    UK public attitudes to whistleblowing

    Get PDF
    This reports on the findings from a public survey (n=2,000 cross-section of UK adult population) on their attitudes towards whistleblowing. 8 questions were inserted in a public omnibus carried out by ComRes. These questions can be regarded as measures for whistleblowing propensity

    The strategic interplay between bundling and merging in complementary markets

    Get PDF
    In this paper, two pairs of complementors have to decide whether to merge and eventually bundle their products. Depending on the degree of competitive pressure in the market, either both pairs decide to merge (with or without bundling), or only one pair merges and bundles, while rivals remain independent. The latter case can very harmful for consumers as it brings surge in prices. We also consider the case in which one pair moves first. Interestingly, we find a parametric region where first movers merge but refrain from bundling, to not induce rivals to merge as well.

    Maraviroc: integration of a new antiretroviral drug class into clinical practice

    Get PDF
    Maraviroc (Pfizer's UK-427857, Selzentry or Celsentri outside the US) is the first agent in the new class of oral HIV-1 entry inhibitors to acquire FDA and EMEA approval. It is expected that this drug will be effective only in a subpopulation of HIV-1-infected people, namely those harbouring only the R5 virus. The wide use of this drug is currently hampered by the lack of a readily available R5 virus only determination test (tropism test) and by insufficient scientific insight into the dynamics of R5 and X4 viruses during infection. We discuss the challenges associated with the currently available assay, as well as the potential role of alternative assays

    Sequential Bayesian updating for Big Data

    The velocity, volume, and variety of big data present both challenges and opportunities for cognitive science. We introduce sequential Bayesian updat-ing as a tool to mine these three core properties. In the Bayesian approach, we summarize the current state of knowledge regarding parameters in terms of their posterior distributions, and use these as prior distributions when new data become available. Crucially, we construct posterior distributions in such a way that we avoid having to repeat computing the likelihood of old data as new data become available, allowing the propagation of information without great computational demand. As a result, these Bayesian methods allow continuous inference on voluminous information streams in a timely manner. We illustrate the advantages of sequential Bayesian updating with data from the MindCrowd project, in which crowd-sourced data are used to study Alzheimer’s Dementia. We fit an extended LATER (Linear Ap-proach to Threshold with Ergodic Rate) model to reaction time data from the project in order to separate two distinct aspects of cognitive functioning: speed of information accumulation and caution

    Innovation by leaders without winner-take-all.

    In innovative races with winner takes all, leading firms invest less than each follower, given exogenous entry (Reinganum, 1985). But with endogenous entry this result is reversed (Etro, 2004). It is argued here that sharing of rewards between the players may alter these predictions.Firms; Free entry; Innovation; IT; Market sharing; Patent race; Prediction; Predictions;

    The value of automated follicle volume measurements in IVF/ICSI

    Get PDF
    Background/Aims: The objective of this literature study is to investigate the place of recent software technology sonography-based automated volume count (SonoAVC) for the automatic measurement of follicular volumes in IVF/ICSI. Its advantages and disadvantages and potential future developments are evaluated. Methods: A total of 74 articles were read via a PubMed literature study.The literature study included 53 articles, 32 of which for the systematic review. Results: The SonoAVC software shows excellent accuracy. Comparing the technology with the “golden standard” two-dimensional (2D) manual follicle measurements, SonoAVC leads to a significantly lower intra- and inter-observer variability. However, there is no significant difference in clinical outcome (pregnancy rate).We noted a significant advantage in the time gained, both for doctor and patient. By storing the images, the technology offers the possibility of including a quality control and continuous training and further standardization of follicular monitoring can be expected. Ovarian reserve testing by measuring the antral follicle count with SonoAVC is highly reliable. Conclusion: This overview of previously published literature shows how SonoAVC offers advantages for clinical practice, without losing any accuracy or reliability. Doctors should be motivated to the general use of follicular volumes instead of follicular diameters

    Industrial organization and the economics of business strategy.

    Get PDF
    Industrial organization (IO) has an important role to play in inspiring the competition and regulation policies of the government. At the same it can be used to clarify the economics of business strategies. The idea here is not to give a comprehensive review, but to draw attention to some striking tendencies, prospects and problems of the field of IO as a source of inspiration for competitive strategies. A first focus will be on credible market strategies and asymmetric information, with implications for internal organization, vertical foreclosure and markets with switching costs. A second point will look at detection of not so obvious possibilities, as there are lower prices with cooperation, disadvantageous mergers, positive side effects for rivals, and disadvantageous price discrimination. Finally some approaches will be discussed to problems concerning high requirements on rationality and lack of robustness. An example will be discussed of a search for robustness in strategic investment models in oligopoly settings with leaders and followers.Economics; Strategy;

    Leader, follower. Strategic investments with asymmetric spillovers.

    This paper analyzes the strategic incentives of ¯rst and second movers in sequential invest- ment games with Stackelberg competition and price leadership on the output market. The study shows that the follower can invest more than the leader when the outgoing spillover from the leader to the follower is su±ciently high, taking into account the outgoing spillover of the follower. This result tends to apply in quantity and price settings. It is also shown that when externalities have opposite signs, the ¯rm with the lowest outgoing spillover is invest- ing most. However, with externalities that have the same sign, the asymmetry of spillovers determines who invests most. A beginning is made with the investigation of the robustness of the tendencies reported.Investments; Investment; Spillovers; Incentives; Competition; Market; Studies; Price setting; Sign; Robustness;
