Association between composition of the human gastrointestinal microbiome and development of fatty liver with choline deficiency
Background & Aims: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease affects up to 30% of the US population, but the mechanisms underlying this condition are incompletely understood. We investigated how diet standardization and choline deficiency influence the composition of the microbial community in the human gastrointestinal tract and the development of fatty liver under conditions of choline deficiency. Methods: We performed a 2-month inpatient study of 15 female subjects who were placed on well-controlled diets in which choline levels were manipulated. We used 454-FLX pyrosequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA bacterial genes to characterize microbiota in stool samples collected over the course of the study. Results: The compositions of the gastrointestinal microbial communities changed with choline levels of diets; each individual's microbiome remained distinct for the duration of the experiment, even though all subjects were fed identical diets. Variations between subjects in levels of Gammaproteobacteria and Erysipelotrichi were directly associated with changes in liver fat in each subject during choline depletion. Levels of these bacteria, change in amount of liver fat, and a single nucleotide polymorphism that affects choline were combined into a model that accurately predicted the degree to which subjects developed fatty liver on a choline-deficient diet. Conclusions: Host factors and gastrointestinal bacteria each respond to dietary choline deficiency, although the gut microbiota remains distinct in each individual. We identified bacterial biomarkers of fatty liver that result from choline deficiency, adding to the accumulating evidence that gastrointestinal microbes have a role in metabolic disorders
Naturalness and Higgs Decays in the MSSM with a Singlet
The simplest extension of the supersymmetric standard model - the addition of
one singlet superfield - can have a profound impact on the Higgs and its
decays. We perform a general operator analysis of this scenario, focusing on
the phenomenologically distinct scenarios that can arise, and not restricting
the scope to the narrow framework of the NMSSM. We reexamine decays to four b
quarks and four tau's, finding that they are still generally viable, but at the
edge of LEP limits. We find a broad set of Higgs decay modes, some new,
including those with four gluon final states, as well as more general six and
eight parton final states. We find the phenomenology of these scenarios is
dramatically impacted by operators typically ignored, specifically those
arising from D-terms in the hidden sector, and those arising from weak-scale
colored fields. In addition to sensitivity of m_Z, there are potential tunings
of other aspects of the spectrum. In spite of this, these models can be very
natural, with light stops and a Higgs as light as 82 GeV. These scenarios
motivate further analyses of LEP data as well as studies of the detection

Taking account of this circumstance, the objective of the current research may be phrased as two separate questions. In the first place, determining the importance which IT related degree students place on these types of competencies for their professional future. In the second place, the importance which the development of the mentioned competencies has been given during their studies. The realization of an empirical study has fulfilled the two objectives described. The results demonstrate, on the one side, the moderate relevance which students assign to interpersonal competencies, especially emotional competencies, in contrast to the international curricular recommendations and studies concerning labor markets. On the other hand, the results indicate the scarce emphasis which lecturers have placed on the development of such competencies.Publicad
Life path analysis: scaling indicates priming effects of social and habitat factors on dispersal distances
1. Movements of many animals along a life-path can be separated into repetitive ones within home ranges and transitions between home ranges. We sought relationships of social and environmental factors with initiation and distance of transition movements in 114 buzzards Buteo buteo that were marked as nestlings with long-life radio tags.
2. Ex-natal dispersal movements of 51 buzzards in autumn were longer than for 30 later in their first year and than 35 extra-natal movements between home ranges after leaving nest areas. In the second and third springs, distances moved from winter focal points by birds that paired were the same or less than for unpaired birds. No post-nuptial movement exceeded 2 km.
3. Initiation of early ex-natal dispersal was enhanced by presence of many sibs, but also by lack of worm-rich loam soils. Distances travelled were greatest for birds from small broods and with relatively little short grass-feeding habitat near the nest. Later movements were generally enhanced by the absence of loam soils and short grassland, especially with abundance of other buzzards and probable poor feeding habitats (heathland, long grass).
4. Buzzards tended to persist in their first autumn where arable land was abundant, but subsequently showed a strong tendency to move from this habitat.
5. Factors that acted most strongly in ½-km buffers round nests, or round subsequent focal points, usually promoted movement compared with factors acting at a larger scale. Strong relationships between movement distances and environmental characteristics in ½-km buffers, especially during early ex-natal dispersal, suggested that buzzards became primed by these factors to travel far.
6. Movements were also farthest for buzzards that had already moved far from their natal nests, perhaps reflecting genetic predisposition, long-term priming or poor habitat beyond the study area
Generic competences for the IT knowledge workers: a study from the field.

Heavy Quark Photoproduction in Ultra-peripheral Heavy Ion Collisions
Heavy quarks are copiously produced in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions.
In the strong electromagnetic fields, c c-bar and b b-bar are produced by
photonuclear and two-photon interactions; hadroproduction can occur in grazing
interactions. We present the total cross sections, quark transverse momentum
and rapidity distributions, as well as the Q Q-bar invariant mass spectra from
the three production channels. We consider AA and pA collisions at the
Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Large Hadron Collider. We discuss
techniques for separating the three processes and describe how the AA to pA
production ratios might be measured accurately enough to study nuclear

