    Efficiency-based design of bending-active tied arches

    [EN] Active bending is recently attracting considerable attention as a new paradigm to build lightweight structures both in research and practice. While there are many references dealing with form-finding methods for bending-active structures, the literature on their performance in relation to their shape and member proportioning is still scarce. This paper addresses the relationship between configuration finding and structural performance in bending-active tied arches: planar arches composed of a bent (active) rod, lower spanning cables and secondary struts that are joined to the rod and act as cable deviators. This simple bending-active arrangement allows to state key relationships between shape, proportion and performance. Starting from the fact that rod segments between struts behave as elastica segments, and selecting the mechanical slenderness of the rod as key parameter, scale-independent relationships between rise-to-span ratio, rod slenderness and stresses after activation have been established for a three-strut tied arch. The limitations posed by keeping stresses in cables after the activation within an acceptable range have been also addressed. Span-deflection ratios corresponding to Eurocode loads for the serviceability limit state have been obtained for a set of three-strut configurations using a non-linear structural model. Results have been represented in terms of rod slenderness, cable slenderness and rise-to-span ratio. The same procedure has been used to determine and represent proper utilization ratios for rod cross-sections in ultimate limit state. All the results have been combined to show the design space corresponding to the given constraints and to exemplify how to extract from it a suitable structural configuration.     The AFLOW Fleet for Materials Discovery

    The traditional paradigm for materials discovery has been recently expanded to incorporate substantial data driven research. With the intent to accelerate the development and the deployment of new technologies, the AFLOW Fleet for computational materials design automates high-throughput first principles calculations, and provides tools for data verification and dissemination for a broad community of users. AFLOW incorporates different computational modules to robustly determine thermodynamic stability, electronic band structures, vibrational dispersions, thermo-mechanical properties and more. The AFLOW data repository is publicly accessible online at aflow.org, with more than 1.7 million materials entries and a panoply of queryable computed properties. Tools to programmatically search and process the data, as well as to perform online machine learning predictions, are also available.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

    Advanced age, time to treatment and long-term mortality: single centre data from the FAST-STEMI network

    Background. Optimization of the techniques and larger accessibility to mechanical reperfusion have significantly improved the outcomes of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, suboptimal results have been observed in certain higher-risk subsets of patients, as in advanced age, where the benefits of primary PCI are more debated. We evaluated the impact of systematic primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and an optimized STEMI network on the long-term prognosis from a single centre experience.Methods. We included STEMI patients included in the FAST-STEMI network between 2016 and 2019. Ischemia duration was defined as the time from symptoms onset to coronary reopening (pain-to-balloon, PTB). The primary study endpoint (PE) was a composite of mortality and recurrent MI at long-term follow-up. Indywidual outcome endpoints were also assessed.Results. We included 253 patients undergoing primary PCI and discharged alive. Mean age was 67.2 ± 12.5 years, 75.1% males and 19.8% diabetics. At a median follow-up of 581 [307–922] days, the primary endpoint occurred in 24 patients (7.9%), of whom 5.5% died. The occurrence of a cardiovascular event was significantly associated with advanced age (p < 0.001), renal failure (p = 0.03), lower ejection fraction at discharge (p = 0.04) and longer in-hospital stay (p = 0.01). The median PTB was 198 minutes [IQR: 125–340 min], that was significantly longer among patients experiencing the PE (p = 0.01). A linear relationship was observed between age and PTB (r = 0.13, p = 0.009). However, both age ≥ 75 years and PTB above the median emerged as independent predictors of the primary endpoint (age: HR [95%CI] = 5.56 [2.26–13.7], p < 0.001, PTB: HR [95%CI] = 3.59 [1.39–9.3], p = 0.01). Similar results were observed for overall mortality.Conclusion. The present study shows that among STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI in a single centre, the duration of ischemia and advance age are independently associated to long-term mortality and recurrent myocardial infarction. However, longer time to reperfusion was observed among elderly patients

    Environmental and Agro-Economic Sustainability of Olive Orchards Irrigated with Reclaimed Water under Deficit Irrigation

    This study explores the effects of the adoption of reclaimed water (RW) as source of irrigation in conjunction with the application of deficit irrigation strategies in an olive orchard (different genotypes) located within the “Valle dei Margi” farmhouse (Eastern Sicily). Specifically, the RW was obtained in situ by treating the wastewater coming from the farmhouse throughout a treatment wetland system (TW). The effects of RW on crop water status (CWS) was assessed by conducting plant-based measurements (i.e., leaf water potential, Ψ, and leaves relative water content, RWC) and determining satellite-based biophysical indicators. An economical and environmental evaluation of the proposed sustainable irrigation practices was carried out by using the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach.The RW quality showed high variability due to fluctuations in the number of customers at the farmhouse during the Covid-19 pandemic period. However, high removal efficiency of the overall TW was reached even if the RW quality did not always accomplish with the limits of the Italian regulations. A strong impact in the variation of Ψ was observed among the olive orchard under the different water regimes, evidencing how CWS performances are greatly conditioned by the genotype. However, no differences in leaves RWC and in satellite-based biophysical indicators were detected, despite the severe water deficit imposed (i.e., 50% of irrigation water reduction). Finally, the results of the LCA analysis underlined that the use of RW may permit to obtain important gains both in economic and environmental terms, thus representing a valid strategy for the olive cultivation

    Co-creation Initiatives in Healthcare in Small Communities

    The uses of technology in public spaces are not new, but now we find new forms of social interactions and practices, socio-spatial representations and relationships. The close relationship between real and virtual worlds also opens up new ways of advancing knowledge. In order to facilitate the implementation of Open Science, we explore different co-creation methods with multiple stakeholders. All groups are involved and have influence throughout the project lifecycle: from the beginning, to planning, to implementation, to dissemination. Research activities should involve a wide variety of stakeholders interested, including government, educators, nurses, charities, civil societies, patient groups and the publics, based in a way to (1) obtaining contributions by customers, (2) selecting the best of these contributions, and (3) incorporating these selected contributions into products, processes, or services. Interactions between Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), public spaces, and healthcare are considered as s a tool for connecting people in small communities (enhancing participation). A Platform (DXP - Digital eXperience Platform) through “headless” technologies may provide content management capabilities and easy integration with devices and various sources, driven by user needs and developed with the concept of “Community in mind” in order to create strong and active communities and transform our small communities into more human environments, rather than just more high-tech places, and to understand that “smartness” should be people-friendly.     Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.
