    Curriculum design at a crossroads: A comparative approach to re-evaluating knowledge frameworks

    THE NEED FOR CURRICULUM REFORM is often galvanised through recourse to changes in the world of work and society; where new technologies, global movement and economic agendas perennially shift expectations for students and teachers (Stoer & Magalhaes, 2004). It is against this backdrop of globalisation that the Tasmanian Department of Education has initiated curriculum change, based on a model of learning that centralises thinking in the curriculum (Eisner, 1991). This thinking curriculum has resulted from extensive consultation with interested stakeholders, and the publication of many policy documents (Watt, 200S). This curriculum design will be compared to the framework that the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) has proposed for their Middle Years Programme. This programme is becoming increasingly well known in Australia, as educational providers respond to the globalisation of education (Whitehead, 200S) by using a tried and tested international curriculum. The central element of this programme is the personal project, through which students demonstrate their performance in an area of choice and that demands initiative, engagement and a thorough critical evaluation of the product

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.In this paper, we explore whether perceivers can accurately assess the effectiveness of groups, the group properties perceivers use in their judgement, and the contextual and individual differences that allow some perceivers to be more accurate. Across seven studies, we present consistent evidence that perceivers can judge workgroup effectiveness in videos of different lengths—60, 30, and 10 seconds—and in 10-second silent videos and 10-second audio clips. We find that perceptions of collective properties of groups, including cohesion, affective trust, and cognitive trust partially mediate perceivers’ ability to accurately judge groups. Furthermore, increased attentional focus improves perceivers’ ability to judge group effectiveness. Finally, we find that perceivers with higher levels of social sensitivity are more accurate at judging group effectiveness. We discuss the implications of these findings for the groups literature and social perception literature

    Development and usability evaluation of a nutrition and lifestyle guidance application for people living with and beyond cancer

    There is a need to provide accessible information for health care professionals and for people living beyond treatment. Mobile and digital health technologies provide an ideal platform to access diet and nutrition guidance that is both trusted and evidence-based and so that people know how to alter and monitor eating patterns and behaviours to improve the quality of life. Participatory design and usability evaluation approaches have been utilised to develop a nutrition and lifestyle guidance smartphone application for both people living with and beyond cancer, and for health care professionals involved in advising such patients. The challenges centred on the design, development and evaluation of the first version of a new mobile application named ‘Life Beyond’ are presented. This proof of concept application aims to centralise evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle guidance for those living beyond cancer. It enables users to obtain guidance and information, create and track nutrition and activity related goals and track their progress in the completion of these goals. Consistent feedback from participatory design and usability evaluations drove this research and helped to create an initial solution that met the user expectations. The System Usability Scale (SUS) score of 67.69 denotes an ‘average’ usability and hence further development. More research of extensive end user engagement is needed before an optimal solution is disseminated

    Measuring patient-reported outcomes: moving beyond misplaced common sense to hard science

    Interest in the patient's views of his or her illness and treatment has increased dramatically. However, our ability to appropriately measure such issues lags far behind the level of interest and need. Too often such measurement is considered to be a simple and trivial activity that merely requires the application of common sense. However, good quality measurement of patient-reported outcomes is a complex activity requiring considerable expertise and experience. This review considers the most important issues related to such measurement in the context of chronic disease and details how instruments should be developed, validated and adapted for use in additional languages. While there is often consensus on how best to undertake these activities, there is generally little evidence to support such accord. The present article questions these orthodox views and suggests alternative approaches that have been shown to be effective

    Comparison of diet consumption, body composition and lipoprotein lipid values of Kuwaiti fencing players with international norms

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>No published data is currently available that describes the dietary patterns or physiological profiles of athletes participating on the Kuwaiti national fencing team and its potential impact on health and physical performance. The purpose of this investigation was to: 1) collect baseline data on nutrient intake 2) collect, analyze and report baseline for body composition, plasma lipid and lipoprotein concentrations during the competitive season, 3) compare the results with the international norms, 4) and provide necessary health and nutritional information in order to enhance the athletes' performance and skills.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Fifteen national-class fencers 21.5 Âą 2.6 years of age participated in this study. Food intake was measured using a 3-day food record. Body composition was estimated using both the BOD POD and Body Mass Index (BMI). Total blood lipid profiles and maximum oxygen consumption was measured for each of the subjects during the competitive season.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results of the present study showed significant differences in dietary consumption in comparison with the recommended dietary allowances (RDA). The blood lipids profile and body composition (BMI and % body fat) were in normal range in comparison with international norms However, the average VO<sub>2 max </sub>value was less than the value of the other fencers.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Due to the results of the research study, a dietary regimen can be designed that would better enhance athletic performance and minimize any health risks associated with nutrition. Percent body fat and BMI will also be categorized for all players. In addition, the plasma blood tests will help to determine if any of the players have an excessive level of lipids or any blood abnormalities. The outcomes of present study will have a direct impact on the players health and therefore their skills and athletic performance.</p

    Uptake of genetic testing and long-term tumor surveillance in von Hippel-Lindau disease

