    Diagnostic procedures for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC): recommendations of the European Expert Group

    Background There is currently no Europe-wide consensus on the appropriate preanalytical measures and workflow to optimise procedures for tissue-based molecular testing of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). To address this, a group of lung cancer experts (see list of authors) convened to discuss and propose standard operating procedures (SOPs) for NSCLC. Methods Based on earlier meetings and scientific expertise on lung cancer, a multidisciplinary group meeting was aligned. The aim was to include all relevant aspects concerning NSCLC diagnosis. After careful consideration, the following topics were selected and each was reviewed by the experts: surgical resection and sampling; biopsy procedures for analysis; preanalytical and other variables affecting quality of tissue; tissue conservation; testing procedures for epidermal growth factor receptor, anaplastic lymphoma kinase and ROS proto-oncogene 1, receptor tyrosine kinase (ROS1) in lung tissue and cytological specimens; as well as standardised reporting and quality control (QC). Finally, an optimal workflow was described. Results Suggested optimal procedures and workflows are discussed in detail. The broad consensus was that the complex workflow presented can only be executed effectively by an interdisciplinary approach using a well-trained team. Conclusions To optimise diagnosis and treatment of patients with NSCLC, it is essential to establish SOPs that are adaptable to the local situation. In addition, a continuous QC system and a local multidisciplinary tumour-type-oriented board are essential

    The diseases exposed in individuals, one of them being dyslipidemias, produce alterations in the processes of assimilation and disintegration of the lipoproteins that are emitted with traveling concentrations of the lipoproteins that present with disturbed lipid concentrations due to an exaggerated increase in the lipid profile. The objective of the present research is to determine the diagnosis with their respective types of dyslipidemia in older adults in a Health establishment in El Oro - Ecuador, 2021. The current study corresponds to an observational and descriptive prototype exploration, with a cross-sectional design. Cross-sectional, a simple random probabilistic sampling was applied to the population of 121 patients who attended the outpatient clinic of the dispensary. Once the data was obtained, they were subjected to convenience systematization and efficiency techniques to be taken to the Stata program with version 17.0. Among the results, a prevalence of dyslipidemia of 95.04% [95% CI 89.32 – 97.77] is evident. Four types of dyslipidemia were identified, of which the highest prevalence corresponded to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) dyslipidemia (prevalence: 83.47 [95% CI 75.67 - 89.12]), followed by dyslipidemia due to high-density lipoproteins (HDL) (prevalence: 62.81%, [95% CI 53.78 - 71.02]). Therefore, the elderly population must be intervened with educational training programs linked to the environment, health and nutrition, providing the importance of having a quality lifestyle.Las enfermedades expuestas en los individuos una de ellas es las dislipidemias producen alteraciones en procesos de asimilación y desintegración de las lipoproteínas que expiden con concentraciones de lípidos perturbados por aumento exagerado del perfil lipídico. El objetivo de la presente investigación es determinar los tipos de dislipidemias en los adultos mayores de un establecimiento de Salud en El Oro – Ecuador, 2021. El actual estudio corresponde a una exploración de prototipo observacional y descriptiva, con diseño de corte transversal, se aplicó un muestreo probabilístico aleatorio simple, para la población de 121 pacientes que acudieron a consulta externa del dispensario, una vez obtenidos los datos se sometieron a técnicas de sistematización y eficiencia de conveniencia para ser llevados al programa Stata con versión 17.0. Dentro de los resultados se evidencia una prevalencia de dislipidemia de 95,04% [IC95% 89,32 – 97.77]. Se identificaron cuatro tipos de dislipidemias, de las cuales las prevalencias más altas correspondieron a la dislipidemia por lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL) (prevalencia: 83,47 [IC95% 75,67 - 89,12]), seguido de la dislipidemia por lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL) (prevalencia: 62,81%, [IC95% 53,78 - 71,02]). Por lo que se debe de intervenir a la población de los adultos mayores con programas formativos educativos vinculados al entorno, salud y alimentación, suministrando en la importancia de tener un estilo de vida con calidad y calidez

    Searching for converging research using field to field citations

    We define converging research as the emergence of an interdisciplinary research area from fields that did not show interdisciplinary connections before. This paper presents a process to search for converging research using journal subject categories as a proxy for fields and citations to measure interdisciplinary connections, as well as an application of this search. The search consists of two phases: a quantitative phase in which pairs of citing and cited fields are located that show a significant change in number of citations, followed by a qualitative phase in which thematic focus is sought in publications associated with located pairs. Applying this search on publications from the Web of Science published between 1995 and 2005, 38 candidate converging pairs were located, 27 of which showed thematic focus, and 20 also showed a similar focus in the other, reciprocal pair

    Measurement of the relative rate of prompt χc0, χc1 and χc2 production at √s=7TeV

