Suppression of electron spin decoherence in a quantum dot
The dominant source of decoherence for an electron spin in a quantum dot is
the hyperfine interaction with the surrounding bath of nuclear spins. The
decoherence process may be slowed down by subjecting the electron spin to
suitable sequences of external control pulses. We investigate the performance
of a variety of dynamical decoupling protocols using exact numerical
simulation. Emphasis is given to realistic pulse delays and the long-time
limit, beyond the domain where available analytical approaches are guaranteed
to work. Our results show that both deterministic and randomized protocols are
capable to significantly prolong the electron coherence time, even when using
control pulse separations substantially larger than what expected from the {\em
upper cutoff} frequency of the coupling spectrum between the electron and the
nuclear spins. In a realistic parameter range, the {\em total width} of such a
coupling spectrum appears to be the physically relevant frequency scale

MycoBank gearing up for new horizons.
MycoBank, a registration system for fungi established in 2004 to capture all taxonomic novelties, acts as a coordination hub between repositories such as Index Fungorum and Fungal Names. Since January 2013, registration of fungal names is a mandatory requirement for valid publication under the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants (ICN). This review explains the database innovations that have been implemented over the past few years, and discusses new features such as advanced queries, registration of typification events (MBT numbers for lecto, epi- and neotypes), the multi-lingual database interface, the nomenclature discussion forum, annotation system, and web services with links to third parties. MycoBank has also introduced novel identification services, linking DNA sequence data to numerous related databases to enable intelligent search queries. Although MycoBank fills an important void for taxon registration, challenges for the future remain to improve links between taxonomic names and DNA data, and to also introduce a formal system for naming fungi known from DNA sequence data only. To further improve the quality of MycoBank data, remote access will now allow registered mycologists to act as MycoBank curators, using Citrix software
Effective Rheology of Bubbles Moving in a Capillary Tube
We calculate the average volumetric flux versus pressure drop of bubbles
moving in a single capillary tube with varying diameter, finding a square-root
relation from mapping the flow equations onto that of a driven overdamped
pendulum. The calculation is based on a derivation of the equation of motion of
a bubble train from considering the capillary forces and the entropy production
associated with the viscous flow. We also calculate the configurational
probability of the positions of the bubbles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Multiplicity dependence of jet-like two-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions at = 5.02 TeV
Two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger and
associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a
nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The transverse-momentum
range 0.7 5.0 GeV/ is examined,
to include correlations induced by jets originating from low
momen\-tum-transfer scatterings (minijets). The correlations expressed as
associated yield per trigger particle are obtained in the pseudorapidity range
. The near-side long-range pseudorapidity correlations observed in
high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions are subtracted from both near-side
short-range and away-side correlations in order to remove the non-jet-like
components. The yields in the jet-like peaks are found to be invariant with
event multiplicity with the exception of events with low multiplicity. This
invariance is consistent with the particles being produced via the incoherent
fragmentation of multiple parton--parton scatterings, while the yield related
to the previously observed ridge structures is not jet-related. The number of
uncorrelated sources of particle production is found to increase linearly with
multiplicity, suggesting no saturation of the number of multi-parton
interactions even in the highest multiplicity p-Pb collisions. Further, the
number scales in the intermediate multiplicity region with the number of binary

Expression of Mcm2, geminin and Ki67 in normal oral mucosa, oral epithelial dysplasias and their corresponding squamous-cell carcinomas
Proteins necessary for the normal regulation of the cell cycle include minichromosome maintenance protein 2 (Mcm2) and geminin.
These are overexpressed in several premalignant and malignant tumours. The Mcm2/Ki67 ratio can be used to estimate the
population of cells that are in early G1 (licensed to proliferate), and the geminin/Ki67 ratio can determine the relative length of G1.
