The Influence of the effect of solute on the thermodynamic driving force on grain refinement of Al alloys
Grain refinement is known to be strongly affected by the solute in cast alloys. Addition of some solute can reduce grain size considerably while others have a limited effect. This is usually attributed to the constitutional supercooling which is quantified by the growth restriction factor, Q. However, one factor that has not been considered is whether different solutes have differing effects on the thermodynamic driving force for solidification. This paper reveals that addition of solute reduces the driving force for solidification for a given undercooling, and that for a particular Q value, it is reduced more substantially when adding eutectic-forming solutes than peritectic-forming elements. Therefore, compared with the eutectic-forming solutes, addition of peritectic-forming solutes into Al alloys not only possesses a higher initial nucleation rate resulted from the larger thermodynamic driving force for solidification, but also promotes nucleation within the constitutionally supercooled zone during growth. As subsequent nucleation can occur at smaller constitutional supercoolings for peritectic-forming elements, a smaller grain size is thus produced. The very small constitutional supercooling required to trigger subsequent nucleation in alloys containing Ti is considered as a major contributor to its extraordinary grain refining efficiency in cast Al alloys even without the deliberate addition of inoculants.The Australian Research Council (ARC DP10955737)
Syncytialization and prolonged exposure to palmitate impacts bewo respiration
Placental villous trophoblast mitochondrial respiratory function is critical for a successful pregnancy and environmental influences such as maternal obesity have been associated with respiratory impairment at term. More recently, a gestational high fat diet independent of maternal body composition, has been highlighted as a potential independent regulator of placental mitochondrial metabolism. The current study aimed to characterize the direct impact of a prolonged and isolated exposure to the dietary fatty acids Palmitate (PA) and Oleate (OA) upon placental cell mitochondrial respiratory function. BeWo cytotrophoblast (CT) and syncytiotrophoblast (SCT) cells were treated for 72 h with 100 μM PA, OA or PA+OA (P/O). Live-cell metabolic function was analyzed via the Seahorse XF Mito and Glycolysis Stress tests. Immunoblots and spectrophotometric activity assays were utilized to examine the protein expression and function of electron transport chain (ETC) complexes and key mitochondrial regulatory enzymes. Syncytialization of BeWo cells resulted reduced respiratory activity in conjunction with altered complex I and II activity and decreased pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) protein expression and activity. PA and P/O treatments were associated with increased basal and maximal respiratory activities in BeWo CT cells without alterations in protein expression or activity of individual ETC complexes and mitochondrial substrate regulators. The metabolic suppression in BeWo SCTs was consistent with that previously observed in primary human trophoblast cell cultures, while the observed increases in respiratory activity in PA-treated BeWo CTs may be indicative of an early timepoint of specific dietary saturated fat-mediated placental cell mitochondrial dysfunction
Imbalance of Power: Social Service Entrepreneurs’ Experiences of Entrepreneur-Municipality Relationship
We investigate the complex dynamics between social service entrepreneurs and social
sector managers through the lens of network metaphor, utilizing our data on social
service entrepreneurs’ experiences of cooperation with municipalities. We examine
what kinds of dependencies exist in the entrepreneur–municipality relationships and
what kind of consequences these dependencies have on social service businesses run
by entrepreneurs. Basing on the social service entrepreneurs experience, our findings
suggest that while the cooperation with the municipality represents a prerequisite
for success, their business represent only one alternative for the renewal of social
service structures from the point of view of municipalities. In addition, the existence
of legally enforced supervisory duties incorporates a considerable amount of power
that influences areas of the entrepreneur–municipality relationships and interaction
other than just those defined by the supervisory and regulatory rights.W naszej pracy badamy złożoną dynamikę między przedsiębiorcami oferującymi usługi

z tego sektora, wyniki naszych badań sugerują, że o ile współpraca z władzami
lokalnymi jest warunkiem niezbędnym powodzenia działalności, ich przedsiębiorstwa
stanowią tylko jedną alternatywę dla odnowienia usług społecznych z punktu
widzenia władz lokalnych. Ponadto, istnienie narzuconych przez prawo obowiązków
nadzorowania zawiera w sobie znaczny ładunek władzy, która wpływa na relacje

