Initiating solar system formation through stellar shock waves
Isotopic anomalies in presolar grains and other meteoritical components require nucleosynthesis in stellar interiors, condensation into dust grains in stellar envelopes, transport of the grains through the interstellar medium by stellar outflows, and finally injection of the grains into the presolar nebula. The proximity of the presolar cloud to these energetic stellar events suggests that a shock wave from a stellar outflow might have initiated the collapse of an otherwise stable presolar cloud. We have begun to study the interactions of stellar shock waves with thermally supported, dense molecular cloud cores, using a three spatial dimension (3D) radiative hydrodynamics code. Supernova shock waves have been shown by others to destroy quiescent clouds, so we are trying to determine if the much smaller shock speeds found in, e.g., asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star winds, are strong enough to initiate collapse in an otherwise stable, rotating, solar-mass cloud core, without leading to destruction of the cloud
Simultaneous Triggered Collapse of the Presolar Dense Cloud Core and Injection of Short-Lived Radioisotopes by a Supernova Shock Wave
Cosmochemical evidence for the existence of short-lived radioisotopes (SLRI)
such as Al and Fe at the time of the formation of primitive
meteorites requires that these isotopes were synthesized in a massive star and
then incorporated into chondrites within yr. A supernova shock wave
has long been hypothesized to have transported the SLRI to the presolar dense
cloud core, triggered cloud collapse, and injected the isotopes. Previous
numerical calculations have shown that this scenario is plausible when the
shock wave and dense cloud core are assumed to be isothermal at K,
but not when compressional heating to K is assumed. We show here
for the first time that when calculated with the FLASH2.5 adaptive mesh
refinement (AMR) hydrodynamics code, a 20 km/sec shock wave can indeed trigger
the collapse of a 1 cloud while simultaneously injecting shock wave
isotopes into the collapsing cloud, provided that cooling by molecular species
such as HO, CO, and H is included. These calculations imply that
the supernova trigger hypothesis is the most likely mechanism for delivering

Probing the formation of intermediate- to high-mass stars in protoclusters II. Comparison between millimeter interferometric observations of NGC 2264-C and SPH simulations of a collapsing clump
The earliest phases of massive star formation in clusters are still poorly
understood. Here, we test the hypothesis for high-mass star formation proposed
in our earlier paper (Peretto et al. 2006). In order to confirm the physical
validity of this hypothesis, we carried out IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer
observations of NGC 2264-C and performed SPH numerical simulations of the
collapse of a Jeans-unstable, prolate dense clump. Our Plateau de Bure
observations reveal the presence of a new compact source (C-MM13) located only
\~ 10000 AU away, but separated by ~ 1.1 km/s in (projected) velocity, from the
most massive Class 0 object (C-MM3) lying at the very center of NGC 2264-C.
Detailed comparison with our numerical SPH simulations supports the view that
NGC 2264-C is an elongated cluster-forming clump in the process of collapsing
and fragmenting along its long axis, leading to a strong dynamical interaction
and possible protostar merger in the central region of the clump. The present
study also sets several quantitative constraints on the initial conditions of
large-scale collapse in NGC 2264-C. Our hydrodynamic simulations indicate that
the observed velocity pattern characterizes an early phase of protocluster
collapse which survives for an only short period of time (i.e., < 10^5 yr). To
provide a good match to the observations the simulations require an initial
ratio of turbulent to gravitational energy of only ~ 5 %, which strongly
suggests that the NGC 2264-C clump is structured primarily by gravity rather
than turbulence. The required "cold'' initial conditions may result from rapid

Linguistic metaconcepts can improve grammatical understanding in L1 education evidence from a Dutch quasi-experimental study

Previous research, involving single group pre-postintervention designs, found positive effects for metaconceptual interventions on secondary school students’ grammatical reasoning ability, although a negative side effect seemed to be that some students started using grammatical concepts ‘blindly’ (i.e., in an inaccurate way). While there are thus important clues that metaconceptual grammar teaching may lead to increased grammatical understanding, there is a great need for more robust empirical research. The current study, involving 196 Dutch 14-year old pre-university students, is a methodological improvement of previous work, adopting a switching replications design. Bayesian multivariate analyses indicate medium to large effects from the metaconceptual intervention on students’ grammatical understanding. The study found a similar effect of the intervention on students’ ability to use explicit grammatical concepts over everyday concepts in tackling grammatical problems. No evidence for increased ‘blind’ concept use as a negative byproduct of the intervention was found. Additional qualitative analyses of in-intervention tasks provided further evidence for the effectiveness of metaconceptual interventions, and seemed to indicate that cases of blind concept use, rather than being a negative side effect, might actually be part of a gradual process of students’ growing understanding of grammatical (meta)concepts. Protostellar collapse induced by compression. II: rotation and fragmentation
We investigate numerically and semi-analytically the collapse of low-mass,
rotating prestellar cores. Initially, the cores are in approximate equilibrium
with low rotation (the initial ratio of thermal to gravitational energy is
, and the initial ratio of rotational to gravitational
energy is ). They are then subjected to a steady
increase in external pressure. Fragmentation is promoted -- in the sense that
more protostars are formed -- both by more rapid compression, and by higher
rotation (larger ). In general, the large-scale collapse is
non-homologous, and follows the pattern described in Paper I for non-rotating
clouds, viz. a compression wave is driven into the cloud, thereby increasing
the density and the inflow velocity. The effects of rotation become important
at the centre, where the material with low angular momentum forms a central
primary protostar (CPP), whilst the material with higher angular momentum forms
an accretion disc around the CPP. More rapid compression drives a stronger
compression wave and delivers material more rapidly into the outer parts of the

