Arroz: Implicancia del peso específico de granos en la calidad de semillas
El tamaño y peso específico (PE) de semillas incide en su calidad y, en arroz, sus variaciones explican diferencias. Con el objeto de relacionar variables morfométricas con parámetros de calidad fi siológica, se evaluó largo, ancho, peso de 1000 semillas, poder y energía germinativa, stand y vigor de plantas en 4 cultivares de arroz fraccionados por PE. La distribución porcentual de las categorías de PE difiere entre cultivares. Las semillas oscilaron entre 9,30-10,50 mm de largo y 2,41-2,75 mm de ancho encontrándose efectos significativos del cultivar y el PE. En el peso de 1000 semillas, PAC 103 sobresalió por su mayor masa y se evidenció un gradiente según la categoría de PE. El poder germinativo, porcentaje de plantas normales, anormales y semillas no germinadas, energía germinativa y stand de plantas fueron afectados por el PE. La fracción de semillas con PE<1.14 g/cm3 presentó un peor desempeño en dichos parámetros.Size and specifi c gravity (SG) of seeds affects their quality and, in rice, these variations explain differences. In order to relate morphometric variables with physiological quality parameters, length, width, weight of 1000 seeds, germinating power and energy, plant stand and vigor were evaluated in 4 rice cultivars fractionated by SG. The percentage distribution of SG categories differs between cultivars. The seeds ranged between 9.30-10.50 mm in length and 2.41-2.75 mm in width, with significant effects of cultivar and SG. In 1000 seeds weight, PAC 103 stood out for its greater mass and a gradient was evidenced according to the SG category. Germinating power, percentage of normal and abnormal plants and ungerminated seeds, germination energy and plant stand were affected by SG. Prox-regularity of rank constraint sets and implications for algorithms
We present an analysis of sets of matrices with rank less than or equal to a
specified number . We provide a simple formula for the normal cone to such
sets, and use this to show that these sets are prox-regular at all points with
rank exactly equal to . The normal cone formula appears to be new. This
allows for easy application of prior results guaranteeing local linear
convergence of the fundamental alternating projection algorithm between sets,
one of which is a rank constraint set. We apply this to show local linear
convergence of another fundamental algorithm, approximate steepest descent. Our
results apply not only to linear systems with rank constraints, as has been
treated extensively in the literature, but also nonconvex systems with rank

Technologies, Policies, and Measures for Mitigating Climate Change
This Technical Paper provides an overview and analysis of technologies and measures to limit and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to enhance GHG sinks under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC). The paper focuses on technologies and measures for the countries listed in Annex I of the FCCC, while noting information as appropriate for use by non- Annex I countries. Technologies and measures are examined over three time periods -- with a focus on the short term (present to 2010) and the medium term (2010-2020), but also including discussion of longer-term (e.g., 2050) possibilities and opportunities. For this analysis, the authors draw on materials used to prepare the IPCC Second Assessment Report (SAR) and previous IPCC assessments and reports. The Technical Paper includes discussions of technologies and measures that can be adopted in three energy end-use sectors (commercial/residential/institutional buildings, transportation, and industry), as well as in the energy supply sector and the agriculture, forestry, and waste management sectors. Broader measures affecting national economies are discussed in a final section on economic instruments. A range of potential measures are analyzed, including market-based programs; voluntary agreements; regulatory measures; research, development, and demonstration (RD&D); taxes on GHG emissions; and emissions permits/quotas. It should be noted that the choice of instruments could have economic impacts on other countries. The paper identifies and evaluates different options on the basis of three criteria. Because of the difficulty of estimating the economic and market potential (see Box 1) of different technologies and the effectiveness of different measures in achieving emission reduction objectives, and because of the danger of double-counting the results achieved by measures that tap the same technical potentials, the paper does not estimate total global emissions reductions. Decreased antigen-specific T-cell proliferation by moDC among hepatitis B vaccine non-responders on haemodialysis
Patients with end-stage kidney disease, whether or not on renal replacement therapy, have an impaired immune system. This is clinically manifested by a large percentage of patients unresponsive to the standard vaccination procedure for hepatitis B virus (HBV). In this study, the immune response to HBV vaccination is related to the in vitro function of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDC). We demonstrate that mature moDC from nonresponders to HBV vaccination have a less mature phenotype, compared to responders and healthy volunteers, although this did not affect their allostimulatory capacity. However, proliferation of autologous T cells in the presence of tetanus toxoid and candida antigen was decreased in non-responders. Also, HLA-matched CD4+ hsp65-specific human T-cell clones showed markedly decreased proliferation in the group of non-responders. Our results indicate that impairment of moDC to stimulate antigen-specific T cells provides an explanation for the clinical immunodeficiency of patients with end-stage kidney disease
Measurement of the partial widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks
Using the entire OPAL LEP1 on-peak Z hadronic decay sample, Z -> qbarq gamma
decays were selected by tagging hadronic final states with isolated photon
candidates in the electromagnetic calorimeter. Combining the measured rates of
Z -> qbarq gamma decays with the total rate of hadronic Z decays permits the
simultaneous determination of the widths of the Z into up- and down-type
quarks. The values obtained, with total errors, were Gamma u = 300 ^{+19}_{-18}
MeV and Gamma d = 381 ^{+12}_{-12} MeV. The results are in good agreement with

Search for R-Parity Violating Decays of Scalar Fermions at LEP
A search for pair-produced scalar fermions under the assumption that R-parity
is not conserved has been performed using data collected with the OPAL detector
at LEP. The data samples analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of
about 610 pb-1 collected at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) 189-209 GeV. An
important consequence of R-parity violation is that the lightest supersymmetric
particle is expected to be unstable. Searches of R-parity violating decays of
charged sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks have been performed under the
assumptions that the lightest supersymmetric particle decays promptly and that
only one of the R-parity violating couplings is dominant for each of the decay
modes considered. Such processes would yield final states consisting of
leptons, jets, or both with or without missing energy. No significant
single-like excess of events has been observed with respect to the Standard
Model expectations. Limits on the production cross- section of scalar fermions
in R-parity violating scenarios are obtained. Constraints on the supersymmetric
particle masses are also presented in an R-parity violating framework analogous
to the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.Comment: 51 pages, 24 figures, Submitted to Eur. Phys. J.
Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS
detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4
fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to
Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks
corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new
structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is
also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino

Reducing heterotic M-theory to five dimensional supergravity on a manifold with boundary
This paper constructs the reduction of heterotic -theory in eleven
dimensions to a supergravity model on a manifold with boundary in five
dimensions using a Calabi-Yau three-fold. New results are presented for the
boundary terms in the action and for the boundary conditions on the bulk
fields. Some general features of dualisation on a manifold with boundary are
used to explain the origin of some topological terms in the action. The effect
of gaugino condensation on the fermion boundary conditions leads to a `twist'
in the chirality of the gravitino which can provide an uplifting mechanism in
the vacuum energy to cancel the cosmological constant after moduli
