Order \alpha_s^2 Contributions to charm production in charged-current deep-inelastic lepton-hadron scattering

The most important part of the order αs2\alpha_s^2 corrections to the charm component of the charged-current structure functions F2(x,Q2)F_2(x,Q^2) and F3(x,Q2)F_3(x,Q^2) have been calculated. This calculation is based on the asymptotic form of the heavy-quark coefficient functions corresponding to the higher order corrections to the W-boson-gluon fusion process. These coefficient functions which are in principle only valid for Q2≫m2Q^2 \gg m^2 can be also used to estimate the order αs2\alpha_s^2 contributions at lower Q2Q^2 values provided x<0.1x < 0.1. It turns out that the above corrections are appreciable in the large Q2Q^2-region and they explain the discrepancy found for the structure functions between the fixed-flavour scheme (FFS) and the variable-flavour-number scheme (VFNS). These corrections also hamper the extraction of the strange-quark density from the data obtained for the charged-current and the electromagnetic-current processes.Comment: 45 pages LaTeX, 17 Postscript Figure

An easy way to solve two-loop vertex integrals

Negative dimensional integration is a step further dimensional regularization ideas. In this approach, based on the principle of analytic continuation, Feynman integrals are polynomial ones and for this reason very simple to handle, contrary to the usual parametric ones. The result of the integral worked out in D<0D<0 must be analytically continued again --- of course --- to real physical world, D>0D>0, and this step presents no difficulties. We consider four two-loop three-point vertex diagrams with arbitrary exponents of propagators and dimension. These original results give the correct well-known particular cases where the exponents of propagators are equal to unity.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures, misprints correcte

Higher order QCD corrections to the transverse and longitudinal fragmentation functions in electron-positron annihilation

    Get PDF
We present the calculation of the order αs2\alpha_s^2 corrections to the coefficient functions contributing to the longitudinal (FL(x,Q2)F_L(x,Q^2)) and transverse fragmentation functions (FT(x,Q2)F_T(x,Q^2)) measured in electron-positron annihilation. The effect of these higher order QCD corrections on the behaviour of the fragmentation functions and the corresponding longitudinal (dσL(x,Q2)/dxd\sigma_L(x,Q^2)/dx) and transverse cross sections (dσT(x,Q2)/dxd\sigma_T(x,Q^2)/dx) are studied. In particular we investigate the dependence of the above quantities on the mass factorization scale (MM) and the various parameterizations chosen for the parton fragmentation densities DpH(x,M2)D_p^H(x,M^2) (p=q,gp=q,g; H=π±,K±,P,PˉH=\pi^\pm, K^\pm, P, \bar{P}). Our analysis reveals that the order \alpha_s^2 contributions to FL(x,Q2)F_L(x,Q^2) are large whereas these contributions to FT(x,Q2)F_T(x,Q^2) are small. From the above fragmentation functions one can also compute the integrated cross sections σL\sigma_L and σT\sigma_T in an independent way. The sum σtot=σL+σT\sigma_{tot} = \sigma_L + \sigma_T, corrected up to order \alphastwo, agrees with the well known result in the literature providing us with an independent check an our calculations.Comment: 69 pages, latex2e, uses mcite, amsfonts. Spectrum of the Vortex Bound States of the Dirac and Schrodinger Hamiltonian in the presence of Superconducting Gaps

We investigate the vortex bound states both Schrodinger and Dirac Hamiltonian with the s-wave superconducting pairing gap by solving the mean-field Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations. The exact vortex bound states spectrum is numerically determined by the integration method, and also accompanied by the quasi-classical analysis. It is found that the bound state energies is proportional to the vortex angular momentum when the chemical potential is large enough. By applying the external magnetic field, the vortex bound state energies of the Dirac Hamiltonian are almost unchanged; whereas the energy shift of the Schrodinger Hamiltonian is proportional to the magnetic field. These qualitative differences may serve as an indirect evidence of the existence of Majorana fermions in which the zero mode exists in the case of the Dirac Hamiltonian only.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

Ultrasound markers for prediction of complex gastroschisis and adverse outcome:longitudinal prospective nationwide cohort study

Contains fulltext : 220734.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)OBJECTIVES: To identify antenatal ultrasound markers that can differentiate between simple and complex gastroschisis and assess their predictive value. METHODS: This was a prospective nationwide study of pregnancies with isolated fetal gastroschisis that underwent serial longitudinal ultrasound examination at regular specified intervals between 20 and 37 weeks' gestation. The primary outcome was simple or complex (i.e. involving bowel atresia, volvulus, perforation or necrosis) gastroschisis at birth. Fetal biometry (abdominal circumference and estimated fetal weight), the occurrence of polyhydramnios, intra- and extra-abdominal bowel diameters and the pulsatility index (PI) of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) were assessed. Linear mixed modeling was used to compare the individual trajectories of cases with simple and those with complex gastroschisis, and logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the strength of association between the ultrasound parameters and outcome. RESULTS: Of 104 pregnancies with isolated fetal gastroschisis included, four ended in intrauterine death. Eighty-one (81%) liveborn infants with simple and 19 (19%) with complex gastroschisis were included in the analysis. We found no relationship between fetal biometric variables and complex gastroschisis. The SMA-PI was significantly lower in fetuses with gastroschisis than in healthy controls, but did not differentiate between simple and complex gastroschisis. Both intra- and extra-abdominal bowel diameters were larger in cases with complex, compared to those with simple, gastroschisis (P /= 97.7(th) percentile on at least three occasions, not necessarily on successive examinations, was associated with an increased risk of the fetus having complex gastroschisis (relative risk, 1.56 (95% CI, 1.02-2.10); P = 0.006; positive predictive value, 50.0%; negative predictive value, 81.4%). CONCLUSIONS: This large prospective longitudinal study found that intra-abdominal bowel dilatation when present repeatedly during fetal development can differentiate between simple and complex gastroschisis; however, the positive predictive value is low, and therefore the clinical usefulness of this marker is limited. Next-to-Leading Order Cross Sections for Tagged Reactions

    Get PDF
We extend the phase space slicing method of Giele, Glover and Kosower for performing next-to-leading order jet cross section calculations in two important ways: we show how to include fragmentation functions and how to include massive particles. These extensions allow the application of this method to not just jet cross sections but also to cross sections in which a particular final state particle, including a DD or BB-meson, is tagged.Comment: 36 pages, Latex Small corrections to text. QCD Corrections to Four-jet Production and Three-jet Structure in e+ e- annihilation

    Get PDF
We report on the general purpose numerical program MERCUTIO, which can be used to calculate any infrared safe four-jet quantity in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-leading order. The program is based on the dipole formalism and uses a remapping of phase-space in order to improve the efficiency of the Monte Carlo integration. Numerical results are given for the four-jet fraction and the D-parameter. These results are compared with already existing ones in the literature and serve as a cross-check. The program can also be used to investigate the internal structure of three-jet events at NLO. We give results for previously uncalculated observables: the jet broadening variable and the softest-jet explanarity.Comment: 28 pages, Latex, final versio

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    Get PDF
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes. This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table, corrected author list, matches final version in Physical Review Letter

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    Get PDF
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Physics Letters

Reducing heterotic M-theory to five dimensional supergravity on a manifold with boundary

    Get PDF
This paper constructs the reduction of heterotic MM-theory in eleven dimensions to a supergravity model on a manifold with boundary in five dimensions using a Calabi-Yau three-fold. New results are presented for the boundary terms in the action and for the boundary conditions on the bulk fields. Some general features of dualisation on a manifold with boundary are used to explain the origin of some topological terms in the action. The effect of gaugino condensation on the fermion boundary conditions leads to a `twist' in the chirality of the gravitino which can provide an uplifting mechanism in the vacuum energy to cancel the cosmological constant after moduli stabilisation.Comment: 16 pages, RevTe