Advancing the Science of Self‐Management in Adults With Long‐Term Left Ventricular Assist Devices
This study tested the applicability of the individual and family self‐management theory (IFSMT) to self‐management (SM) in patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). From an existing data set, we extracted the following variables that correspond to IFSMT’s conceptual dimensions: anxiety, depression, and cognition (context dimension); self‐efficacy (SM process dimension); adherence and quality of life (QOL; outcome dimensions). Descriptive statistics and partial least squares path modeling procedures were used for data analyses. A total of 100 patients (mean age 52 ± 13.4 years) with continuous flow LVAD designs comprised the present study. Most patients were White (78%), married (69%), college‐educated (72%), and on disability (53%). Their mean anxiety and depression scores were slightly above normal, while their cognitive function scores were slightly lower than normal. LVAD care self‐efficacy, adherence, and QOL were within normal ranges. Factor loadings ranged from 0.50 to 1.0, and there were significant forward path relationships among the context, process, and outcome dimensions (β ranges from 0.02 to 0.60, all P values < 0.05). In conclusion, the IFSMT provides a good fit for SM in LVAD. A Map of the Nanoworld: Sizing up the Science, Politics, and Business of the Infinitesimal
Mapping out the eight main nodes of nanotechnology discourse that have
emerged in the past decade, we explore how various scientific, social, and
ethical islands of discussion have developed, been recognized, and are being
continually renegotiated. We do so by (1) identifying the ways in which
scientists, policy makers, entrepreneurs, educators, and environmental groups
have drawn boundaries on issues relating to nanotechnology; (2) describing
concisely the perspectives from which these boundaries are drawn; and (3)
exploring how boundaries on nanotechnology are marked and negotiated by various

AA9int: SNP interaction pattern search using non-hierarchical additive model set.
MOTIVATION: The use of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) interactions to predict complex diseases is getting more attention during the past decade, but related statistical methods are still immature. We previously proposed the SNP Interaction Pattern Identifier (SIPI) approach to evaluate 45 SNP interaction patterns/patterns. SIPI is statistically powerful but suffers from a large computation burden. For large-scale studies, it is necessary to use a powerful and computation-efficient method. The objective of this study is to develop an evidence-based mini-version of SIPI as the screening tool or solitary use and to evaluate the impact of inheritance mode and model structure on detecting SNP-SNP interactions. RESULTS: We tested two candidate approaches: the 'Five-Full' and 'AA9int' method. The Five-Full approach is composed of the five full interaction models considering three inheritance modes (additive, dominant and recessive). The AA9int approach is composed of nine interaction models by considering non-hierarchical model structure and the additive mode. Our simulation results show that AA9int has similar statistical power compared to SIPI and is superior to the Five-Full approach, and the impact of the non-hierarchical model structure is greater than that of the inheritance mode in detecting SNP-SNP interactions. In summary, it is recommended that AA9int is a powerful tool to be used either alone or as the screening stage of a two-stage approach (AA9int+SIPI) for detecting SNP-SNP interactions in large-scale studies. What research impacts do Australian primary health care researchers expect and achieve?

Funding for research is under pressure to be accountable in terms of benefits and translation of research findings into practice and policy. Primary health care research has considerable potential to improve health care in a wide range of settings, but little is known about the extent to which these impacts actually occur. This study examines the impact of individual primary health care research projects on policy and practice from the perspective of Chief Investigators (CIs).
Methods
The project used an online survey adapted from the Buxton and Hanney Payback Framework to collect information about the impacts that CIs expected and achieved from primary health care research projects funded by Australian national competitive grants.
Results and Discussion
Chief Investigators (CIs) provided information about seventeen completed projects. While no CI expected their project to have an impact in every domain of the framework used in the survey, 76% achieved at least half the impacts they expected. Sixteen projects had published and/or presented their work, 10 projects included 11 doctorate awards in their research capacity domain. All CIs expected their research to lead to further research opportunities with 11 achieving this. Ten CIs achieved their expectation of providing information for policy making but only four reported their research had influenced policy making. However 11 CIs achieved their expectation of providing information for organizational decision making and eight reported their research had influenced organizational decision making.
Conclusion
CIs reported that nationally funded primary health care research projects made an impact on knowledge production, staff development and further research, areas within the realm of influence of the research team and within the scope of awareness of the CIs. Some also made an impact on policy and organizational decision-making, and on localized clinical practice and service delivery. CIs reported few broader economic benefits from their research. Routine use of an instrument of this type would facilitate primary health care research funders' determination of the payback for funding of research in this sector