A high ratio indicates a short G1 and a high rate of cell proliferation. Mcm2 and geminin have been scarcely explored in oral epithelial
dysplasia (OED) and oral squamous-cell carcinoma (OSCC). The purpose of this study was to identify the expression pattern of
Mcm2, Ki67 and geminin in normal oral mucosa (NOM), OED and their subsequent OSCC, to determine if expression could help
predict the prognosis of OED. Paraffin sections of 41 OED cases that progressed to carcinoma, 40 OED without malignant
progression, 38 OSCC and 15 NOM were immunostained with antibodies against Mcm2, geminin and Ki67. Labelling indices (LIs)
increased progressively from NOM, OED and OSCC (Mcm2, Po0.001; geminin, Po0.001 and Ki67, Po0.001). In all the OED cases
(n ¼ 81) the levels of expression of Mcm2 (LI, 73.6), geminin (LI, 24.4) and Ki67 (LI, 44.5) were elevated indicating a constant cellcycle
re-entry. When the OED groups were compared, Mcm2 protein expression was higher in the OED with malignant progression
(P ¼ 0.04), likewise there was a significant increase in the Mcm2/Ki67 and geminin/Ki67 ratios (P ¼ 0.04 and 0.02 respectively). Mcm2
and geminin proteins seem to be novel biomarkers of growth and may be useful prognostic tools for OED
The Transcriptional Landscape of the Photosynthetic Model Cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC6803.
Cyanobacteria exhibit a great capacity to adapt to different environmental conditions through changes in gene expression. Although this plasticity has been extensively studied in the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, a detailed analysis of the coordinated transcriptional adaption across varying conditions is lacking. Here, we report a meta-analysis of 756 individual microarray measurements conducted in 37 independent studies-the most comprehensive study of the Synechocystis transcriptome to date. Using stringent statistical evaluation, we characterized the coordinated adaptation of Synechocystis' gene expression on systems level. Evaluation of the data revealed that the photosynthetic apparatus is subjected to greater changes in expression than other cellular components. Nevertheless, network analyses indicated a significant degree of transcriptional coordination of photosynthesis and various metabolic processes, and revealed the tight co-regulation of components of photosystems I, II and phycobilisomes. Detailed inspection of the integrated data led to the discovery a variety of regulatory patterns and novel putative photosynthetic genes. Intriguingly, global clustering analyses suggested contrasting transcriptional response of metabolic and regulatory genes stress to conditions. Polymerase δ replicates both strands after homologous recombination-dependent fork restart
To maintain genetic stability DNA must be replicated only once and replication completed even when individual replication forks are inactivated. Because fork inactivation is common, the passive convergence of an adjacent fork is insufficient to rescue all inactive forks. Thus, eukaryotic cells have evolved homologous recombination-dependent mechanisms to restart persistent inactive forks. Completing DNA synthesis via Homologous Recombination Restarted Replication (HoRReR) ensures cell survival, but at a cost. One such cost is increased mutagenesis caused by HoRReR being more error prone than canonical replication. This increased error rate implies that the HoRReR mechanism is distinct from that of a canonical fork. Here we exploit the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe to demonstrate that a DNA sequence duplicated by HoRReR during S phase is replicated semi-conservatively, but that both the leading and lagging strands are synthesised by DNA polymerase delta
Computation of Windstorm Catalogues and Windstorm Severity Indices 1969-2013 for the UK and 11 UK Regions
This document outlines the methodology employed by the Climate Extremes Group in the Department of Space and Climate Physics at University College London (UCL) to identify and severity rank UK windstorms for the 45-year period from 1969 to 2013. The UCL methodology is underpinned by a robust UK windstorm definition that is applied to cleaned and homogenised continuous gust observations from 262 low-level station sites spread evenly around the UK. Windstorm catalogues and event severity rankings are provided for the whole UK and, uniquely, for each of 11 UK regions. The product’s background, input data, creation methods and output form are summarised under eight headings. References and appendix figures provide additional information
Methodology for Computation of UK Windstorm Gust Return Levels on a High Spatial Resolution (100 m) Grid
This document outlines the methodology employed by the Climate Extremes Group in the Department of Space and Climate Physics at University College London (UCL) to compute windstorm gust return levels (from 1 year to 1000 years) at high spatial resolution (100 m grid) for the whole UK. The methodology is summarised under eight headings. A ninth section addresses the precision of the gust return levels. Charge separation relative to the reaction plane in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Measurements of charge dependent azimuthal correlations with the ALICE
detector at the LHC are reported for Pb-Pb collisions at TeV. Two- and three-particle charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in
the pseudo-rapidity range are presented as a function of the
collision centrality, particle separation in pseudo-rapidity, and transverse
momentum. A clear signal compatible with a charge-dependent separation relative
to the reaction plane is observed, which shows little or no collision energy
dependence when compared to measurements at RHIC energies. This provides a new
insight for understanding the nature of the charge dependent azimuthal
