A mechanical analysis of variable angle-tow composite plates through variable kinematics models based on Carrera’s unified formulation
Variable Angle-Tow (VAT) laminates offer a promising alternative to straight fiber composites. By varying fibers orientation within the structure plane, ambitious design and performance goals can be achieved. However, the wider design space results in a more complex problem with more parameters to consider. Carrera’s Unified Formulation (CUF) has been used in previous works performing buckling, vibrational and stress analyses of VAT plates. Usually, one-dimensional (1D) CUF beam models are used, while two-dimensional (2D) plate models are obtained as a particular case of shells by considering a null curvature. In most cases, a linear law is considered to describe the variation of fibers orientation in the main plane of the structure. The purpose of this article is to extend the CUF 2D plate finite elements family to the mechanical analysis of composite laminated plate structures with curvilinear fibers. The main contribute consists in the development of a CUF FE model within the Reissner’s Mixed Variational Theorem (RMVT) context for an improved calculation of the out-of-plane stress components. Results show that RMVT can predict in-plane stresses and satisfy the though-the-thickness transverse stresses continuity due to inter-layer equilibrium. The accuracy of RMVT-based models is also investigated using two different approximation points distributions along the plates thickness
An integrated approach to supply chain risk analysis
Despite the increasing attention that supply chain risk management is receiving by both researchers and practitioners, companies still lack a risk culture. Moreover, risk management approaches are either too general or require pieces of information not regularly recorded by organisations. This work develops a risk identification and analysis methodology that integrates widely adopted supply chain and risk management tools. In particular, process analysis is performed by means of the standard framework provided by the Supply Chain Operations Reference Model, the risk identification and analysis tasks are accomplished by applying the Risk Breakdown Structure and the Risk Breakdown Matrix, and the effects of risk occurrence on activities are assessed by indicators that are already measured by companies in order to monitor their performances. In such a way, the framework contributes to increase companies' awareness and communication about risk, which are essential components of the management of modern supply chains. A base case has been developed by applying the proposed approach to a hypothetical manufacturing supply chain. An in-depth validation will be carried out to improve the methodology and further demonstrate its benefits and limitations. A review of predictive control techniques for matrix converters — Part II
The second part of this paper presents an overview of different control strategies and applications for matrix converters (MCs) where predictive control techniques are applied. It will be shown that predictive control is a promising alternative to control MCs due to its simplicity and flexibility to include different constrains in the con¬trol for different industrial applications such as renewable energies, grid interconnection, multi-drives systems control, among others. In addition, some limitations and weaknesses of predictive control in MCs such as variable switching frequency, high dependence on the predictive model quality and high computational cost, will be discussed as well as some future trends in control strategies and its application to other topologies or loads
The Electroweak Phase Transition on Orbifolds with Gauge-Higgs Unification
The dynamics of five dimensional Wilson line phases at finite temperature is
studied in the one-loop approximation. We show that at temperatures of order T
\sim 1/L, where L is the length of the compact space, the gauge symmetry is
always restored and the electroweak phase transition appears to be of first
order.
Particular attention is devoted to the study of a recently proposed five
dimensional orbifold model (on S1/Z2) where the Wilson line phase is identified
with the Higgs field (gauge-Higgs unification). Interestingly enough, an
estimate of the leading higher-loop ``daisy'' (or ``ring'') diagram
contributions to the effective potential in a simple five dimensional model,
seems to suggest that the electroweak phase transition can be studied in
perturbation theory even for Higgs masses above the current experimental limit
of 114 GeV. The transition is still of first order for such values of the Higgs
mass. If large localized gauge kinetic terms are present, the transition might

