    In the historic buildings built with face brick tile it is very common to have copings and cornices of soldier or header course, made with the same brick as the facade and these bricks are usually more deteriorated than the rest of the facade. The cause of the deterioration is the action of the water combined with dirt, vegetation, and other moisture-related causes. One of the possible systems to conserve and protect these elements is by projecting a water repellent. This article will present the results of tests conducted on laboratory specimens formed by low brick walls with and without the application of a waterproofing treatment, finished off at the top part by a sloping course also of brick.En los edificios históricos construidos con ladrillos de tejar es muy frecuente que los muros y las cornisas estén rematados con el mismo ladrillo, sentado a soga o a tizón, con el que está ejecutada la fachada y que estos ladrillos estén más deteriorados que el resto. La causa del deterioro es la acción del agua combinada con la suciedad, la vegetación y otras lesiones relacionadas con la humedad. Uno de los posibles sistemas para conservar y proteger estos elementos es proyectar un hidrofugante. En este artículo se van a exponer los resultados de los ensayos realizados en laboratorio a probetas formadas por muretes de ladrillos, rematados en la parte superior por una albardilla formada por una hilada inclinada, también de ladrillo, con la aplicación de un tratamiento hidrofugante o sin él

    Abstract— La señalética es una disciplina del diseño gráfico relacionada con la comunicación; es la información que estudia y desarrolla un sistema de comunicación visual, que es reducido a un conjunto de señales o símbolos gráficos de fácil compresión, los cuales cumplen la función de guiar a una persona o conjunto de personas en aquellos puntos o lugares donde se prestan servicios o se planteen dudas acerca del comportamiento. El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar los lugares más afectados por la escasez de señalización dentro de la Universidad Técnica de Manabí (UTM) y los tipos de señaléticas adecuadas para estos. Para ello, se utilizó las principales técnicas de recolección de información, en las cuales se aplicaron los métodos cualitativos y cuantitativos. La población de esta investigación, como antes mencionada, es la UTM, de la cual se tomó como muestra un 20% que es perteneciente a las facultades de Medicina, Electricidad, Idiomas y el Instituto de Ciencias Básicas (ICB) Con los resultados obtenidos se demostró que el tema de la investigación realizada es de interés entre los involucrados, reconociendo la falta de señaléticas en diferentes puntos, lo cual está provocando el irrespeto de los conductores hacia los peatones o ciclistas, corroborando con ello la necesidad de cubrir diferentes áreas con señales que disminuyan el riesgo en el interior de la universidadn.   Index Terms— señales, riesgo, disciplin

    The angiotensin-(1-7)/Mas receptor a xis protects from endothelial cell senescence via klotho and Nrf2 activation

    Endothelial cell senescence is a hallmark of va scular aging that pre disposes to vascular disease. We aimed to explore the capacity of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) heptapeptide angiotensin (Ang)-(1-7) to counteract human endothelial cell senescence and to identify intracellular pathways mediati ng its potential protective action. In human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) cult ures, Ang II promoted cell senescence, as revealed by the enhancement in se nescence-associated galactosidase (SA- -gal+) positive staining, total and telomeric DNA damage, adhesion molecules expression and human mononuclear adhesion to HUVEC monolaye rs. By activating the G-coupled receptor Mas, Ang-(1-7) inhibit ed the pro-senescence action of Ang II, but also of a non- RAS stressor such as the cytokine IL-1 . Moreover, Ang-(1-7) enhanced endothelial klotho levels, while klotho silencing resulted in th e loss of the anti-senescence action of the heptapeptide. Indeed, both Ang-(1-7) and recombinant klotho activated the cytoprotective Nrf2/heme-oxygenase-1 (HO)-1 pathway. The HO-1 inhibitor tin protoporphyrin IX prevented the anti-senescence action evoked by Ang-(1-7) or recombinant klotho. Overall, the present study ide ntifies Ang-(1-7) as an anti-senescence peptide displaying its protectiv e action beyond the RAS by consecutively activating klotho and Nrf2/HO-1. Ang-(1-7) mimetic dru gs may thus prove useful to prevent endothelial cell senescence and its re lated vascular complications

