The Software Engineering course, which is a common subject in all 4-Year Bachelor Program of the Faculty of Computer Science, teaches each student, among others, to be able to plan, create, deploy and manage projects, focused on communication skills for software development using applied life cycle and methodologies. Teachers evaluate not only the learning process but also the effort invested in the course, using three deliverables during the academic year. These documents, which must comply with a well-defined requirement, in addition to the software development project, is made during the course by groups of five to eight students. Nowadays, this documentation is made manually. Dietary fatty acids and vitamin B3: an effective treatment strategy for the metabolic syndrome?

    Get PDF
The metabolic syndrome (MS) may be defined as the constellation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors that comprises obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. Recent evidences suggest that, primarily due to its high monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) content, olive oil and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) could be useful as a dietary approach for MS management, with relevance in the postprandial state. Vitamin B3, as a major substrate for nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT), also constitutes a nutritional intervention strategy for the treatment of MS. NAMPT has been shown to exert activities of central importance to cellular energetics and innate immunity. Within the cell, NAMPT is the rate-limiting step in a salvage pathway of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) biosynthesis. NAMPT has been shown to correlate with triglycerides in the fasting plasma, and a potential regulatory role for fatty acids on NAMPT expression has been proposed. Whether different dietary fatty acids, including olive oil as a source of MUFA, play a role in NAMPT excursions and in the NAMPT-dependent regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism and inflammation states remains to be solved. In general, the mechanisms that alter NAD+ metabolism probably include multiple processes, but the understandings of these mechanisms are currently very unclear and a considerable effort in this area is required before we know how changes in NAD+ metabolism influence physiology of glucose and lipid metabolism and how NAD+ metabolism might be manipulated for healing benefit by specific dietary fatty acids as a therapeutic treatment for MS.Peer Reviewe

Membrane composition and dynamics: A target of bioactive virgin olive oil constituents

The endogenous synthesis of lipids, which requires suitable dietary raw materials, is critical for the formation of membrane bilayers. In eukaryotic cells, phospholipids are the predominant membrane lipids and consist of hydrophobic acyl chains attached to a hydrophilic head group. The relative balance between saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated acyl chains is required for the organization and normal function of membranes. Virgin olive oil is the richest natural dietary source of the monounsaturated lipid oleic acid and is one of the key components of the healthy Mediterranean diet. Virgin olive oil also contains a unique constellation of many other lipophilic and amphipathic constituents whose health benefits are still being discovered. The focus of this review is the latest evidence regarding the impact of oleic acid and the minor constituents of virgin olive oil on the arrangement and behavior of lipid bilayers. We highlight the relevance of these interactions to the potential use of virgin olive oil in preserving the functional properties of membranes to maintain health and in modulating membrane functions that can be altered in several pathologies. [ENG] The influence of Adara, Mariana 2624, Mayor, MaxMa 14, Saint Lucie GF 64 (SL 64), Gisela 5, Gisela 6, Pikú 1, Pikú 3 and Pikú 4 rootstocks onto vegetative growth, yield and fruit quality of “Newstar” sweet cherry cultivar was studied. Also, 69 sweet cherry cultivars grafted in Mariana 2624 with Adara, as interstock, was studied. Both trials were performed in Jumilla, on a heavy and calcareous soil. Significant differences in parameters such as vigour, yield, fruit size, soluble solids content (SSC) and fruit firmness were examined among rootstocks. Mariana 2624 with Adara, as interstock, was the rootstock with better agronomic performance. In general, Gisela 5, Gisela 6, SL 64, Mayor and Pikú 1 presented the highest mortality rate, that advice not to use in our conditions. On the other hand, the results of this investigation showed 20 cultivars that are better adapted and could be considered to introduce this crop in this area for their productivity and fruit quality. However, not early cultivars were found in our study.A los componentes del Grupo Cerezo I+D. Oleic acid—the main component of olive oil on postprandial metabolic processes

    Get PDF
2 Tablas.-- 6 FigurasWhile virtually all-clinical studies for the evaluation of health status are conducted in individuals at fasting, the postprandium, that is, “the period that comprises and follows a meal,” remains as an interval of the day characterized by significant but silent metabolic disturbances that, although they are considered physiological, they may cease to be due to high amounts or quality of nutrients, and/or intrinsic factors that influence the metabolic response to such nutrients. In those cases, if repetitive, disproportionate, and long lasting, the postprandial metabolism can become a pathological condition involved in the genesis of multiple disorders, some of which may be potentially life threatening in the long term. After meals rich in fats and carbohydrates the postprandial increased levels of triglycerides and glucose can be accompanied by oxidative stress and, less well known, activation of blood clotting cascade, peripheral insulin resistance, and inflammation. The goal of this chapter is to provide an update of the information on the relevance of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), notably oleic acid, in olive oil regarding saturated fatty acids (SFA) in dietary fats to influence postprandial metabolic processes related to blood coagulation, β-cell function, insulin sensitivity, and inflammation. Data are consistent with the view that the oleic-to-palmitic-acid ratio (MUFA/SFA) in olive oil may have a beneficial impact on postprandial levels of tissue factor and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, with a restraint of postprandial hyperactivity of β-cells, insulin resistance, and proinflammatory response. We suggest that the Mediterranean diet can reduce cardiovascular events and disease in part due to the high oleic acid content in olive oil and its impact on postprandial hemostatic system and glucose and tissue homeostasis. This study was supported by grants from the MCYT and MEC (AGL2001-0584, AGL2004–04958, AGL2011–29008, and AGL2016–80852-R) and by a grant from the Fundación CEAS (Centro de Excelencia en Investigación sobre Aceite de Oliva y Salud). Plan de contingencia para los servicios de medicina intensiva frente a la pandemia COVID-19

