    The Chandra ACIS Timing Survey Project: glimpsing a sample of faint X-ray pulsators

    We report on the discovery of 41 new pulsating sources in the data of the Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer, which is sensitive to X-ray photons in the 0.3-10 keV band. The archival data of the first 15 yr of Chandra observations were retrieved and analysed by means of fast Fourier transforms, employing a peak-detection algorithm able to screen candidate signals in an automatic fashion. We carried out the search for new X-ray pulsators in light curves with more than 50 photons, for a total of about 190 000 light curves out of about 430 000 extracted. With these numbers, the ChAndra Timing Survey at Brera And Roma astronomical observatories (CATS @ BAR) - as we called the project - represents the largest ever systematic search for coherent signals in the classic X-ray band. More than 50 per cent of the signals were confirmed by further Chandra (for those sources with two or more pointings), XMM-Newton or ROSAT data. The period distribution of the new X-ray pulsators above ∼2000 s resembles that of cataclysmic variables, while there is a paucity of sources with shorter period and low fluxes. Since there is not an obvious bias against these detections, a possible interpretation is in terms of a magnetic gating mechanism in accreting neutron stars. Finally, we note that CATS @ BAR is a living project and the detection algorithm will continue to be routinely applied to the new Chandra data as they become public. Based on the results obtained so far, we expect to discover about three new pulsators every year

    Discovery of 3 s pulsations from the Brightest Hard X-ray Source in M31

    We report the discovery with XMM-Newton of 3-s X-ray pulsations from 3XMM J004232.1+411314, a dipping source that dominates the hard X-ray emission of M31. This finding unambiguously assesses the neutron star (NS) nature of the compact object. We also measured an orbital modulation of 4.15 h and a projected semi-axis at aXsini=0.6a_{\mathrm{X}} \sin i= 0.6 lt-s, which implies a low-mass companion of about 0.2-0.3MM_{\odot} assuming a NS of 1.5 MM_{\odot} and an orbital inclination i=7080i=70^{\circ}-80^{\circ}. The barycentric orbit-corrected pulse period decreased by \sim28 ms in about 16 yr, corresponding to an average spin-up rate of P˙6×1011\dot{P} \sim -6 \times 10^{-11} s s1^{-1} ; pulse period variations, probably caused to by X-ray luminosity changes, were observed on shorter time scales. We identify two possible scenarios for the source: a mildly magnetic NS with BpB_{\mathrm{p}}\simeq few ×1010\times10^{10} G if the pulsar is far from its equilibrium period PeqP_{\mathrm{eq}}, and a relatively young highly magnetic NS with Beq1013B_{\mathrm{eq}}\simeq 10^{13} G if spinning close to PeqP_{\mathrm{eq}}.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal Letter

    A deep XMM-Newton observation of the X-Persei-like binary system CXOU J225355.1+624336

    We report on the follow-up XMM-Newton observation of the persistent X-ray pulsar CXOU J225355.1+624336, which was discovered with the CATS@BAR project on archival Chandra data. The source was detected at fX(0.5−10 keV) = 3.4 × 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1, a flux level that is fully consistent with previous observations performed with ROSAT, Swift, and Chandra. When compared with previous measurements, the measured pulse period P = 46.753(3) s implies a constant spin down at an average rate of Ṗ = 5.3 × 10−10 s s−1. The pulse profile is energy dependent, showing three peaks at low energy and a less structured profile above about 3.5 keV. The pulsed fraction slightly increases with energy. We described the time-averaged EPIC spectrum with four different emission models: a partially covered power law, a cutoff power law, and a power law with an additional thermal component (either a black body or a collisionally ionised gas). In all cases we obtained equally good fits, so it was not possible to prefer or reject any emission model on a statistical basis. However, we disfavour the presence of thermal components since their modeled X-ray flux, resulting from a region larger than the neutron star surface, would largely dominate the X-ray emission from the pulsar. The phase-resolved spectral analysis showed that a simple flux variation cannot explain the source variability and proved that there is a spectral variability along the pulse phase. The results of the XMM-Newton observation confirmed that CXOU J225355.1+624336 is a Be X-ray binary (BeXB) with a low luminosity (LX ∼ 1034−35 erg s−1), limited variability, and a constant spin down. Therefore, these results reinforce its source classification as a persistent BeXB.     Periodic signals from the Circinus region: two new cataclysmic variables and the ultraluminous X-ray source candidate GC X-1

    The examination of two 2010 Chandra ACIS (Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer) exposures of the Circinus galaxy resulted in the discovery of two pulsators: CXO J141430.1-651621 and CXOU J141332.9-651756. We also detected 26 ks pulsations in CG X-1, consistently with previous measures. For ̃40 other sources, we obtained limits on periodic modulations. In CXO J141430.1-651621, which is ̃2 arcmin outside the Circinus galaxy, we detected signals at 6120 ± 1 s and 64.2 ± 0.5 ks. In the longest observation, the source showed a flux of abut 1.1 × 10^-13 erg/cm^2/ (absorbed, 0.5-10 keV) and the spectrum could be described by a power law with photon index Γ ≃ 1.4. From archival observations, we found that the luminosity is variable by ≈50 per cent on time-scales of weeks to years. The two periodicities pin down CXO J141430.1-651621 as a cataclysmic variable of the intermediate polar subtype. The period of CXOU J141332.9-651756 is 6378 ± 3 s. It is located inside the Circinus galaxy, but the low absorption indicates a Galactic foreground object. The flux was ≈5 × 10^-14 erg/cm^2/s in the Chandra observations and showed ≈50 per cent variations on weekly/yearly scales; the spectrum is well fitted by a power law with Γ ≃ 0.9. These characteristics and the large modulation suggest that CXOU J141332.9-651756 is a magnetic cataclysmic variable, probably a polar. For CG X-1, we show that if the source is in the Circinus galaxy, its properties are consistent with a Wolf-Rayet (WR) plus black hole (BH) binary. We consider the implications of this for ultraluminous X-ray sources and the prospects of Advanced LIGO and Virgo. In particular, from the current sample of WR-BH systems, we estimate an upper limit to the detection rate of stellar BH-BH mergers of ̃16 y^-1

