<br /

Analysis of the characteristics of Federated Carpfishing Anglers in Spain

The objective of this work is to know the characteristics of the federated sport anglers who practice the method of fishing known as Carpfishing. The sample is composed of 47 anglers, (n=47) of different fishing clubs that practice the method of Carpfishing in Spain. The investigation was carried out with a quantitative design that was both transversal and descriptive. A descriptive analysis was done in which values of frequency and percentage were found. In the second place, the ANOVA test was performed to compare the differences between groups. The results demonstrate that significant differences were found in distinct items in accordance to the grouping variables analyzed. Among the conclusions, it is pointed out that in relation to the psychophysical characteristics related to the sport that the anglers try to spend as little time as possible without sleeping during a competition

Genomics and metagenomics of trimethylamine-utilizing Archaea in the human gut microbiome

International audienceThe biological significance of Archaea in the human gut microbiota is largely unclear. We recently reported genomic and biochemical analyses of the Methanomassiliicoccales, a novel order of methanogenic Archaea dwelling in soil and the animal digestive tract. We now show that these Methanomassiliicoccales are present in published microbiome data sets from eight countries. They are represented by five Operational Taxonomic Units present in at least four cohorts and phylogenetically distributed into two clades. Genes for utilizing trimethylamine (TMA), a bacterial precursor to an atherosclerogenic human metabolite, were present in four of the six novel Methanomassiliicoccales genomes assembled from ELDERMET metagenomes. In addition to increased microbiota TMA production capacity in long-term residential care subjects, abundance of TMA-utilizing Methanomassiliicoccales correlated positively with bacterial gene count for TMA production and negatively with fecal TMA concentrations. The two large Methanomassiliicoccales clades have opposite correlations with host health status in the ELDERMET cohort and putative distinct genomic signatures for gut adaptation

The purpose of the present communication is to know the existence of an album of photographs of the Alhambra made by the photographer Rafael Garzón. The reason why the document is of great interest, is because it has been remained unpub lished in a farm of Daimiel until nowadays. It is also worth noting the good state of conservation of the same, since it retains the original structure, including crocodile skin covers and the flyleaf. These were used as a book of signatures by different personalities invited to a series of hunts organized in Granada and that allowed to establish the space-time coordinates of the document (where?, when?). The album consists of 22 sheets of cardboard containing 16 large format 55.4 x 43.5 cm albumens that allow us to know the Alhambra at the end of the XIX century. As an added value, the signatures that appear in the album are a rich historical legacy to know the society of the time, as well as the first tourist initiatives around which is one of the most important monuments of Spain and vanguard of this economic activity up to our days

Distribution and inventories of fallout radionuclides (239þ240Pu, 137Cs) and 210Pb to study the filling velocity of salt marshes in Doñana National Park (Spain).

Within an extensive multinational and multidisciplinary project carried out in Doñana National Park (Spain) to investigate its preservation and regeneration, the filling velocity of the salt marshes has been evaluated through the calculation of their average sediment accumulation rates. 239þ240Pu and 137Cs from weapons testing fallout and total 210Pb distribution profiles and inventories have been determined in some of the most characteristic zones of the park, namely, the ponds (or ‘‘lucios’’) and the waterjets (or ‘‘can˜os’’). Plutonium inventories range from 16 to 101 Bq m-2, 137Cs values fluctuate between 514 and 3758 Bq m-2 and unsupported 210Pb values comprise between 124 and 9398 Bq m-2. Average sedimentation rates range from 3 to 5 mm y -1 (1952-2002). These data are higher than those obtained by carbon dating for the period 6500 AD-present, estimated as 1.5-2 mmy-1, suggesting an increase in the accumulation of sediments and the alteration of the park’s hydrodynamics caused by the re-channeling of the major rivers feeding the salt marshes.Peer reviewe

Arterial pressure benefits in heterozygous TH mice

28 p.-5 fig.Catecholamines are essential for the maintenance of physiological homeostasis under basal and stress conditions. We aim to determine the impact of deletion of a single allele of the tyrosine hydroxylase(Th) gene might have on aging arterial pressure and life-span. We found that Th haploinsufficiency prevents age associated increase of arterial pressure (AP) in mature adult mice, and it results in the extension of the half-life of TH-heterozygous (HET) mice respect to their wild-type (WT) littermates.Heart performance was similar in both genotypes. To further investigate the lack of increase in AP with age in TH-HET mice, we measured the AP response to intra-peritoneal administration of substances involved in AP regulation. The response to acetylcholine and the basal sympathetic tone were similar in both genotypes, while norepinephrine had a greater pressor effect in TH-HET mice, which correlated with altered adrenoreceptor expression in blood vessels and the heart. Furthermore,sympatho-adrenomedular response to stress was attenuated in TH-HET mice. Plasma catecholamine levels and urine glucose increased markedly in WT but not in TH-HET mice after stress. Our results showed that TH-HET mice are resistant to age-associated hypertension, present a reduction in the sympathetic response to stress and display an extended half-life.This project was funded by grants from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Spain (BFU 2010-15868 to FdeP and CHS, and SAF 2013-45784-R to JML-N), Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Retic 06/0016,RedinRen and CIBERDEM) and Junta de Castilla y Leon (Excellence Group GR-100 to JML-N).CIBERDEM and RedinRen are initiatives of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad), Spain.Peer reviewe
