Towards sustainable financing models for television production? Challenges for audiovisual policy support in small media markets

    Get PDF
This paper sets out from a contextual perspective to describe and evaluate the mix or ‘policy toolkits’ available for policymakers to sustain the financing of tv drama production in small countries, and the mechanisms to support a viable television production sector. It questions how and to what existing TV production in small nations is affected by international and national shifts caused by multiplication of distribution platforms and shifts in media consumption, and to what extent these challenges affect existing ecosystems of TV production. Basing on an evaluation of existing financing and supporting mechanisms for media policymakers, the paper analyzes the sustainability of existing support and new instruments media policymakers have for future-proof regulation and support for domestic quality content. Evidence from this paper derives from a large-scale analysis of the Flemish audiovisual sector. The research is based on analysis of policy and sector documents (annual reports, press releases, policy documents, legislation), secondary data retrieved from TV producers and broadcasters and a series of semi-structured expert interviews and roundtable discussions with representatives of media organizations along the broadcasting value chain

EU must stand up for jailed Iranian scholar Ahmadreza Djalali. Egmont Commentary 1 December 2020.

A Swedish citizen faces capital punishment without a fair trial. The EU cannot afford to stay silent. In a faraway prison, an Iranian-Swedish scientist awaits execution. Ahmadreza Djalali, a specialist in disaster medicine sentenced to death for allegedly collaborating with Israeli intelligence, was told last week that his execution is imminent. Faced with this grim development, Sweden and Belgium, as well as the NGO Amnesty International, have deployed all possible means to halt his execution. If the European Union is serious about defending the rule of law and the rights of its citizens, it needs to come out strongly in defense of Djalali too. It cannot allow Djalali, like other dual citizens before him, to be reduced to mere pawns in a game of geopolitical chess

BACKGROUND: On-line provision of information during the transition phase after treatment carries great promise in meeting shortcomings in post-treatment care for breast cancer survivors and their partners. The objectives of this study are to describe the development and process evaluation of a tailored informative website and to assess which characteristics of survivors and partners, participating in the feasibility study, are related to visiting the website. METHODS: The development process included quantitative and qualitative assessments of survivors' and partners' care needs and preferences. Participants' use and evaluation of the website were explored by conducting baseline and post-measurements. During the intervening 10--12 weeks 57 survivors and 28 partners were granted access to the website. RESULTS:Fifty-seven percent (n=21) of survivors who took part in the post-measurement indicated that they had visited the website. Compared to non-visitors (n=16), they were more likely to have a partner and a higher income, reported higher levels of self-esteem and had completed treatment for a longer period of time. Partners who consulted the on-line information (42%, n=8) were younger and reported lower levels of social support compared to partners who did not visit the website (n=11). Visitors generally evaluated the content and lay-out positively, yet some believed the information was incomplete and impersonal. CONCLUSIONS: The website reached only about half of survivors and partners, yet was mostly well-received. Besides other ways of providing information and support, a website containing clear-cut and tailored information could be a useful tool in post-treatment care provision

A RECAM E A POLÍTICA CINEMATOGRÁFICA DO MERCOSUL: PROMOÇÃO DA INTEGRAÇÃO REGIONAL E DA DIVERSIDADE CULTURAL?

    Get PDF

[The Beersel castle. Summar

Measurement of the Splitting Function in &ITpp &ITand Pb-Pb Collisions at root&ITsNN&IT=5.02 TeV

Data from heavy ion collisions suggest that the evolution of a parton shower is modified by interactions with the color charges in the dense partonic medium created in these collisions, but it is not known where in the shower evolution the modifications occur. The momentum ratio of the two leading partons, resolved as subjets, provides information about the parton shower evolution. This substructure observable, known as the splitting function, reflects the process of a parton splitting into two other partons and has been measured for jets with transverse momentum between 140 and 500 GeV, in pp and PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair. In central PbPb collisions, the splitting function indicates a more unbalanced momentum ratio, compared to peripheral PbPb and pp collisions.. The measurements are compared to various predictions from event generators and analytical calculations.Peer reviewe

Measurement of nuclear modification factors of gamma(1S)), gamma(2S), and gamma(3S) mesons in PbPb collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV

    Get PDF
The cross sections for ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) production in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV have been measured using the CMS detector at the LHC. The nuclear modification factors, RAA, derived from the PbPb-to-pp ratio of yields for each state, are studied as functions of meson rapidity and transverse momentum, as well as PbPb collision centrality. The yields of all three states are found to be significantly suppressed, and compatible with a sequential ordering of the suppression, RAA(ϒ(1S)) > RAA(ϒ(2S)) > RAA(ϒ(3S)). The suppression of ϒ(1S) is larger than that seen at √sNN = 2.76 TeV, although the two are compatible within uncertainties. The upper limit on the RAA of ϒ(3S) integrated over pT, rapidity and centrality is 0.096 at 95% confidence level, which is the strongest suppression observed for a quarkonium state in heavy ion collisions to date. © 2019 The Author(s).
