    Estimations of lipid bilayer geometry in fluid lamellar phases

    AbstractThe excess water bilayer thickness, dl,0, and molecular area, A0, of lipid amphiphiles in the fluid lamellar phases of dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) and dipalmitoleoylphosphatidylcholine (DPolPC) have been estimated between 15 and 50°C and for dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) between 25 and 50°C. These determinations have been made from X-ray measurements on samples of known water composition. With respect to temperature, T, dl,0 and A0 are well fitted to a linear equation. We find dl,0 (Å)=(35.68±0.02)−(0.0333±0.0006)T (°C) and A0 (Å2)=(70.97±0.05)+(0.136±0.001)T (°C) for DOPC, dl,0 (Å)=(35.2±0.1)−(0.068±0.003)T (°C) and A0 (Å2)=(59.7±0.2)+(0.210±0.006)T (°C) for DMPC, and dl,0 (Å)=(34.54±0.03)−(0.0531±0.0009)T (°C) and A0 (Å2)=(67.12±0.09)+(0.173±0.003)T (°C) for DPolPC. The accuracy of these estimates depends largely on how accurately the excess water point is determined. Ideally, reliable X-ray and compositional data will be available around the excess water and it may be found by simple inspection, but this is the exception rather than the rule, since samples close to water excess normally sequester sizeable amounts of water in defects, which lead to an underestimate of dl,0. and overestimate of A0. In this paper, we report a methodology for identifying and removing such data points and fitting the remaining data in order to determine the excess water point

    Effect of annealing on glassy dynamics and non-Fermi liquid behavior in UCu_4Pd

    Longitudinal-field muon spin relaxation (LF-muSR) experiments have been performed in unannealed and annealed samples of the heavy-fermion compound UCu_4Pd to study the effect of disorder on non-Fermi liquid behavior in this material. The muon spin relaxation functions G(t,H) obey the time-field scaling relation G(t,H) = G(t/H^gamma) previously observed in this compound. The observed scaling exponent gamma = 0.3 pm 0.1, independent of annealing. Fits of the stretched-exponential relaxation function G(t) = exp[-(Lambda t)^K] to the data yielded stretching exponentials K < 1 for all samples. Annealed samples exhibited a reduction of the relaxation rate at low temperatures, indicating that annealing shifts fluctuation noise power to higher frequencies. There was no tendency of the inhomogeneous spread in rates to decrease with annealing, which modifies but does not eliminate the glassy spin dynamics reported previously in this compound.     Melting of Charge/Orbital Ordered States in Nd1/2_{1/2}Sr1/2_{1/2}MnO3_3: Temperature and Magnetic Field Dependent Optical Studies

    We investigated the temperature (T=T= 15 \sim 290 K) and the magnetic field (H=H= 0 \sim 17 T) dependent optical conductivity spectra of a charge/orbital ordered manganite, Nd1/2_{1/2}Sr1/2_{1/2}MnO3_3. With variation of TT and HH, large spectral weight changes were observed up to 4.0 eV. These spectral weight changes could be explained using the polaron picture. Interestingly, our results suggested that some local ordered state might remain above the charge ordering temperature, and that the charge/orbital melted state at a high magnetic field (i.e. at H=H= 17 T and % T= 4.2 K) should be a three dimensional ferromagnetic metal. We also investigated the first order phase transition from the charge/orbital ordered state to ferromagnetic metallic state using the TT- and HH% -dependent dielectric constants ϵ1\epsilon_1. In the charge/orbital ordered insulating state, ϵ1\epsilon_1 was positive and dϵ1/dω0d\epsilon_1/d\omega \approx 0. With increasing TT and HH, ϵ1\epsilon_1 was increased up to the insulator-metal phase boundaries. And then, ϵ1\epsilon_1 abruptly changed into negative and dϵ1/dω>0d\epsilon_1/d\omega >0, which was consistent with typical responses of a metal. Through the analysis of ϵ1% \epsilon_1 using an effective medium approximation, we found that the melting of charge/orbital ordered states should occur through the percolation of ferromagnetic metal domains.Comment: submitted to Phys.     Leptonic and Semileptonic Decays of Charm and Bottom Hadrons

    We review the experimental measurements and theoretical descriptions of leptonic and semileptonic decays of particles containing a single heavy quark, either charm or bottom. Measurements of bottom semileptonic decays are used to determine the magnitudes of two fundamental parameters of the standard model, the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements VcbV_{cb} and VubV_{ub}. These parameters are connected with the physics of quark flavor and mass, and they have important implications for the breakdown of CP symmetry. To extract precise values of Vcb|V_{cb}| and Vub|V_{ub}| from measurements, however, requires a good understanding of the decay dynamics. Measurements of both charm and bottom decay distributions provide information on the interactions governing these processes. The underlying weak transition in each case is relatively simple, but the strong interactions that bind the quarks into hadrons introduce complications. We also discuss new theoretical approaches, especially heavy-quark effective theory and lattice QCD, which are providing insights and predictions now being tested by experiment. An international effort at many laboratories will rapidly advance knowledge of this physics during the next decade.Comment: This review article will be published in Reviews of Modern Physics in the fall, 1995.     Phase diagram of the La1x_{1-x}Cax_{x}MnO3_{3} compound for 0.5x0.90.5\leq x\leq 0.9

    We have studied the phase diagram of La1x_{1-x}Cax_{x}MnO3_{3} for 0.5x0.90.5\leq x\leq 0.9 using neutron powder diffraction and magnetization measurements. At 300 K all samples are paramagnetic and single phase with crystallographic symmetry PnmaPnma. As the temperature is reduced a structural transition is observed which is to a charge-ordered state only for certain x. On further cooling the material passes to an antiferromagnetic ground state with Neel temperature TNT_N that depends on x. For 0.8x0.90.8\leq x\leq 0.9 the structural transformation occurs at the same temperature as the magnetic transition. Overall, the neutron diffraction patterns were explained by considering four phase boundaries for which La1x_{1-x}Cax_xMnO3_3 forms a distinct phase: the CE phase at x=0.50.55x=0.5-0.55, the charge-ordered phase at x=2/3, the monoclinic and C-type magnetic structure at x=0.800.85x=0.80-0.85 and the G-type magnetic structure at x=1. Between these phase boundaries the magnetic reflections suggest the existence of mixed compounds containing both phases of the adjacent phase boundaries in a ratio determined by the lever rule

    Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime.     Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.     Measurement of the inclusive isolated prompt photon cross-section in pp collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV using 35 pb-1 of ATLAS data

    A measurement of the differential cross-section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |eta|<1.37 and 1.52<=|eta|<2.37 in the transverse energy range 45<=E_T<400GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The yields of the signal photons are measured using a data-driven technique, based on the observed distribution of the hadronic energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate and the photon selection criteria. The results are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and found to be in good agreement over four orders of magnitude in cross-section.Comment: 7 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 4 tables, final version published in Physics Letters