Violent and victimized bodies: sexual violence policy in England and Wales
This paper uses the notion of the body to frame an archaeology of sexual violence policy in England and Wales, applying and developing Pillow’s ideas. It argues that the dominant construction is of sexual violence as an individualized crime, with the solution being for a survivor to report, and with support often instrumentalized in relation to criminal justice objectives. However, criminal justice proceedings can intensify or create further trauma for sexual violence survivors. Furthermore, in addition to criminalizing the violent body and supporting the victimized one, there is a need for policy to produce alternative types of bodies through preventative interventions. Much sexual violence is situated within (hetero) sexual dynamics constructing a masculine aggressor and a feminine body which eventually yields. Prevention must therefore focus on developing embodied boundaries, and narratives at the margins of policy could underpin such efforts
Triggering Collapse of the Presolar Dense Cloud Core and Injecting Short-Lived Radioisotopes with a Shock Wave. I. Varied Shock Speeds
The discovery of decay products of a short-lived radioisotope (SLRI) in the
Allende meteorite led to the hypothesis that a supernova shock wave transported
freshly synthesized SLRI to the presolar dense cloud core, triggered its
self-gravitational collapse, and injected the SLRI into the core. Previous
multidimensional numerical calculations of the shock-cloud collision process
showed that this hypothesis is plausible when the shock wave and dense cloud
core are assumed to remain isothermal at ~10 K, but not when compressional
heating to ~1000 K is assumed. Our two-dimensional models (Boss et al. 2008)
with the FLASH2.5 adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) hydrodynamics code have shown
that a 20 km/sec shock front can simultaneously trigger collapse of a 1 solar
mass core and inject shock wave material, provided that cooling by molecular
species such as H2O, CO, and H2 is included. Here we present the results for
similar calculations with shock speeds ranging from 1 km/sec to 100 km/sec. We
find that shock speeds in the range from 5 km/sec to 70 km/sec are able to
trigger the collapse of a 2.2 solar mass cloud while simultaneously injecting
shock wave material: lower speed shocks do not achieve injection, while higher
speed shocks do not trigger sustained collapse. The calculations continue to
support the shock-wave trigger hypothesis for the formation of the solar
system, though the injection efficiencies in the present models are lower than

Navigating 'the pit of doom': Affective responses to teaching 'grammar'
publication-status: Publishedtypes: ArticleThis article presents the outcomes of a study investigating current secondary English teachers' beliefs about grammar teaching, and illustrates the salience of teachers' emotional response to the issue. Interviews with 31 teachers reveal two discourses which frame the ways in which teachers express their feelings: a dominant discourse of grammar as threatening, reactionary and dull, and an oppositional discourse which positions grammar as inspiring, fascinating, and empowering. The influence of these discourses on practice is explored, along with examples of how attitudes can change as a result of participation in a research project. © 2012 National Association for the Teaching of English
Failing boys and moral panics: perspectives on the underachievement debate
The paper re-examines the underachievement debate from the perspective of the ‘discourse of derision’ that surrounds much writing in this area. It considers the contradictions and inconsistencies which underpin much of the discourse – from a reinterpretation of examination scores, to the conflation of the concepts of ‘under’ and ‘low’ achievement and finally to the lack of consensus on a means of defining and measuring the term underachievement. In doing so, this paper suggests a more innovative approach for understanding, re-evaluating and perhaps rejecting the notion of underachievement
SAFE, a new therapeutic intervention for families of children with autism: study protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial
IntroductionIncidence of autistic traits, mental health problems, stress and poor coping is high among family members of children with autism. These problems are coupled with challenging behaviour among children with autism. Current treatment for these families is disjointed and costly. The need for whole family support is supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommendations, developments regarding children’s service provision, research and requests by families of children with autism. Despite evidence that family therapies can provide benefits to these families, efficacy has not been subject to a randomised controlled trial. Systemic Autism-related Family Enabling (SAFE) is a new family therapy intervention designed specifically for families of children with autism. We aim to establish the feasibility of running a fully powered randomised controlled trial to evaluate SAFE.Methods and analysisFamilies of children with autism aged 3–16 years will be invited to participate. Consenting participants will be randomised 2:1 to either SAFE+support as usual or support as usual alone. The proposed primary outcome measure for the main trial will be the Systemic CORE 15. Participants will also complete proposed secondary outcome measures, indexing changes in child behaviour, child-parent attachment, anxiety and depression. Generic health economic outcome measures (EuroQol 5 dimensions and Child Health Utility 9 Dimensions) will also provide data on the feasibility of cost-effectiveness analysis. Questionnaires will be completed at baseline and 32 weeks post-allocation. Data on ability to identify, recruit, randomise, retain and collect data from families, acceptability of outcome measures, adherence of therapists and families to the intervention, appropriateness of resource use questionnaires and effectiveness of training will be collected for feasibility analysis. Qualitative data will also explore acceptability of SAFE and reasons for declining and withdrawing from the study.Ethics and disseminationThe current trial protocol received ethical approval from the South West-Exeter Research Ethics Committee (Ref: 17/SW/0192). The findings of the trial will be disseminated in collaboration with our Family Consultation Group and other partners.