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is a hereditary cancer syndrome caused by germline mutations in the <it>VHL </it>gene. Patients have significant morbidity and mortality secondary to vascular tumors. Disease management is centered on tumor surveillance that allows early detection and treatment. Presymptomatic genetic testing is therefore recommended, including in at-risk children.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We tested 17 families (n = 109 individuals) for <it>VHL </it>mutations including 43 children under the age of 18. Personalized genetic counseling was provided pre and post-test and the individuals undergoing presymptomatic testing filled out questionnaires gathering socio-demographic, psychological and psychiatric data. Mutation analysis was performed by direct sequencing of the <it>VHL </it>gene. Mutation-carriers were screened for VHL disease-related tumors and were offered follow-up annual examinations.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mutations were identified in 36 patients, 17 of whom were asymptomatic. In the initial screening, we identified at least one tumor in five of 17 previously asymptomatic individuals. At the end of five years, only 38.9% of the mutation-carriers continued participating in our tumor surveillance program. During this time, 14 mutation carriers developed a total of 32 new tumors, three of whom died of complications. Gender, education, income, marital status and religiosity were not found to be associated with adherence to the surveillance protocol. Follow-up adherence was also independent of pre-test depression, severity of disease, or number of affected family members. The only statistically significant predictor of adherence was being symptomatic at the time of testing (OR = 5; 95% CI 1.2 - 20.3; p = 0.02). Pre-test anxiety was more commonly observed in patients that discontinued follow-up (64.7% vs. 35.3%; p = 0.01).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The high initial uptake rate of genetic testing for VHL disease, including in minors, allowed the discontinuation of unnecessary screening procedures in non mutation-carriers. However, mutation-carriers showed poor adherence to long-term tumor surveillance. Therefore, many of them did not obtain the full benefit of early detection and treatment, which is central to the reduction of morbidity and mortality in VHL disease. Studies designed to improve adherence to vigilance protocols will be necessary to improve treatment and quality of life in patients with hereditary cancer syndromes.</p

    Influence of daily beer or ethanol consumption on physical fitness in response to a high-intensity interval training program. The BEER-HIIT study

This study is part of Cristina Molina-Hidalgo’s Doctoral Thesis conducted in the Official Doctoral Programme in Psychology of the University of Granada, Spain.Background: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is an effective approach to improve physical fitness, but consuming beer, which is a regular practice in many physically active individuals, may interfere with these effects. The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of a 10-week (2 days/week) HIIT program on cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength and power parameters, and also to assess the possible influence on them of a moderate consumption of beer (at least from Monday to Friday) or its alcohol equivalent. Methods: Young (24 ± 6 years old) healthy adults (n = 73, 35 females) were allocated to five groups. Four groups participated in the HIIT intervention program while the fifth group was a control Non-Training group (n = 15). Participants in the training groups chose whether they preferred receiving alcohol or alcohol-free beverages. Those choosing alcohol were randomized to either beer or ethanol intake: (i) T-Beer group (alcohol beer, 5.4%; n = 13) or (ii) T-Ethanol (sparkling water with vodka, 5.4%; n = 14). Those choosing alcohol-free intake were randomized to (iii) T-Water group (sparkling water, 0.0%; n = 16), or (iv) T-0.0Beer group (alcohol-free beer, 0.0%; n = 15). Men ingested 330 ml of the beverage at lunch and 330 ml at dinner; women ingested 330 ml at dinner. Before and after the intervention, maximal oxygen uptake in absolute and relative terms (VO2max.), maximal heart rate, total test duration, hand grip strength and four types of vertical jumps were measured. Results: HIIT induced significant improvements in absolute and relative values of VO2max, and total test duration (all p < 0.05) in all the training groups; also, clinical improvements were found in hand grip strength. These positive effects were not influenced by the regular intake of beer or alcohol. No changes in the vertical jumps occurred in any of the groups. Conclusions: A moderate beer or alcohol intake does not mitigate the positive effect of a 10-week HIIT on physical fitness in young healthy adults.     Severity of Depressive Symptoms and Accuracy of Dietary Reporting among Obese Women with Major Depressive Disorder Seeking Weight Loss Treatment

    An elevation in symptoms of depression has previously been associated with greater accuracy of reported dietary intake, however this association has not been investigated among individuals with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder. The purpose of this study was to investigate reporting accuracy of dietary intake among a group of women with major depressive disorder in order to determine if reporting accuracy is similarly associated with depressive symptoms among depressed women. Reporting accuracy of dietary intake was calculated based on three 24-hour phone-delivered dietary recalls from the baseline phase of a randomized trial of weight loss treatment for 161 obese women with major depressive disorder. Regression models indicated that higher severity of depressive symptoms was associated with greater reporting accuracy, even when controlling for other factors traditionally associated with reporting accuracy (coefficient  =  0.01 95% CI = 0.01 – 0.02). Seventeen percent of the sample was classified as low energy reporters. Reporting accuracy of dietary intake increases along with depressive symptoms, even among individuals with major depressive disorder. These results suggest that any study investigating associations between diet quality and depression should also include an index of reporting accuracy of dietary intake as accuracy varies with the severity of depressive symptoms
