Status of IGEX dark matter search at Canfranc Underground Laboratory
One IGEX 76Ge double-beta decay detector is currently operating in the
Canfranc Underground Laboratory in a search for dark matter WIMPs, through the
Ge nuclear recoil produced by the WIMP elastic scattering. In this talk we
report on the on-going efforts to understand and eventually reject the
background at low energy. These efforts have led to the improvement of the
neutron shielding and to partial reduction of the background, but still the
remaining events are not totally identified. A tritium contamination or
muon-induced neutrons are considered as possible sources, simulations and
experimental test being still under progress. According to the success of this
study we comment the prospects of the experiment as well as those of its future
extension, the GEDEON dark matter experiment.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, talk given at 4th International Workshop on the

The Majorana Project
Building a \BBz experiment with the ability to probe neutrino mass in the
inverted hierarchy region requires the combination of a large detector mass
sensitive to \BBz, on the order of 1-tonne, and unprecedented background
levels, on the order of or less than 1 count per year in the \BBz signal
region. The MAJORANA Collaboration proposes a design based on using high-purity
enriched Ge-76 crystals deployed in ultra-low background electroformed Cu
cryostats and using modern analysis techniques that should be capable of
reaching the required sensitivity while also being scalable to a 1-tonne size.
To demonstrate feasibility, the collaboration plans to construct a prototype
system, the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, consisting of 30 kg of 86% enriched \Ge-76
detectors and 30 kg of natural or isotope-76-depleted Ge detectors. We plan to
deploy and evaluate two different Ge detector technologies, one based on a
p-type configuration and the other on n-type.Comment: paper submitted for the 2008 Carolina International Symposium on

The Multiview Observatory for Solar Terrestrial Science (MOST)
We report on a study of the Multiview Observatory for Solar Terrestrial
Science (MOST) mission that will provide comprehensive imagery and time series
data needed to understand the magnetic connection between the solar interior
and the solar atmosphere/inner heliosphere. MOST will build upon the successes
of SOHO and STEREO missions with new views of the Sun and enhanced instrument
capabilities. This article is based on a study conducted at NASA Goddard Space
Flight Center that determined the required instrument refinement, spacecraft
accommodation, launch configuration, and flight dynamics for mission success.
MOST is envisioned as the next generation great observatory positioned to
obtain three-dimensional information of large-scale heliospheric structures
such as coronal mass ejections, stream interaction regions, and the solar wind
itself. The MOST mission consists of 2 pairs of spacecraft located in the
vicinity of Sun-Earth Lagrange points L4 (MOST1, MOST3) and L5 (MOST2 and
MOST4). The spacecraft stationed at L4 (MOST1) and L5 (MOST2) will each carry
seven remote-sensing and three in-situ instrument suites. MOST will also carry
a novel radio package known as the Faraday Effect Tracker of Coronal and
Heliospheric structures (FETCH). FETCH will have polarized radio transmitters
and receivers on all four spacecraft to measure the magnetic content of solar
wind structures propagating from the Sun to Earth using the Faraday rotation
technique. The MOST mission will be able to sample the magnetized plasma
throughout the Sun-Earth connected space during the mission lifetime over a
solar cycle.Comment: 42 pages, 19 figures, 8 tables, to appear in J. Atmospheric and Solar

Beyond the Evidence of the New Hypertension Guidelines. Blood pressure measurement – is it good enough for accurate diagnosis of hypertension? Time might be in, for a paradigm shift (I)
Despite widespread availability of a large body of evidence in the area of hypertension, the translation of that evidence into viable recommendations aimed at improving the quality of health care is very difficult, sometimes to the point of questionable acceptability and overall credibility of the guidelines advocating those recommendations. The scientific community world-wide and especially professionals interested in the topic of hypertension are witnessing currently an unprecedented debate over the issue of appropriateness of using different drugs/drug classes for the treatment of hypertension. An endless supply of recent and less recent "drug-news", some in support of, others against the current guidelines, justifying the use of selected types of drug treatment or criticising other, are coming out in the scientific literature on an almost weekly basis. The latest of such debate (at the time of writing this paper) pertains the safety profile of ARBs vs ACE inhibitors. To great extent, the factual situation has been fuelled by the new hypertension guidelines (different for USA, Europe, New Zeeland and UK) through, apparently small inconsistencies and conflicting messages, that might have generated substantial and perpetuating confusion among both prescribing physicians and their patients, regardless of their country of origin. The overwhelming message conveyed by most guidelines and opinion leaders is the widespread use of diuretics as first-line agents in all patients with blood pressure above a certain cut-off level and the increasingly aggressive approach towards diagnosis and treatment of hypertension. This, apparently well-justified, logical and easily comprehensible message is unfortunately miss-obeyed by most physicians, on both parts of the Atlantic. Amazingly, the message assumes a universal simplicity of both diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, while ignoring several hypertension-specific variables, commonly known to have high level of complexity, such as: - accuracy of recorded blood pressure and the great inter-observer variability, - diversity in the competency and training of diagnosing physician, - individual patient/disease profile with highly subjective preferences, - difficulty in reaching consensus among opinion leaders, - pharmaceutical industry's influence, and, nonetheless, - the large variability in the efficacy and safety of the antihypertensive drugs. The present 2-series article attempts to identify and review possible causes that might have, at least in part, generated the current healthcare anachronism (I); to highlight the current trend to account for the uncertainties related to the fixed blood pressure cut-off point and the possible solutions to improve accuracy of diagnosis and treatment of hypertension (II)
Combination therapy in hypertension: An update
Meticulous control of blood pressure is required in patients with hypertension to produce the maximum reduction in clinical cardiovascular end points, especially in patients with comorbidities like diabetes mellitus where more aggressive blood pressure lowering might be beneficial. Recent clinical trials suggest that the approach of using monotherapy for the control of hypertension is not likely to be successful in most patients. Combination therapy may be theoretically favored by the fact that multiple factors contribute to hypertension, and achieving control of blood pressure with single agent acting through one particular mechanism may not be possible. Regimens can either be fixed dose combinations or drugs added sequentially one after other. Combining the drugs makes them available in a convenient dosing format, lower the dose of individual component, thus, reducing the side effects and improving compliance. Classes of antihypertensive agents which have been commonly used are angiotensin receptor blockers, thiazide diuretics, beta and alpha blockers, calcium antagonists and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. Thiazide diuretics and calcium channel blockers are effective, as well as combinations that include renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system blockers, in reducing BP. The majority of currently available fixed-dose combinations are diuretic-based. Combinations may be individualized according to the presence of comorbidities like diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, heart failure, thyroid disorders and for special population groups like elderly and pregnant females
Observation of Higgs boson production in association with a top quark pair at the LHC with the ATLAS detector
The observation of Higgs boson production in association with a top quark pair (tt H¯ ), based on the analysis of proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, is presented. Using data corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 79.8 fb−1, and considering Higgs boson decays into b¯ b, W W ∗, τ +τ −, γγ , and Z Z∗, the observed significance is 5.8 standard deviations, compared to an expectation of 4.9 standard deviations. Combined with the tt H¯ searches using a dataset corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fb−1 at 7 TeV and 20.3 fb−1 at 8 TeV, the observed (expected) significance is 6.3 (5.1) standard deviations. Assuming Standard Model branching fractions, the total tt H¯ production cross section at 13 TeV is measured to be 670 ± 90 (stat.) +110 −100 (syst.) fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction
