    RECENT MARKET REQUIREMENTS FOR PORK QUALITY IN GERMANY

    Meat market is changing continuously. The amount of meat sold in butcher shops is decreasing while pre packed meat in grocery stores and discounters is growing up to more than 50 % of the total consumption in 2007 (forecast). This has an impact on carcass evaluation concerning weight, proportion of cuts and homogeneity. New evaluation systems were developed and applied. Consumer’s demand to meat quality is, besides the well known characteristics for contents of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, minimal residues, tenderness, water holding capacity etc., i.e. where objective measurements can be applied, also ethic considerations. These are sustainable production systems, animal welfare and enjoyment of meat consumption. The first group of traits mentioned has been improved substantially by selection against the MHS gene. But heterozygous products are still on the market and even in homozygous MHS negative populations a wide variation in meat quality remains. To gain further genetic progress additional characteristics of pork quality were introduced into progeny testing schemes, and, occasionally, in the slaughter line, i.e. drip loss and intramuscular fat. Due to heritability parameters and genetic correlations these efforts are promising.     The analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is an important tool for the diagnosis of neurological diseases. However, there is limited knowledge about the representativity of a single oligoclonal band (OCB) analysis for a neurological disease during its clinical course. In this study, we analyzed the presence of OCB in the CSF of patients who underwent lumbar puncture more than once. We retrospectively analyzed anonymized data from serial 17,002 CSF analyses done in the CSF laboratory of the Department of Neurology, University Hospital Zurich. We included cases with documented diagnosis in whom OCB were determined more than once. We included 144 patients. The median time span between the first and second OCB analysis was 274days (range, 1-3,533days). The result of the second OCB analysis was identical in 109 cases, and different in 35 (24%). Twenty-five patients acquired and ten patients lost OCB over time. Three of 24 MS patients did not show OCB at the first CSF analysis, but in the second. In the entire group, newly occurring OCB were often associated with new symptoms or occurred after the acute phase of CNS infectious diseases, supposedly as a consequence of the immune reaction. A loss of OCB was often associated with remissions from diseases, e.g., during effective treatment. In patients with neurological diseases, both initially positive and negative OCB results may change over time, which often parallels the clinical condition. Such variability must be taken into account for the interpretation of OCB results

    Sodium oxybate in narcolepsy with cataplexy: Zurich sleep center experience

    Sodium oxybate (SO; Xyrem®) has been approved in most countries for treatment of narcolepsy and cataplexy. In this study, we present a single-center experience of a series of 18 patients with narcolepsy with cataplexy (18/18 DQB1*0602 positive, 17/17 with low/absent cerebrospinal fluid hypocretin) in whom SO was prescribed. After 26 ± 13 months, 13/18 patients were still on SO at a mean dosage of 6.1 ± 1.2 g (in 8 of them in combination with stimulants). The following significant effects were observed: improved subjective sleepiness (12/13), cataplexy (13/13; median number of attacks from 20 to 1/month), hallucinations (8/10) and sleep paralysis (8/8); increase in mean sleep latency on the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (from 5.5 to 17.4 min) and sleep/rest efficiency on actigraphy (from 61 to 76%); decrease in Epworth Sleepiness Scale score (from 18 to 14), sleep onset REM periods on the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (from 3.6 to 2.4) and errors in the Steer-Clear Test (from 11 to 2%). Five patients discontinued SO because of insufficient compliance (n = 2), lack of efficiency (n = 1) and side effects (n = 1). These data confirm and expand previous reports on the good effects and tolerability of SO as a treatment for narcolepsy with cataplexy

    Sustained efficacy of natalizumab in the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis independent of disease activity and disability at baseline: real-life data from a Swiss cohort

    OBJECTIVES: Therapy for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis with natalizumab (Tysabri; Biogen Idec) has been shown to be effective in the reduction of the clinical relapse rate and disability progression. However, real-life longitudinal data, including years before baseline, are rare. METHODS: An observational single-center study was carried out. We analyzed data from 64 consecutive patients with multiple sclerosis. RESULTS: After 1 year of treatment (n = 64), score on the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) decreased by 0.47 points (P = 0.047) and the annualized relapse rate (ARR) decreased by 82% (P 2) or EDSS score and was not biased by exceptional high disease activity or relapses around baseline. CONCLUSIONS: These real-life data reinforce that natalizumab is effective over years, reduces ARR, and stabilizes EDSS score independent of baseline ARR, baseline EDSS score, or baseline treatment

    NLO QCD+EW predictions for V + jets including off-shell vector-boson decays and multijet merging

    We present next-to-leading order (NLO) predictions including QCD and electroweak (EW) corrections for the production and decay of off-shell electroweak vector bosons in association with up to two jets at the 13 TeV LHC. All possible dilepton final states with zero, one or two charged leptons that can arise from off-shell W and Z bosons or photons are considered. All predictions are obtained using the automated implementation of NLO QCD+EW corrections in the OpenLoops matrix-element generator combined with the Munich and Sherpa Monte Carlo frameworks. Electroweak corrections play an especially important role in the context of BSM searches, due to the presence of large EW Sudakov logarithms at the TeV scale. In this kinematic regime, important observables such as the jet transverse momentum or the total transverse energy are strongly sensitive to multijet emissions. As a result, fixed-order NLO QCD+EW predictions are plagued by huge QCD corrections and poor theoretical precision. To remedy this problem we present an approximate method that allows for a simple and reliable implementation of NLO EW corrections in the MePs@Nlo multijet merging framework. Using this general approach we present an inclusive simulation of vector-boson production in association with jets that guarantees NLO QCD+EW accuracy in all phase-space regions involving up to two resolved jets