    Prompt production of charmonium χc0, χc1 and χc2 mesons is studied using proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=7TeV. The χc mesons are identified through their decay to J/ψγ, with J/ψ→μ+mu− using photons that converted in the detector. A data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb−1 collected by the LHCb detector, is used to measure the relative prompt production rate of χc1 and χc2 in the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.5 as a function of the J/ψ transverse momentum from 3 to 20 GeV/c. First evidence for χc0 meson production at a hadron collider is also presented

    Study of DJ meson decays to D+π−, D0π+ and D∗+π− final states in pp collisions

    A study of D+π−, D0π+ and D∗+π− final states is performed using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The D1(2420)0 resonance is observed in the D∗+π− final state and the D∗2(2460) resonance is observed in the D+π−, D0π+ and D∗+π− final states. For both resonances, their properties and spin-parity assignments are obtained. In addition, two natural parity and two unnatural parity resonances are observed in the mass region between 2500 and 2800 MeV. Further structures in the region around 3000 MeV are observed in all the D∗+π−, D+π− and D0π+ final states

    Searches for B0(s)→J/ψppˉ and B+→J/ψppˉπ+ decays

    The results of searches for B0(s)→J/ψ pp¯ and B + → J/ψ p p¯ π+ decays are reported. The analysis is based on a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 of pp collisions, collected with the LHCb detector. An excess with 2.8 σ significance is seen for the decay B0s→J/ψ pp¯ and an upper limit on the branching fraction is set at the 90 % confidence level: B(B0s→J/ψ pp¯) < 4.8 × 10−6, which is the first such limit. No significant signals are seen for B0 → J/ψ pp¯ and B+ → J/ψ pp¯ π + decays, for which the corresponding limits are set: B(B0→J/ψ pp¯) < 5.2 × 10−7, which significantly improves the existing limit; and B(B+→J/ψ pp¯π+) < 5.0 × 10−7, which is the first limit on this branching fraction

    The Mitochondrial Genome of Toxocara canis

    Toxocara canis (Ascaridida: Nematoda), which parasitizes (at the adult stage) the small intestine of canids, can be transmitted to a range of other mammals, including humans, and can cause the disease toxocariasis. Despite its significance as a pathogen, the genetics, epidemiology and biology of this parasite remain poorly understood. In addition, the zoonotic potential of related species of Toxocara, such as T. cati and T. malaysiensis, is not well known. Mitochondrial DNA is known to provide genetic markers for investigations in these areas, but complete mitochondrial genomic data have been lacking for T. canis and its congeners. In the present study, the mitochondrial genome of T. canis was amplified by long-range polymerase chain reaction (long PCR) and sequenced using a primer-walking strategy. This circular mitochondrial genome was 14162 bp and contained 12 protein-coding, 22 transfer RNA, and 2 ribosomal RNA genes consistent for secernentean nematodes, including Ascaris suum and Anisakis simplex (Ascaridida). The mitochondrial genome of T. canis provides genetic markers for studies into the systematics, population genetics and epidemiology of this zoonotic parasite and its congeners. Such markers can now be used in prospecting for cryptic species and for exploring host specificity and zoonotic potential, thus underpinning the prevention and control of toxocariasis in humans and other hosts

    A full mechanistic understanding of how secretory cargo proteins are exported from the endoplasmic reticulum for passage through the early secretory pathway is essential for us to comprehend how cells are organized, maintain compartment identity, as well as how they selectively secrete proteins and other macromolecules to the extracellular space. This process depends on the function of a multi-subunit complex, the COPII coat. Here we describe progress towards a full mechanistic understanding of COPII coat function, including the latest findings in this area. Much of our understanding of how COPII functions and is regulated comes from studies of yeast genetics, biochemical reconstitution and single cell microscopy. New developments arising from clinical cases and model organism biology and genetics enable us to gain far greater insight in to the role of membrane traffic in the context of a whole organism as well as during embryogenesis and development. A significant outcome of such a full understanding is to reveal how the machinery and processes of membrane trafficking through the early secretory pathway fail in disease states

    Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay B0s→ ϕμ+μ−

    The determination of the differential branching fraction and the first angular analysis of the decay B[superscript 0][subscript 0] → ϕμ[superscript +]μ[subscript −] are presented using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb[superscript −1], collected by the LHCb experiment at s√=7s=7 TeV. The differential branching fraction is determined in bins of q[superscript 2], the invariant dimuon mass squared. Integration over the full q[superscript 2] range yields a total branching fraction of B(B[superscript 0][subscript s]→ϕμ[superscript +]μ[subscript −])=(7.07[superscript +0.64][subscript −0.59]±0.71±0.71)) × 10[subscript −7], where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third originates from the branching fraction of the normalisation channel. An angular analysis is performed to determine the angular observables F[subscript L], S[subscript 3], A[subscript 6], and A[subscript 9].