    Determination of Specific Electrocatalytic Sites in the Oxidation of Small Molecules on Crystalline Metal Surfaces

    The identification of active sites in electrocatalytic reactions is part of the elucidation of mechanisms of catalyzed reactions on solid surfaces. However, this is not an easy task, even for apparently simple reactions, as we sometimes think the oxidation of adsorbed CO is. For surfaces consisting of non-equivalent sites, the recognition of specific active sites must consider the influence that facets, as is the steps/defect on the surface of the catalyst, cause in its neighbors; one has to consider the electrochemical environment under which the “active sites” lie on the surface, meaning that defects/steps on the surface do not partake in chemistry by themselves. In this paper, we outline the recent efforts in understanding the close relationships between site-specific and the overall rate and/or selectivity of electrocatalytic reactions. We analyze hydrogen adsorption/desorption, and electro-oxidation of CO, methanol, and ammonia. The classical topic of asymmetric electrocatalysis on kinked surfaces is also addressed for glucose electro-oxidation.     Global urban environmental change drives adaptation in white clover.

    Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world. Variation in the strength of clines was explained by environmental changes in drought stress and vegetation cover that varied among cities. Sequencing 2074 genomes from 26 cities revealed that the evolution of urban-rural clines was best explained by adaptive evolution, but the degree of parallel adaptation varied among cities. Our results demonstrate that urbanization leads to adaptation at a global scale

    Comparative Genomic Analysis of Human Fungal Pathogens Causing Paracoccidioidomycosis

    Paracoccidioides is a fungal pathogen and the cause of paracoccidioidomycosis, a health-threatening human systemic mycosis endemic to Latin America. Infection by Paracoccidioides, a dimorphic fungus in the order Onygenales, is coupled with a thermally regulated transition from a soil-dwelling filamentous form to a yeast-like pathogenic form. To better understand the genetic basis of growth and pathogenicity in Paracoccidioides, we sequenced the genomes of two strains of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Pb03 and Pb18) and one strain of Paracoccidioides lutzii (Pb01). These genomes range in size from 29.1 Mb to 32.9 Mb and encode 7,610 to 8,130 genes. To enable genetic studies, we mapped 94% of the P. brasiliensis Pb18 assembly onto five chromosomes. We characterized gene family content across Onygenales and related fungi, and within Paracoccidioides we found expansions of the fungal-specific kinase family FunK1. Additionally, the Onygenales have lost many genes involved in carbohydrate metabolism and fewer genes involved in protein metabolism, resulting in a higher ratio of proteases to carbohydrate active enzymes in the Onygenales than their relatives. To determine if gene content correlated with growth on different substrates, we screened the non-pathogenic onygenale Uncinocarpus reesii, which has orthologs for 91% of Paracoccidioides metabolic genes, for growth on 190 carbon sources. U. reesii showed growth on a limited range of carbohydrates, primarily basic plant sugars and cell wall components; this suggests that Onygenales, including dimorphic fungi, can degrade cellulosic plant material in the soil. In addition, U. reesii grew on gelatin and a wide range of dipeptides and amino acids, indicating a preference for proteinaceous growth substrates over carbohydrates, which may enable these fungi to also degrade animal biomass. These capabilities for degrading plant and animal substrates suggest a duality in lifestyle that could enable pathogenic species of Onygenales to transfer from soil to animal hosts.National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (U.S.)National Institutes of Health.     Some species of Eunice might reach giant size, often being longer than 2m, and they are known from tropical and temperate seas. Despite their large size and recent internet notoriety, there remain some taxonomic problems in large-sized eunicids, especially since original descriptions were brief and type materials are often missing. As a mean to encourage the solution of this situation, we review the historical progress in the taxonomy of the group, including some comments on generic and specific delineation, and recommend some critical steps to solve the current confusion. These ideally would include collecting in type localities, evaluate ontogenetic morphological changes, and generate some molecular analysis to complement the morphological approach. Rev. Biol.