Tracing hydrous eclogite melts in the source of sanukitoids
Sanukitoids are unique Archean and early Proterozoic igneous rocks. They contain high amounts of Mg, Ni and Cr, showing they are mantle-derived melts, while they are also enriched in Sr and Ba and have relatively high K contents, requiring the involvement of an incompatible element-enriched component likely derived from recycled crustal material. The appearance of sanukitoids in the geological record coincides with a shift in continental crust composition, and both events have been linked to a change in geodynamic processes on Earth. However, uncertainties remain about sanukitoid petrogenesis, in particular whether their mantle source was metasomatised by a metabasite-derived silicate melt or by an aqueous fluid. Titanium (Ti) stable isotopes can trace magmatic processes where silicate melts are in equilibrium with Fe-Ti oxides and amphibole but are insensitive to fluid-driven processes, making them a suitable tool to investigate not only the formation of sanukitoid magmas but also their subsequent evolution. Here we present Ti isotope data (δ49Ti) for a series of Neoarchean sanukitoids from the Yilgarn Craton that continuously covers the full compositional range of sanukitoids. These are complemented by Mesoarchean sanukitoids and Paleoarchean “sanukitoid-like” rocks from the Pilbara Craton, and by Paleoproterozoic sanukitoids from the São Francisco Craton/Paleocontinent. In addition, we analysed Paleozoic high Ba-Sr granite suites from Scotland, which are proposed to be Phanerozoic sanukitoid analogues.
Evolved sanukitoids, which formed after Fe-Ti oxide saturation, show a more muted δ49Ti increase during differentiation compared to currently analysed modern calc-alkaline suites. This difference is best explained by removal of significant proportions of Ti during sanukitoid differentiation by magmatic hornblende, which fractionates Ti isotopes less strongly than Fe-Ti oxides. Combined with early oxide saturation at high Mg#, this suggests that sanukitoid parental magmas had H2O contents and fO2 at least as high as modern arc magmas. Primitive (pre-oxide saturation) sanukitoids, however, have significantly higher δ49Ti (0.11–0.20‰) than modern arc basalts, the depleted mantle and the bulk silicate Earth (BSE). Their elevated δ49Ti values cannot be explained by aqueous fluids alone in their mantle source, and instead require the involvement of a hydrous eclogite melt component formed in equilibrium with residual rutile. We favour generation of this metasomatic melt by fluid-fluxed eclogite partial melting, demonstrating that both metabasite melts and aqueous fluids are important for sanukitoid formation. The Ti isotope compositions of Archean and Paleoproterozoic sanukitoids therefore favour formation of the sanukitoid mantle source by a subduction-like process at least ∼2.7 Ga
ALICE: The Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph aboard the New Horizons Pluto-Kuiper Belt Mission
The New Horizons ALICE instrument is a lightweight (4.4 kg), low-power (4.4
Watt) imaging spectrograph aboard the New Horizons mission to Pluto/Charon and
the Kuiper Belt. Its primary job is to determine the relative abundances of
various species in Pluto's atmosphere. ALICE will also be used to search for an
atmosphere around Pluto's moon, Charon, as well as the Kuiper Belt Objects
(KBOs) that New Horizons hopes to fly by after Pluto-Charon, and it will make
UV surface reflectivity measurements of all of these bodies as well. The
instrument incorporates an off-axis telescope feeding a Rowland-circle
spectrograph with a 520-1870 angstroms spectral passband, a spectral point
spread function of 3-6 angstroms FWHM, and an instantaneous spatial
field-of-view that is 6 degrees long. Different input apertures that feed the
telescope allow for both airglow and solar occultation observations during the
mission. The focal plane detector is an imaging microchannel plate (MCP) double
delay-line detector with dual solar-blind opaque photocathodes (KBr and CsI)
and a focal surface that matches the instrument's 15-cm diameter
Rowland-circle. In what follows, we describe the instrument in greater detail,
including descriptions of its ground calibration and initial in flight

Results of Prevention of REStenosis with Tranilast and its Outcomes (PRESTO) trial
BACKGROUND: Restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a major problem affecting 15% to 30% of patients after stent placement. No oral agent has shown a beneficial effect on restenosis or on associated major adverse cardiovascular events. In limited trials, the oral agent tranilast has been shown to decrease the frequency of angiographic restenosis after PCI. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of tranilast (300 and 450 mg BID for 1 or 3 months), 11 484 patients were enrolled. Enrollment and drug were initiated within 4 hours after successful PCI of at least 1 vessel. The primary end point was the first occurrence of death, myocardial infarction, or ischemia-driven target vessel revascularization within 9 months and was 15.8% in the placebo group and 15.5% to 16.1% in the tranilast groups (P=0.77 to 0.81). Myocardial infarction was the only component of major adverse cardiovascular events to show some evidence of a reduction with tranilast (450 mg BID for 3 months): 1.1% versus 1.8% with placebo (P=0.061 for intent-to-treat population). The primary reason for not completing treatment was > or =1 hepatic laboratory test abnormality (11.4% versus 0.2% with placebo, P<0.01). In the angiographic substudy composed of 2018 patients, minimal lumen diameter (MLD) was measured by quantitative coronary angiography. At follow-up, MLD was 1.76+/-0.77 mm in the placebo group, which was not different from MLD in the tranilast groups (1.72 to 1.78+/-0.76 to 80 mm, P=0.49 to 0.89). In a subset of these patients (n=1107), intravascular ultrasound was performed at follow-up. Plaque volume was not different between the placebo and tranilast groups (39.3 versus 37.5 to 46.1 mm(3), respectively; P=0.16 to 0.72). CONCLUSIONS: Tranilast does not improve the quantitative measures of restenosis (angiographic and intravascular ultrasound) or its clinical sequelae
Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS
detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4
fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to
Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks
corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new
structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is
also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
