    Incidence of Linguatula serrata nymphs and pathological lesions of mesenteric lymph nodes in cattle from Urmia, Iran

    This study was aimed to determine the infection rates of mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) with Lin-guatula serrata nymphs and their pathological lesions. From November 2012 to June 2013, the MLNs of 104 cattle were randomly sampled in Urmia slaughterhouse, northwestern Iran. They were examined macroscopically and histopathologically. The infected and non-infected lymph nodes were processed for histopathology. They were examined under light microscope and observations were recorded. The results indicated that out of 104 sampled cattle, 63 (60.57%) were infected. Macro-scopic examination revealed that the infected lymph nodes were swollen and dark, with rubbery con-sistency, some with subcapsular haemorrhages on cutting. The mean number of counted lymph node follicles in the nodes from healthy cattle at random microscopic levels was 18±2.8 (range 15–23), compared to 48.9±3.7 (range 44–57) in the infected nodes. Because L. serrata is a zoonotic parasite, preventive measures should be adopted to break the parasite’s cycle and minimise the risk of infection in both humans and other animals

    The effect of magnesium on bioactivity, rheology and biology behaviors of injectable bioactive glass-gelatin-3-glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane nanocomposite-paste for small bone defects repair

    Injectable bioactive glass-based pastes represent promising biomaterials to fill small bone defects thus improving and speed up the self-healing process. Accordingly, injectable nanocomposite pastes based on bioactive glass-gelatin-3-glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) were here synthesized via two different glasses 64SiO2. 27CaO. 4MgO. 5P2O5 (mol.%) and 64SiO2.31CaO. 5P2O5 (mol.%). In particular, the effects of MgO on bioactivity, rheology, injectability, disintegration resistance, compressive strength and cellular behaviors were investigated. The results showed that the disintegration resistance and compressive strength of the composite were improved by the replacement of MgO; thus, leading to an increase in the amount of storage modulus (Gâ€Č) from 26800 to 43400 Pa, equal to an increase in the viscosity of the paste from 136 × 103 to 219 × 103 Pa s. Since the release rate of ions became more controllable, the formation of calcite was decreased after immersion of the Mg bearing samples in the SBF solution. Specimens’ cytocompatibility was firstly verified towards human osteoblasts by metabolic assay as well as visually confirmed by the fluorescent live/dead staining; finally, the ability of human fibroblasts to penetrate within the pores of 3D composites was verified by a migration assay simulating the devices repopulation upon injection in the injured site

    A Detailed Study of Boost Pressure and Injection Timing on an RCCI Engine Map Fueled with Iso-Octane and N-Heptane Fuels

    By using two types of different fuels and changing the ratios of these fuels, Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition Engine (RCCI) is able to provide a more effective control over combustion phase at different loads and speeds. In a typical RCCI engine which could be considered as a type of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine, a low reactive fuel is injected into the intake port and a high reactive fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber. In this study, a multi-dimensional model coupled with chemical mechanism is developed to simulate an RCCI engine operation fueled with iso-octane as the low reactive fuel and n-heptane as the high reactive one. Initially, the engine map was derived using different quantities of total above-mentioned fuels at different ratios and then engine inappropriate operating points were detected and improved by changing intake air pressure and injection timing strategies. The improved criteria to extend engine map are ringing intensity limit, NOx formation standard and gross indicated efficiency. It was concluded that high ringing intensity and NOx formation can be reduced by increasing intake air pressure; also badfire and misfire points can get improved by retarding the injection timing

    Molecular characterization of the Iranian isolates of Giardia lamblia: Application of the glutamate dehydrogenase gene

    Background: This study was conducted to determine of molecular epidemiology of the Giardia lamblia by PCR-RFLP method in Tehran, capital of Iran. Methods: Thirty eight stool samples were randomly selected from 125 patients diagnosed with giardiasis using microscopy in Tehran. DNA extraction of some samples were performed by phenol/chloroform/isoamyl alcohol method and to raise the sensitivity of the PCR assay, the genomic DNA of the others were extracted using glass beads and the QIAamp Stool Mini Kit in order to effectively remove the PCR inhibitors. A single step PCR-RFLP assay, targeting the glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) locus, was used to differentiate within and between assemblages A and B that have been found in humans. Results: Of the 38 isolates, 33 samples (87) were found as G. lamblia (genotype AII), 3 (7.8) belonged to assemblage B, genotype BIII, the mixed of genotype AII and B were detected only in two samples (5.2). Conclusions: PCR-RFLP is a sensitive and powerful analytical tool that allows effective genotype discrimination within and between assemblages at targeting gdh gene, and makes it possible to identify the presence of mixed genotypes. Our data suggest that there is an anthroponotic origin of the infection route, assemblage A group II, in Tehran so it seems that the main reservoir of Giardia infection is humans in the area studies

