Chiral Lagrangians at finite density
The effective SU(2) chiral Lagrangian with external sources is given in the
presence of non-vanishing nucleon densities by calculating the in-medium
contributions of the chiral pion-nucleon Lagrangian. As a by product, a
relativistic quantum field theory for Fermi many-particle systems at zero
temperature is directly derived from relativistic quantum field theory with

Staggered versus overlap fermions: a study in the Schwinger model with
We study the scalar condensate and the topological susceptibility for a
continuous range of quark masses in the Schwinger model with
dynamical flavors, using both the overlap and the staggered discretization. At
finite lattice spacing the differences between the two formulations become
rather dramatic near the chiral limit, but they get severely reduced, at the

Microscopic nonequilibrium theory of double-barrier Josephson junctions
We study nonequilibrium charge transport in a double-barrier Josephson
junction, including nonstationary phenomena, using the time-dependent
quasiclassical Keldysh Green's function formalism. We supplement the kinetic
equations by appropriate time-dependent boundary conditions and solve the
time-dependent problem in a number of regimes. From the solutions,
current-voltage characteristics are derived. It is understood why the
quasiparticle current can show excess current as well as deficit current and
how the subgap conductance behaves as function of junction parameters. A
time-dependent nonequilibrium contribution to the distribution function is
found to cause a non-zero averaged supercurrent even in the presence of an
applied voltage. Energy relaxation due to inelastic scattering in the
interlayer has a prominent role in determining the transport properties of
double-barrier junctions. Actual inelastic scattering parameters are derived
from experiments. It is shown as an application of the microscopic model, how
the nature of the intrinsic shunt in double-barrier junctions can be explained
in terms of energy relaxation and the opening of Andreev channels.Comment: Accepted for Phys. Rev.
Lepton Masses and Mixing in a Left-Right Symmetric Model with a TeV-scale Gravity
We construct a left-right symmetric (LRS) model in five dimensions which
accounts naturally for the lepton flavor parameters. The fifth dimension is
described by an orbifold, S_1/Z_2 times Z'_2, with a typical size of order
TeV^{-1}. The fundamental scale is of order 25 TeV which implies that the gauge
hierarchy problem is ameliorated. In addition the LRS breaking scale is of
order few TeV which implies that interactions beyond those of the standard
model are accessible to near future experiments. Leptons of different
representations are localized around different orbifold fixed points. This
explains, through the Arkani-Hamed-Schmaltz mechanism, the smallness of the tau
mass compared to the electroweak breaking scale. An additional U(1) horizontal
symmetry, broken by small parameters, yields the hierarchy in the charged
lepton masses, strong suppression of the light neutrino masses and accounts for
the mixing parameters. The model yields several unique predictions. In
particular, the branching ratio for the lepton flavor violating process mu^-
--> e^+ e^- e^- is comparable with its present experimental sensitivity.Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure, references added, discussion on the

MANAGING THE IMPACT OF DIFFERENCES IN NATIONAL CULTURE ON SOCIAL CAPITAL IN MULTINATIONAL IT PROJECT TEAMS – A GERMAN PERSPECTIVE
How can management handle relationship problems arising from cultural differences in multinational IT project teams? This paper uses a social capital lens to better understand the negative impact of cultural differences in IT project teams. In contrast to many previous works we do not consider cultural differences as a whole but explore the role of the different national culture dimensions. This allows for a more detailed view on cultural differences in a team context and thus contributes to a better understanding about which dimensions of national culture drive relationship problems and which management measures can help to dampen the negative effects. Based on several exploratory cases (6 multinational IT projects in 4 companies, headquartered in Germany), the authors identify three patterns showing typical problems in team social relationships which arise from differences in particular dimensions of national culture. Pattern-specific as well as general management measures, employed to address the culture-driven negative effects, are identified as well
Menopause Is Associated with Immune Activation in Women with HIV
Background: Persistent immune activation due to gut barrier dysfunction is a suspected cause of morbidity in HIV, but the impact of menopause on this pathway is unknown. Methods: In 350 women with HIV from the Women's Interagency HIV Study, plasma biomarkers of gut barrier dysfunction (intestinal fatty acid binding protein; IFAB), innate immune activation (soluble CD14 and CD163; sCD14, sCD163), and systemic inflammation (interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor receptor 1; IL-6, TNFR1) were measured at 674 person-visits spanning ≤2 years. Results: Menopause (post-vs premenopausal status) was associated with higher plasma sCD14 and sCD163 in linear mixed-effects regression adjusting for age and other covariates (β=161.89 ng/mL; 95% confidence interval [CI], 18.37-305.41 and 65.48 ng/mL, 95% CI, 6.64-124.33, respectively); but not with plasma IFAB, IL-6, or TNFR1. In piece-wise linear mixed-effects regression of biomarkers on years before/after the final menstrual period, sCD14 increased during the menopausal transition by 250.71 ng/mL per year (95% CI, 16.63-484.79; P=.04), but not in premenopausal or postmenopausal periods. Conclusions: In women with HIV, menopause may increase innate immune activation, but data did not support an influence on the gut barrier or inflammation. Clinical implications of immune activation during menopausal transition warrant further investigation
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
