern of seasonal snowmelt is integrated over all spin-orbit parameters and
compared to the observed distribution of sedimentary rocks. The global
distribution of snowmelt has maxima in Valles Marineris, Meridiani Planum and
Gale Crater. These correspond to maxima in the sedimentary-rock distribution.
Higher pressures and especially higher temperatures lead to melting over a
broader range of spin-orbit parameters. The pattern of sedimentary rocks on
Mars is most consistent with a Mars paleoclimate that only rarely produced
enough meltwater to precipitate aqueous cements and indurate sediment. The
results suggest intermittency of snowmelt and long globally-dry intervals,
unfavorable for past life on Mars. This model makes testable predictions for
the Mars Science Laboratory rover at Gale Crater. Gale Crater is predicted to

Molecular investigation of coexistent chronic myeloid leukaemia and peripheral T-cell lymphoma-a case report
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm underlain by the formation of BCR-ABL1-an aberrant tyrosine kinase-in the leukaemic blasts. Long-term survival rates in CML prior to the advent of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) were dismal, albeit the incidence of secondary malignancies was higher than that of age-matched population. Current figures confirm the safety of TKIs with conflicting data concerning the increased risk of secondary tumours. We postulate that care has to be taken when distinguishing between coexisting, secondary-to-treatment and second in sequence, but independent tumourigenic events, in order to achieve an unbiased picture of the adverse effects of novel treatments. To illustrate this point, we present a case of a patient in which CML and peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) coexisted, although the clinical presentation of the latter followed the achievement of major molecular response of CML to TKIs
Creation of a TILLING Population in Barley After Chemical Mutagenesis with Sodium Azide and MNU
Effect of Cryogrinding on Chemical Stability of the Sparingly Water-Soluble Drug Furosemide
Purpose To investigate the effect of cryogrinding on chemical
stability of the diuretic agent furosemide and its mixtures with
selected excipients.
Methods Furosemide was ground at liquid nitrogen temperature
for 30, 60, 120 and 180 min. Mixtures of furosemide-PVP
and furosemide-inulin (1:1) were milled under cryogenic conditions.
Materials were analyzed by XRD, UPLC, MS and NMR.
Results Upon increasing the milling time, a significant build-up
of an unidentified impurity 1, probably the main degradation
product, was noticed. Cogrinding of furosemide with PVP and
inulin worsened chemical stabilization of the pharmaceutical.
The main degradation product formed upon cryomilling was
subsequently identified as 4-chloro-5-sulfamoylanthranilic acid
(CSA). Based on some theoretical considerations involving
specific milling conditions, the milling intensity and an expected
specific milling dose have been calculated. Results indicate that
cryogenic grinding is capable to initiate mechanically induced
decomposition of furosemide.Conclusions Cryogenic grinding can activate and accelerate
not only structural changes (solid state amorphization) but also
chemical decomposition of pharmaceuticals. A cryogenic
milling device should be considered as a chemical reactor,
where under favourable conditions chemical reactions could be
mechanically initiated