    Overexpression of ubiquitin and amino acid permease genes in association with antimony resistance in Leishmania tropica field isolates

    The mainstay therapy against leishmaniasis is still pentavalent antimonial drugs; however, the rate of antimony resistance is increasing in endemic regions such as Iran. Understanding the molecular basis of resistance to antimonials could be helpful to improve treatment strategies. This study aimed to recognize genes involved in antimony resistance of Leishmania tropica field isolates. Sensitive and resistant L. tropica parasites were isolated from anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis patients and drug susceptibility of parasites to meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime¼) was confirmed using in vitro assay. Then, complementary DNA-amplified fragment length polymorphism (cDNA-AFLP) and real-time reverse transcriptase-PCR (RT-PCR) approaches were utilized on mRNAs from resistant and sensitive L. tropica isolates. We identified 2 known genes, ubiquitin implicated in protein degradation and amino acid permease (AAP3) involved in arginine uptake. Also, we identified 1 gene encoding hypothetical protein. Real-time RT-PCR revealed a significant upregulation of ubiquitin (2.54-fold), and AAP3 (2.86-fold) (P<0.05) in a resistant isolate compared to a sensitive one. Our results suggest that overexpression of ubiquitin and AAP3 could potentially implicated in natural antimony resistance. © 2013, Korean Society for Parasitology and Tropical Medicine

    NF-ÎșB Mediates Tumor Necrosis Factor α-Induced Expression of Optineurin, a Negative Regulator of NF-ÎșB

    Optineurin is a ubiquitously expressed multifunctional cytoplasmic protein encoded by OPTN gene. The expression of optineurin is induced by various cytokines. Here we have investigated the molecular mechanisms which regulate optineurin gene expression and the relationship between optineurin and nuclear factor ÎșB (NF-ÎșB). We cloned and characterized human optineurin promoter. Optineurin promoter was activated upon treatment of HeLa and A549 cells with tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα). Mutation of a putative NF-ÎșB-binding site present in the core promoter resulted in loss of basal as well as TNFα-induced activity. Overexpression of p65 subunit of NF-ÎșB activated this promoter through NF-ÎșB site. Oligonucleotides corresponding to this putative NF-ÎșB-binding site showed binding to NF-ÎșB. TNFα-induced optineurin promoter activity was inhibited by expression of inhibitor of NF-ÎșB (IÎșBα) super-repressor. Blocking of NF-ÎșB activation resulted in inhibition of TNFα-induced optineurin gene expression. Overexpressed optineurin partly inhibited TNFα-induced NF-ÎșB activation in Hela cells. Downregulation of optineurin by shRNA resulted in an increase in TNFα-induced as well as basal NF-ÎșB activity. These results show that optineurin promoter activity and gene expression are regulated by NF-ÎșB pathway in response to TNFα. In addition these results suggest that there is a negative feedback loop in which TNFα-induced NF-ÎșB activity mediates expression of optineurin, which itself functions as a negative regulator of NF-ÎșB

    Standalone vertex ïŹnding in the ATLAS muon spectrometer

    A dedicated reconstruction algorithm to find decay vertices in the ATLAS muon spectrometer is presented. The algorithm searches the region just upstream of or inside the muon spectrometer volume for multi-particle vertices that originate from the decay of particles with long decay paths. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both a sample of simulated Higgs boson events, in which the Higgs boson decays to long-lived neutral particles that in turn decay to bbar b final states, and pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011

    Measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in diboson final states with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements are presented of production properties and couplings of the recently discovered Higgs boson using the decays into boson pairs, H →γ Îł, H → Z Z∗ →4l and H →W W∗ →lÎœlÎœ. The results are based on the complete pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 25 fb−1. Evidence for Higgs boson production through vector-boson fusion is reported. Results of combined ïŹts probing Higgs boson couplings to fermions and bosons, as well as anomalous contributions to loop-induced production and decay modes, are presented. All measurements are consistent with expectations for the Standard Model Higgs boson

The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN

    Measurement of the top quark pair cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using final states with an electron or a muon and a hadronically decaying τ lepton

    A measurement of the cross section of top quark pair production in proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is reported. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb -1. Events with an isolated electron or muon and a τ lepton decaying hadronically are used. In addition, a large missing transverse momentum and two or more energetic jets are required. At least one of the jets must be identified as originating from a b quark. The measured cross section, σtt-=186±13(stat.)±20(syst.)±7(lumi.) pb, is in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction
