    Inflammation and immunity in schizophrenia: implications for pathophysiology and treatment.

    Complex interactions between the immune system and the brain might have important aetiological and therapeutic implications for neuropsychiatric brain disorders. A possible association between schizophrenia and the immune system was postulated over a century ago, and is supported by epidemiological and genetic studies pointing to links with infection and inflammation. Contrary to the traditional view that the brain is an immunologically privileged site shielded behind the blood-brain barrier, studies in the past 20 years have noted complex interactions between the immune system, systemic inflammation, and the brain, which can lead to changes in mood, cognition, and behaviour. In this Review, we describe some of the important areas of research regarding innate and adaptive immune response in schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders that, we think, will be of interest to psychiatric clinicians and researchers.     'The terrible twos': Gaining control in the nursery?

    'The terrible twos' are often described as a time of 'gaining control', usually thought of as adults asserting control over children, who learn to control themselves. However, toddlerhood is as much about children learning to take control for themselves. This paper is an attempt to detail something of the social geography in the toddler room of a Scottish nursery, considering both styles of adult control and the ways in which toddlers attempt to appropriate and reconfigure space and time for themselves. That is, the ways in which space and time are negotiated in the course of day-to-day nursery life

    Training future generations to deliver evidence-based conservation and ecosystem management

To be effective, the next generation of conservation practitioners and managers need to be critical thinkers with a deep understanding of how to make evidence-based decisions and of the value of evidence synthesis. 2. If, as educators, we do not make these priorities a core part of what we teach, we are failing to prepare our students to make an effective contribution to conservation practice. 3. To help overcome this problem we have created open access online teaching materials in multiple languages that are stored in Applied Ecology Resources. So far, 117 educators from 23 countries have acknowledged the importance of this and are already teaching or about to teach skills in appraising or using evidence in conservation decision-making. This includes 145 undergraduate, postgraduate or professional development courses. 4. We call for wider teaching of the tools and skills that facilitate evidence-based conservation and also suggest that providing online teaching materials in multiple languages could be beneficial for improving global understanding of other subject areas.Peer reviewe

    The prevalence of anxiety and depression in palliative care patients with cancer in Western Australia and New South Wales

    Objectives: To examine the prevalence and predictors of depression and anxiety in palliative care patients with cancer in Western Australia and New South Wales. Design, setting and participants: A descriptive study of 266 consecutive patients at a range of inpatient and outpatient settings including home care, hospices, and private and tertiary care hospitals in WA and NSW from 1 March to 30 June 2002. Main outcome measures: Self-reported anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) at a cut-off score of ≥8 on each subscale (depression and anxiety) for possible cases, and of ≥11 for probable cases; a cut-off score of ≥19 was used for probable combined depression and anxiety. Results: Patients included 200 in WA and 66 in NSW. For the whole sample, 45.8% of patients were possibly depressed and 22.7% probably depressed; 36.9% were possibly anxious and 19.8% probably anxious. About 25% of patients had probable combined depression and anxiety. Logistic regression analyses indicated that past anxiety in the family predicted probable depression, while age, marital status and past depression predicted probable anxiety. Age and past depression predicted probable combined depression and anxiety. Conclusions: These findings underscore the need for routine screening for anxiety and depression in palliative care settings, including questions about past personal and family history of anxiety and depression, and the need for a range of interventions and support services