    Get PDF
In January 2020, the Chinese authorities identified a new virus of the Coronaviridae family as the cause of several cases of pneumonia of unknown aetiology. The outbreak was initially confined to Wuhan City, but then spread outside Chinese borders. On 31 January 2020, the first case was declared in Spain. On 11 March 2020, The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. On 16 March 2020, there were 139 countries affected. In this situation, the Scientific Societies SEMICYUC and SEEIUC, have decided to draw up this Contingency Plan to guide the response of the Intensive Care Services. The objectives of this plan are to estimate the magnitude of the problem and identify the necessary human and material resources. This is to provide the Spanish Intensive Medicine Services with a tool to programme optimal response strategies

The Mice at play in the CALIFA survey: A case study of a gas-rich major merger between first passage and coalescence

    Get PDF
We present optical integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations of the Mice, a major merger between two massive (>10^11Msol) gas-rich spirals NGC4676A and B, observed between first passage and final coalescence. The spectra provide stellar and gas kinematics, ionised gas properties and stellar population diagnostics, over the full optical extent of both galaxies. The Mice provide a perfect case study highlighting the importance of IFS data for improving our understanding of local galaxies. The impact of first passage on the kinematics of the stars and gas has been significant, with strong bars likely induced in both galaxies. The barred spiral NGC4676B exhibits a strong twist in both its stellar and ionised gas disk. On the other hand, the impact of the merger on the stellar populations has been minimal thus far: star formation induced by the recent close passage has not contributed significantly to the global star formation rate or stellar mass of the galaxies. Both galaxies show bicones of high ionisation gas extending along their minor axes. In NGC4676A the high gas velocity dispersion and Seyfert-like line ratios at large scaleheight indicate a powerful outflow. Fast shocks extend to ~6.6kpc above the disk plane. The measured ram pressure and mass outflow rate (~8-20Msol/yr) are similar to superwinds from local ULIRGs, although NGC4676A has only a moderate infrared luminosity of 3x10^10Lsol. Energy beyond that provided by the mechanical energy of the starburst appears to be required to drive the outflow. We compare the observations to mock kinematic and stellar population maps from a merger simulation. The models show little enhancement in star formation during and following first passage, in agreement with the observations. We highlight areas where IFS data could help further constrain the models.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, accepted to A&A. Contribution of cardio-vascular risk factors to depressive status in the PREDIMED-PLUS Trial. A cross-sectional and a 2-year longitudinal study

    Get PDF
Background Cardio-vascular disease and depression are thought to be closely related, due to shared risk factors. The aim of the study was to determine the association between cardio-vascular risk (CVR) factors and depressive status in a population (55-75 years) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) from the PREDIMED-Plus trial. Methods and findings Participants were classified into three groups of CVR according to the Framingham-based REGICOR function: (1) low (LR), (2) medium (MR) or (3) high/very high (HR). The Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) was used to assess depressive symptoms at baseline and after 2 years. The association between CVR and depressive status at baseline (n = 6545), and their changes after 2 years (n = 4566) were evaluated through multivariable regression models (logistic and linear models). HR women showed higher odds of depressive status than LR [OR (95% CI) = 1.78 (1.26, 2.50)]. MR and HR participants with total cholesterol <160 mg/mL showed higher odds of depression than LR [OR (95% CI) = 1.77 (1.13, 2.77) and 2.83 (1.25, 6.42) respectively)] but those with total cholesterol ¿280 mg/mL showed lower odds of depression than LR [OR (95% CI) = 0.26 (0.07, 0.98) and 0.23 (0.05, 0.95), respectively]. All participants decreased their BDI-II score after 2 years, being the decrease smaller in MR and HR diabetic compared to LR [adjusted mean±SE = -0.52±0.20, -0.41 ±0.27 and -1.25±0.31 respectively). MR and HR participants with total cholesterol between 240-279 mg/mL showed greater decreases in the BDI-II score compared to LR (adjusted mean±SE = -0.83±0.37, -0.77±0.64 and 0.97±0.52 respectively). Conclusions Improving cardiovascular health could prevent the onset of depression in the elderly. Diabetes and total cholesterol in individuals at high CVR, may play a specific role in the precise response. The PREDIMED-Plus trial was supported by the European Research Council through a grant to MAM (Advanced Research Grant 2013-2018; 340918).