Reference values for low muscle mass and myosteatosis using tomographic muscle measurements in living kidney donors
Low muscle mass and myosteatosis are associated with poor clinical outcomes. Computed tomography (CT) imaging is an objective method for muscle mass and quality assessment; however consensus on cut-off values is lacking. This study assessed age-, sex-, and body mass index (BMI)-specific reference values of skeletal muscle parameters and correlated muscle mass with 24-h urinary creatinine excretion (24-h UCE). In total, 960 healthy subjects were included in this study. Muscle mass and quality were determined using axial CT slices at the vertebral level L3. The muscle area was indexed for height (skeletal muscle index [SMI]). The mean age was 53 ± 11 years, and 50% were male. The SMI reference values for low muscle mass in males were 38.8 cm2/m2 (20–29 years), 39.2 (30–39 years), 39.9 (40–49 years), 39.0 (50–59 years), 37.0 (60–69 years), and 36.8 (70–79 years). For females, these reference values were 37.5 cm2/m2 (20–29 years), 35.5 (30–39 years), 32.8 (40–49 years), 33.2 (50–59 years), 31.2 (60–69 years), and 31.5 (70–79 years). 24-h UCE and SMI were significantly correlated (r = 0.54, p < 0.001) without bias between the two methods of assessing muscle mass. This study provides age-, sex-, and BMI-specific reference values for skeletal muscle parameters that will support clinical decision making.</p
Disorder Induced Phase Transition in a Random Quantum Antiferromagnet
A two-dimensional Heisenberg model with random antiferromagnetic
nearest-neighbor exchange is studied using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. As
the strength of the randomness is increased, the system undergoes a transition
from an antiferromagnetically ordered ground state to a gapless disordered
state. The finite-size scaling of the staggered structure factor and

Experimental Study of rho -> pi0 pi0 gamma and omega -> pi0 pi0 gamma Decays
The e+e- -> pi0 pi0 gamma process was studied in the SND experiment at
VEPP-2M e+e- collider in the energy region 0.60-0.97 GeV. From the analysis of
the energy dependence of measured cross section the branching ratios B(omega ->
pi0 pi0 gamma)= (6.6 +1.4-0.8(stat) +-0.6(syst))x10^-5 and B(rho -> pi0 pi0

Towards a global analysis of polarized parton distributions
We present a technique for implementing in a fast way, and without any
approximations, higher-order calculations of partonic cross sections into
global analyses of parton distribution functions. The approach, which is set up
in Mellin-moment space, is particularly suited for analyses of future data from
polarized proton-proton collisions, but not limited to this case. The
usefulness and practicability of this method is demonstrated for the
semi-inclusive production of hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering and the
transverse momentum distribution of ``prompt'' photons in pp collisions, and a
case study for a future global analysis of polarized parton densities is

Relative expression of mRNAs related to cavitation process in bovine embryos produced in vivo and in vitro
The objectives of this work were to identify and to evaluate possible differences on gene expression of aquaporins and Na/K-ATPases transcripts between embryos in vivo and in vitro produced. For each group, 15 blastocysts distributed in three pools were used for RNA extraction followed by amplification and reverse transcription. The resulting cDNAs were submitted to Real-Time PCR, using the GAPDH gene as endogenous control. It was not possible to identify AQP1 transcripts. Relative expression of AQP3 (1.33 ± 0.78) and AQP11 (2.00 ± 1.42) were not different in blastocysts in vitro and in vivo produced. Na/K-ATPase α1 gene (2.25 ± 1.07) was overregulated whereas Na/K-ATPase β2 transcripts 0.40 ± 0.30) did not differ among blastocysts produced in vitro from those produced in vivo. Transcripts for gene AQP1 are not present in bovine blastocysts. In vitro culture system does not alter expression of genes AQP3, AQP11 and Na/K-ATPase β2 genes, however, it affects expression of Na/K-ATPase α1.Os objetivos neste trabalho foram identificar e avaliar possĂveis diferenças na expressĂŁo gĂŞnica de transcritos de Aquaporina e ATPases-Na/K presentes em embriões produzidos in vivo e in vitro. Para cada grupo, 15 blastocistos distribuĂdos em trĂŞs conjuntos foram utilizados para a extração do RNA, seguida da amplificação e da transcrição reversa. Os DNAs complementares foram submetidos Ă reação em cadeia da enzima polimerase em tempo real, utilizando-se o gene GAPDH como controle endĂłgeno. NĂŁo foi possĂvel identificar transcritos de AQP1. A expressĂŁo relativa dos genes AQP3 (1,33 ± 0,78) e AQP11 (2,00 ± 1,42) nĂŁo foi diferente em blastocistos produzidos in vitro e in vivo. O gene ATPase-Na/K α1 (2,25 ± 1,07) encontrou-se sobrerregulado, enquanto o gene ATPase-Na/K β2 (0,40 ± 0,30) nĂŁo diferiu entre os blastocistos produzidos in vitro e aqueles produzidos in vivo.
