    Complexity and Commitment in Supply Chain Management Initiatives

    While the benefits of supply chain management have been widely reported within industry, adoption of supply chain management initiatives have been slow and below industry expectations. To better understand and effectively address this problem of adoption within industry, this paper takes a closer look at the individual supply chain management initiatives to achieve a new understanding on the barriers that hamper the adoption process. This paper presents a framework that categorises different SCM initiatives according to a complexitycommitment continuum. By analysing three initiatives from the grocery industry, we argue that the inherent complexity of SCM initiatives poses barriers to adoption due to the degree of organisation commitment required

    Consistent model of magnetism in ferropnictides

    The discovery of superconductivity in LaFeAsO introduced the ferropnictides as a major new class of superconducting compounds with critical temperatures second only to cuprates. The presence of magnetic iron makes ferropnictides radically different from cuprates. Antiferromagnetism of the parent compounds strongly suggests that superconductivity and magnetism are closely related. However, the character of magnetic interactions and spin fluctuations in ferropnictides, in spite of vigorous efforts, has until now resisted understanding within any conventional model of magnetism. Here we show that the most puzzling features can be naturally reconciled within a rather simple effective spin model with biquadratic interactions, which is consistent with electronic structure calculations. By going beyond the Heisenberg model, this description explains numerous experimentally observed properties, including the peculiarities of the spin wave spectrum, thin domain walls, crossover from first to second order phase transition under doping in some compounds, and offers new insight in the occurrence of the nematic phase above the antiferromagnetic phase transition.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, revtex

    On the stability of renormalizable expansions in three-dimensional gravity

    Preliminary investigations are made for the stability of the 1/N1/N expansion in three-dimensional gravity coupled to various matter fields, which are power-counting renormalizable. For unitary matters, a tachyonic pole appears in the spin-2 part of the leading graviton propagator, which implies the unstable flat space-time, unless the higher-derivative terms are introduced. As another possibility to avoid this spin-2 tachyon, we propose Einstein gravity coupled to non-unitary matters. It turns out that a tachyon appears in the spin-0 or -1 part for any linear gauges in this case, but it can be removed if non-minimally coupled scalars are included. We suggest an interesting model which may be stable and possess an ultraviolet fixed point.Comment: 32 pages. (A further discussion to avoid tachyons is included.     Observations of Radiation Belt Losses Due to Cyclotron Wave-Particle Interactions

    Electron loss to the atmosphere plays a critical role in driving dynamics of the Earths Van Allen radiation belts and slot region. This is a review of atmospheric loss of radiation belt electrons caused by plasma wave scattering via Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonance. In particular, the focus is on observational signatures of electron loss, which include direct measurements of precipitating electrons, measured properties of waves that drive precipitation, and variations in the trapped population resulting from loss. We discuss wave and precipitation measurements from recent missions, including simultaneous multi-payload observations, which have provided new insight into the dynamic nature of the radiation belts

    ‘Don't show the play at the football ground, nobody will come’: the micro-sociality of co-produced research in an English provincial city

    This article examines the idea that community is best understood through the concept of micro-sociality, as a verb, as ongoing social relations in action, rather than a thing to be possessed, lacked or lost. Such an emphasis on already-existing relations has consequences for the conduct of publicly-funded interventions including socially engaged research projects. This article tells a part of the story of one such project in Peterborough, England in the 2010s. If the project was counter-cultural in working with what was already happening in the city, rather than seeking to proselytize a culturally specific view of citizenship and the arts, it also faced its own political choices regarding whose work to accompany and how. Initiated by a group of outsider academics and artists, it involved transformations at varying scales, both fleeting and longer-lasting, often unplanned. The article takes a look at the project’s own microsociality in the choices city residents made to accompany its intentions and practices. Like other people, university researchers and artists are seen to depend on social relations, including the commitment and care of people they work with
