Improved Alere Determine Lipoarabinomannan Antigen Detection Test for the Diagnosis of Human and Bovine Tuberculosis by Manipulating Urine and Milk

Tuberculosis (TB) disease still kills 1-person every 21-seconds. Few TB diagnostic tests are considered truly appropriate for point of care settings. The WHO-endorsed immunodiagnostic Alere Determine Lipoarabinomannan Ag-test (LAM-test) detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex LAM in urine, and its use is recommended for TB diagnosis among HIV co-infected individuals with low CD4 T-cell counts. Here we found that a simple 15-minute enzymatic treatment at room temperature of LAM-spiked urine with \xCE\xB1-mannosidase (for human TB), and LAM-spiked milk with combined lactase and caseinase (for bovine TB), enhanced 10-fold the detection levels of the LAM-test and thus, improved the detection of LAM by the LAM-test in urine and milk that otherwise could be missed in the field. Future separate clinical research studies specifically designed to address the potential of these findings are required

Random Number Generator with Long-Range Dependence and Multifractal Behavior Based on Memristor

    No full text
Random number generators are used in areas such as encryption and system modeling, where some of these exhibit fractal behaviors. For this reason, it is interesting to make use of the memristor characteristics for the random number generation. Accordingly, the objective of this article is to evaluate the performance of a chaotic memristive system as a random number generator with fractal behavior and long-range dependence. To achieve the above, modeling memristor and its corresponding chaotic systems is performed, from which a random number generator is constructed. Subsequently, the Hurst parameter for the detection of long-range dependence is estimated and a fractal analysis of the synthesized data is performed. Finally, a comparison between the model proposed in the research and the β-MWM algorithm is made. The results obtained show that the data synthesized from the proposed generator have a variable Hurst parameter and both monofractal and multifractal behavior. The main contribution of this research is the proposal of a new model for the synthesis of traces with long-range dependence and fractal behavior based on the non-linearity of the memristor

Byrsonima crassifolia L. Kunth a bio-resource with potential: Overview and opportunities

    No full text
Byrsonima crassifolia L. Kunth is a plant native to the Americas that grows in tropical and subtropical areas. Fresh B. crassifolia fruits are a good source of ascorbic acid and carotenoids and contain volatile compounds such as butyric and caproic acids. Although B. crassifolia is commonly exploited from wild natural ecosystems, it exhibits the potential to become a crop plant. When optimal agronomic management systems support propagation by seed, fruits with more homogeneous characteristics can be produced compared to those obtained from wild or backyard plants. B. crassifolia fruits can be found in local markets in Central and South America. The pulp, peel, and other B. crassifolia fruit components can be processed to make traditional and innovative food products, namely candies, cookies, cakes, candied fruits, ice creams, sorbets, jellies, juices, liqueurs, jams, nectars, pickles, and fruit drinks as an alternative to avoid the waste of overripe fruits. Additionally, the woody fraction of the B. crassifolia tree is used as a source of firewood, as shade, and for constructing living fences. These uses also allow the maximum use of biomass by establishing support for cultivation with the circular economy and strengthening food security. Therefore, this review aims to provide insights into the generation and dissemination of knowledge supporting the development of strategies in the areas of agronomy, postharvest management, and technological processing of B. crassifolia to promote its sustainable use and exploitation