    En ocho capítulos se aborda el estado del arte de la vid silvestre en MéxicoEl estudio de las especies vegetales nativas de México representa un reto que cada día más investigadores mexicanos asumen. Durante muchos años, el apoyo a la investigación pública ha sido mínimo; desde el punto de vista agronómico es insuficiente para avanzar a la velocidad que requiere nuestro país para afrontar problemas de producción y distribución de alimentos. Por esa razón, entre otras, me es grato presentar esta obra que compila parte de los trabajos de la Red de Vid Silvestre patrocinada por el Sistema Nacional de Recursos Fitogenéticos (sinarefi) dependiente de la sagarpa; trabajos apuntalados por investigadores que sin pertenecer a la red han colaborado en el estudio de las plantas del género Vitis. En este libro se muestra el potencial del país para aprovechar el recurso vid, empleado desde antes de la conquista española por nativos mexicanos que conocían sus bondades. Es necesario continuar el avance en el conocimiento de este recurso, por ello el presente libro pretende invitar a toda persona interesada en contribuir con el rescate y conservación de las vides mexicanas. Los autores y editores, así como las instituciones en donde laboramos y aquellas que patrocinan estas investigaciones, esperamos se cumpla este objetivo y que el lector, alumno, profesor, investigador, público en general, disfrute esta lectura y, sobre todo, se interese en el recurso VitisSEP, SINAREFI, UAEME

    Incidence, clinical characteristics, risk factors and outcomes of meningoencephalitis in patients with COVID-19

    We investigated the incidence, clinical characteristics, risk factors, and outcome of meningoencephalitis (ME) in patients with COVID-19 attending emergency departments (ED), before hospitalization. We retrospectively reviewed all COVID patients diagnosed with ME in 61 Spanish EDs (20% of Spanish EDs, COVID-ME) during the COVID pandemic. We formed two control groups: non-COVID patients with ME (non-COVID-ME) and COVID patients without ME (COVID-non-ME). Unadjusted comparisons between cases and controls were performed regarding 57 baseline and clinical characteristics and 4 outcomes. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biochemical and serologic findings of COVID-ME and non-COVID-ME were also investigated. We identified 29 ME in 71,904 patients with COVID-19 attending EDs (0.40‰, 95%CI=0.27-0.58). This incidence was higher than that observed in non-COVID patients (150/1,358,134, 0.11‰, 95%CI=0.09-0.13; OR=3.65, 95%CI=2.45-5.44). With respect to non-COVID-ME, COVID-ME more frequently had dyspnea and chest X-ray abnormalities, and neck stiffness was less frequent (OR=0.3, 95%CI=0.1-0.9). In 69.0% of COVID-ME, CSF cells were predominantly lymphocytes, and SARS-CoV-2 antigen was detected by RT-PCR in 1 patient. The clinical characteristics associated with a higher risk of presenting ME in COVID patients were vomiting (OR=3.7, 95%CI=1.4-10.2), headache (OR=24.7, 95%CI=10.2-60.1), and altered mental status (OR=12.9, 95%CI=6.6-25.0). COVID-ME patients had a higher in-hospital mortality than non-COVID-ME patients (OR=2.26; 95%CI=1.04-4.48), and a higher need for hospitalization (OR=8.02; 95%CI=1.19-66.7) and intensive care admission (OR=5.89; 95%CI=3.12-11.14) than COVID-non-ME patients. ME is an unusual form of COVID presentation (<0.5‰ cases), but is more than 4-fold more frequent than in non-COVID patients attending the ED. As the majority of these MEs had lymphocytic predominance and in one patient SARS-CoV-2 antigen was detected in CSF, SARS-CoV-2 could be the cause of most of the cases observed. COVID-ME patients had a higher unadjusted in-hospital mortality than non-COVID-ME patients

    The X-ray astronomy mission eXTP (enhanced X-ray Timing Polarimetry) is designed to study matter under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. Primary goals are the determination of the equation of state (EoS) of matter at supranuclear density, the physics in extremely strong magnetic fields, the study of accretion in strong-field gravity (SFG) regime. Primary targets include isolated and binary neutron stars, strong magneticfield systems like magnetars, and stellar-mass and supermassive black holes.     The Software Architecture and development approach for the ASTRI Mini-Array gamma-ray air-Cherenkov experiment at the Observatorio del Teide

    The ASTRI Mini-Array is an international collaboration led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) and devoted to the imaging of atmospheric Cherenkov light for very-high gamma-ray astronomy. The project is deploying an array of 9 telescopes sensitive above 1 TeV. In this contribution, we present the architecture of the software that covers the entire life cycle of the observatory, from scheduling to remote operations and data dissemination. The high-speed networking connection available between the observatory site, at the Canary Islands, and the Data Center in Rome allows for ready data availability for stereo triggering and data processing

    Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe
