    Second order convex maximum entropy approximants with applications to high order PDE

    We present a new approach for second order maximum entropy (max-ent) meshfree approximants that produces positive and smooth basis functions of uniform aspect ratio even for non-uniform node sets, and prescribes robustly feasible constraints for the entropy maximization program defining the approximants. We examine the performance of the proposed approximation scheme in the numerical solution by a direct Galerkin method of a number of partial differential equations (PDEs), including structural vibrations, elliptic second order PDEs, and fourth order PDEs for Kirchhoff-Love thin shells and for a phase field model describing the mechanics of biomembranes. The examples highlight the ability of the method to deal with non-uniform node distributions, and the high accuracy of the solutions. Surprisingly, the first order meshfree max-ent approximants with large supports are competitive when compared to the proposed second order approach in all the tested examples, even in the higher order PDEs.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Evaluation of the primary stability in dental implants placed in low density bone with a new drilling technique, Osseodensification:an in vitro study

    Primary stability is an important key determinant of implant osseointegration. We investigated approaches to improve primary implant stability using a new drilling technique termed osseodensification (OD), which was compared with the conventional under-drilling (UD) method utilized for low-density bones. We placed 55 conical internal connection implants in each group, in 30 low-density sections of pig tibia. The implants were placed using twist drill bits in both groups; groups Under Drilling (UD) and Osseodensification (OD) included bone sections subjected to conventional UD and OD drilling, respectively. Before placing the implants, we randomized the bone sections that were to receive these implants to avoid sample bias. We evaluated various primary stability parameters, such as implant insertion torque and resonance frequency analysis (RFA) measurements. The results showed that compared with implants placed using the UD technique, those placed using the OD technique were associated with significantly higher primary stability. The mean insertion torque of the implants was 8.87±6.17 Ncm in group 1 (UD) and 21.72±17.14 Ncm in group 2 (OD). The mean RFA was 65.16±7.45 ISQ in group 1 (UD) and 69.75±6.79 ISQ in group 2 (OD). The implant insertion torque and RFA values were significantly higher in OD group than in UD. Therefore, compared with UD, OD improves primary stability in low-density bones (based on torque and RFA measurements)

    Influencia de los determinantes de salud en la distribución geodemográfica del dengue

    Introduction: dengue, an emergent disease, represents a high incidence in the countries of South America, Central America and the Caribbean, mainly in the tropical and subtropical areas. It is undeniable that social determinants are an indissolubly bound fact to the incidence of this problem of health.Objective: to identify the influence of health determinants in the geo-demographic distribution of the dengue.Method: it was carried out a bibliographical revision in Scielo repository, there were analyzed 47 references to check those that would be useful for the execution of the objective of the article, choosing 19 that appear in the bibliographical references, the work concluded with 21 references.Conclusions: health personnel should continue investigating and working in the activities for prevention, promotion and health education so that the population increases and execute hygienic sanitary knowledge for the eradication of this epidemic.Introducción: el dengue, enfermedad emergente, representa una alta incidencia en los países de Sudamérica, Centroamérica y el Caribe, sobre todo en las zonas tropicales y subtropicales.  Es innegable que los determinantes sociales son un hecho indisolublemente ligado a la incidencia de este problema de salud.Objetivo: identificar la influencia de los determinantes de salud en la distribución geo demográfica del dengue.Método: se realizó una revisión bibliográfica a través del repositorio Scielo, se analizaron 47 referencias para comprobar las que serían útiles para el cumplimiento del objetivo del artículo, escogimos 19 que aparecen en las referencias bibliográficas, el trabajo concluyó con 21 referencias.Conclusiones: el personal de salud debe seguir investigando y accionando en las actividades de prevención, promoción y educación para la salud para que la población incremente y ejecute los conocimientos higiénicos sanitarios para la erradicación de esta epidemia

    Soybean (Glicine max L. Merr) response to basic amendments in soils of Santa Fe and Buenos Aires province

    Soybean (Glicine max L. Merr) is a widespread crop in the Pampas region of Argentina and it is characterized by its high requirement of basic nutrients. Due to the acidification of some soils of this region, four field experiments were carried out in soils of moderate to high actual pH. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of different rates and combination of amendments on soybean yield and yield components, as well as on soil chemical properties. The experimental design was in randomized complete blocks with a factorial arrangement. Treatments included rates between 0 and 2000 kg ha-1 of calcite/shells and dolomite, with and without gypsum addition (200 kg ha-1). The variables evaluated were yield, number of grains/plant, 1.000 kernel weight and soil chemical variables (actual and potential pH, CEC and exchange cations, organic C and N, extractable P). The addition of basic amendments produced crop responses between 209,2 and 1.264 kg ha-1; these responses were negatively related to pH and Ca, and showed a positive correlation with the production level. Crop yield responses could not be explained by the effect of only a few of its components. The changes that occurred in the edaphic properties were not related to the yield increase. Dolomite additions tended to produce greater crop responses, as well as the highest rates of both amendments. In P-deficient soils, a synergistic effect was observed when combining the amendment with P fertilizer.La soja (Glicine max L. Merr) es un cultivo ampliamente difundido en la Región Pampeana argentina y se caracteriza por su elevada exigencia en nutrientes básicos. Dada la acidificación de algunos suelos de este ámbito, se realizaron 4 ensayos de campo en suelos de moderada a fuerte acidez actual. El objetivo fue evaluar la respuesta del rendimiento del cultivo y sus componentes, al agregado de distintas dosis y combinación de enmiendas, en asociación con cambios en las propiedades químicas edáficas. El diseño experimental fue en bloques completos aleatorizados con arreglo factorial. Los tratamientos consistieron de dosis entre 0 y 2000 kg ha-1 de caliza/conchilla y dolomita, con y sin adición de yeso (200 kg ha-1). Se evaluaron rendimiento, Nº granos/planta, peso de 1000 granos y variables químicas edáficas (pH actual y potencial, CIC y cationes intercambiables, C orgánico, N total, P extractable). El agregado de enmiendas básicas produjo incrementos de rendimiento que oscilaron entre 209,2 y 1264,0 kg ha-1, asociados negativamente con el pH y el Ca intercambiable, y positivamente con el nivel de producción. Este incremento no puede ser explicado por su incidencia en sólo alguno de las componentes del rendimiento. Las modificaciones de las propiedades edáficas no tuvieron una asociación estricta con el aumento del rendimiento. Existe una tendencia de mayor respuesta al agregado de dolomita y a las mayores dosis de ambas enmiendas. La evaluación de la adición conjunta de enmienda combinada con P mostró sinergismo de la práctica en un suelo deficiente en este nutriente.Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias y Forestale

    A Regional Red List of Montane Tree Species of the Tropical Andes: Trees at the top of the world

    Andean montane forests are a major global conservation priority owing to their biological richness and high level of species endemism. Botanically the Andes are very rich in species but they remain relatively unstudied. In common with montane forests elsewhere in the world, Andean forests are of great value for the provision of ecosystem services relating to water supply, regulation of regional climate and the capture and storage of carbon. The forests and their component species are however under threat. This report summarises information drawn from a wide variety of sources to provide a regional Red List of trees of Andean tropical montane forests. The species evaluation process has drawn on published national red lists of threatened species, botanical literature, specimen databases, forestry information and expert knowledge. The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria have been used for the evaluation and a component of Natalia?s PhD study has been to evaluate their use for species with limited and dispersed data. Understanding the geographical distribution of the species is very important in conservation assessment. The maps produced for this study are a valuable starting point for the Red Listing and a baseline for monitoring impacts of climate change. In this assessment 70 species are recorded as globally threatened based on the IUCN Red List of Categories and Criteria out of 127 tree species evaluated. In addition 165 national endemic trees of the region have previously been evaluated as globally threatened based on the same IUCN process.     Roadmap on optical security

    Information security and authentication are important challenges facing society. Recent attacks by hackers on the databases of large commercial and financial companies have demonstrated that more research and development of advanced approaches are necessary to deny unauthorized access to critical data. Free space optical technology has been investigated by many researchers in information security, encryption, and authentication. The main motivation for using optics and photonics for information security is that optical waveforms possess many complex degrees of freedom such as amplitude, phase, polarization, large bandwidth, nonlinear transformations, quantum properties of photons, and multiplexing that can be combined in many ways to make information encryption more secure and more difficult to attack. This roadmap article presents an overview of the potential, recent advances, and challenges of optical security and encryption using free space optics. The roadmap on optical security is comprised of six categories that together include 16 short sections written by authors who have made relevant contributions in this field. The first category of this roadmap describes novel encryption approaches, including secure optical sensing which summarizes double random phase encryption applications and flaws [Yamaguchi], the digital holographic encryption in free space optical technique which describes encryption using multidimensional digital holography [Nomura], simultaneous encryption of multiple signals [Pérez-Cabré], asymmetric methods based on information truncation [Nishchal], and dynamic encryption of video sequences [Torroba]. Asymmetric and one-way cryptosystems are analyzed by Peng. The second category is on compression for encryption. In their respective contributions, Alfalou and Stern propose similar goals involving compressed data and compressive sensing encryption. The very important area of cryptanalysis is the topic of the third category with two sections: Sheridan reviews phase retrieval algorithms to perform different attacks, whereas Situ discusses nonlinear optical encryption techniques and the development of a rigorous optical information security theory. The fourth category with two contributions reports how encryption could be implemented at the nano- or micro-scale. Naruse discusses the use of nanostructures in security applications and Carnicer proposes encoding information in a tightly focused beam. In the fifth category, encryption based on ghost imaging using single-pixel detectors is also considered. In particular, the authors [Chen, Tajahuerce] emphasize the need for more specialized hardware and image processing algorithms. Finally, in the sixth category, Mosk and Javidi analyze in their corresponding papers how quantum imaging can benefit optical encryption systems.     Implantable Neural Probes for Brain-Machine Interfaces - Current Developments and Future Prospects

    A Brain-Machine interface (BMI) allows for direct communication between the brain and machines. Neural probes for recording neural signals are among the essential components of a BMI system. In this report, we review research regarding implantable neural probes and their applications to BMIs. We first discuss conventional neural probes such as the tetrode, Utah array, Michigan probe, and electroencephalography (ECoG), following which we cover advancements in next-generation neural probes. These next-generation probes are associated with improvements in electrical properties, mechanical durability, biocompatibility, and offer a high degree of freedom in practical settings. Specifically, we focus on three key topics: (1) novel implantable neural probes that decrease the level of invasiveness without sacrificing performance, (2) multi-modal neural probes that measure both electrical and optical signals, (3) and neural probes developed using advanced materials. Because safety and precision are critical for practical applications of BMI systems, future studies should aim to enhance these properties when developing next-generation neural probes

    Evaluación del estado de conservación de los bosques montanos en los Andes tropicales

    Los Andes tropicales constituyen una región única con una alta diversidad de hábitats, producto de complejos gradientes espaciales y ambientales. Los bosques montanos de esta región son considerados como una prioridad global de conservación, debido principalmente a su elevada riqueza biológica y de endemismos. Sin embargo su biodiversidad es de las menos conocidas de toda la región tropical, aunque se reconoce la amplia gama de servicios ambientales que prestan, incluyendo la regulación del clima regional y la captura y almacenamiento de carbono. Este artículo ofrece una perspectiva general del estado de conservación de los bosques montanos tropicales andinos y de los retos que esta implica. Asimismo, proporciona información sobre sus amenazas, identificando aquéllas que con mayor probabilidad sean responsables de aumentar el riesgo de extinción de especies. Se resalta la necesidad de disponer de más información sobre el estado de conservación de las especies para identificar las futuras prioridades de conservación en la región. La reciente iniciativa de la "Lista Roja y planeación para la conservación de especies de árboles montanos de los Andes Tropicales", formada por delegados de varios países de la región, constituirá una sólida base para el desarrollo y enfoque de políticas y respuestas de manejo dirigidas a la reducción de la deforestación y pérdida de especies en estos bosques, incluyendo acciones para promover la creación de áreas protegidas, restauración forestal y manejo forestal sostenible.The tropical Andes is a unique region with high habitat diversity, resulting from complex climatic and spatial gradients. Andean montane forests are currently a major global conservation priority owing to their high species richness and high level of endemism. Nonetheless they are considered one of the least known ecosystems in the tropics, but the breath of ecosystem services that these forests provide, including the regulation of regional climate and the capture and storage of carbon, is widely recognised. This article presents an overview of the conservation status of tropical Andean montane forests and the challenges it entails. It also provides information on threats, including the identification of those that are most likely to be responsible for increasing the extinction risk for many species. It highlights the need for acquiring more information on the conservation status of species as to identify future priorities for conservation in the region. The recent initiative "Red List and conservation planning for montane tree species of the Tropical Andes," made of delegates from several countries in the region, will provide a solid basis for developing policies and managing responses aimed at reducing deforestation and species loss in these forests, including actions to promote the creation of protected areas, forest restoration and sustainable forest management.Bournemouth UniversityBotanic Gardens Conservation InternationalBanco Santande

    Mortality from gastrointestinal congenital anomalies at 264 hospitals in 74 low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries: a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study

    Summary Background Congenital anomalies are the fifth leading cause of mortality in children younger than 5 years globally. Many gastrointestinal congenital anomalies are fatal without timely access to neonatal surgical care, but few studies have been done on these conditions in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We compared outcomes of the seven most common gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries globally, and identified factors associated with mortality. Methods We did a multicentre, international prospective cohort study of patients younger than 16 years, presenting to hospital for the first time with oesophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, exomphalos, anorectal malformation, and Hirschsprung’s disease. Recruitment was of consecutive patients for a minimum of 1 month between October, 2018, and April, 2019. We collected data on patient demographics, clinical status, interventions, and outcomes using the REDCap platform. Patients were followed up for 30 days after primary intervention, or 30 days after admission if they did not receive an intervention. The primary outcome was all-cause, in-hospital mortality for all conditions combined and each condition individually, stratified by country income status. We did a complete case analysis. Findings We included 3849 patients with 3975 study conditions (560 with oesophageal atresia, 448 with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, 681 with intestinal atresia, 453 with gastroschisis, 325 with exomphalos, 991 with anorectal malformation, and 517 with Hirschsprung’s disease) from 264 hospitals (89 in high-income countries, 166 in middleincome countries, and nine in low-income countries) in 74 countries. Of the 3849 patients, 2231 (58·0%) were male. Median gestational age at birth was 38 weeks (IQR 36–39) and median bodyweight at presentation was 2·8 kg (2·3–3·3). Mortality among all patients was 37 (39·8%) of 93 in low-income countries, 583 (20·4%) of 2860 in middle-income countries, and 50 (5·6%) of 896 in high-income countries (p<0·0001 between all country income groups). Gastroschisis had the greatest difference in mortality between country income strata (nine [90·0%] of ten in lowincome countries, 97 [31·9%] of 304 in middle-income countries, and two [1·4%] of 139 in high-income countries; p≤0·0001 between all country income groups). Factors significantly associated with higher mortality for all patients combined included country income status (low-income vs high-income countries, risk ratio 2·78 [95% CI 1·88–4·11], p<0·0001; middle-income vs high-income countries, 2·11 [1·59–2·79], p<0·0001), sepsis at presentation (1·20 [1·04–1·40], p=0·016), higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score at primary intervention (ASA 4–5 vs ASA 1–2, 1·82 [1·40–2·35], p<0·0001; ASA 3 vs ASA 1–2, 1·58, [1·30–1·92], p<0·0001]), surgical safety checklist not used (1·39 [1·02–1·90], p=0·035), and ventilation or parenteral nutrition unavailable when needed (ventilation 1·96, [1·41–2·71], p=0·0001; parenteral nutrition 1·35, [1·05–1·74], p=0·018). Administration of parenteral nutrition (0·61, [0·47–0·79], p=0·0002) and use of a peripherally inserted central catheter (0·65 [0·50–0·86], p=0·0024) or percutaneous central line (0·69 [0·48–1·00], p=0·049) were associated with lower mortality. Interpretation Unacceptable differences in mortality exist for gastrointestinal congenital anomalies between lowincome, middle-income, and high-income countries. Improving access to quality neonatal surgical care in LMICs will be vital to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 of ending preventable deaths in neonates and children younger than 5 years by 2030
